Ash's Torkoal (Japanese: サトシのコータス Satoshi's Cotoise) was the fourth Pokémon caught by Ash during his travels through Hoenn.

History

Ash caught Torkoal in the episode All Torkoal, No Play!. Ash and his friends were traveling through the Valley of Steel when they saw a lone Torkoal being attacked by a Skarmory and many Magneton. After Ash saved it, Torkoal burst into tears and then ran away after hearing the sound of a Steelix. Later, Ash helped it defeat the Steelix that ruled over the valley and Torkoal decided to join him.

Torkoal is very emotional. It bursts into tears for even the smallest of reasons. Torkoal gets along with everyone. It has only been used in one Gym battle, against Norman and his Slakoth. However, it has had many battles against other trainers and has been quite successful, such as when it defeated a Scizor in Vanity Affair. Torkoal also seemed to have a friendship with the Spoink that appeared to Ash's group on a few occasions and also giving it assistance.

Ash also used Torkoal in the Ever Grande Conference.

Afterward, Ash left Torkoal at Professor Oak's lab, as he wanted to challenge the Battle Frontier. It reappeared for Ash's second battle against Brandon's Registeel, where Ash swapped his Aipom for Torkoal. With the newly learned move Heat Wave, Torkoal was able to put up a fight against Registeel but eventually it lost. After the battle, Ash sent Torkoal back to Professor Oak's lab.

It reppeared in An Old Family Blend!, alongside Ash's other Pokémon. It helped thaw out Ash after Glalie used Ice Beam on him out of affection with Flamethrower. In DP189, Ash used it in the battle against Tobias in the semi-finals of the Lily of the Valley Conference. It used Flamethrower, which collided with Tobias's Darkrai's Dark Pulse; however, the attack was not strong enough and Torkoal was defeated in a matter of seconds.
