Jamboree was the last main expansion of cards from Wizards of the Coast, and was intended to be the first “Wizards’ designed” set. However, it was never released.

Jamboree's release was prevented by Nintendo following business disputes between Nintendo and Wizards over the Pokémon TCG license.

Background Information

  • This set may have been the 16th English Expansion.
  • This was to be first set of cards developed by Wizards of the Coast, instead of Media Factory. There was to be a mix of Owner's Pokémon, Dark Pokémon and Expansion Series ("Vending Promos").
  • Development staff wanted to make new Trainer cards to fix perceived balance issues.
  • Development staff also wanted to put previously rejected Pokémon card ideas from Wizards into Jamboree.
  • Development staff also wanted to bring over ideas from Magic the Gathering.
  • Development staff wanted to make goofy cards without essentially meaningless effects, such as "Flip a coin as many times as you want."
  • The art for Jamboree would have included original art by Western artists to compliment Wizards’ original cards. Nick15, well known artist from the Create a Card forums, was approached for art.
  • Many promotional cards that hadn't yet been released outside of Japan were to be included, to catch up Western audiences.

Set list

  • The full set list is still unknown. Estimates have around 60 new Pokémon cards with around 12 new Trainer cards.

  • At least 2 theme decks were finished before cancellation. However, their themes and contents are not currently known.

Release date

  • Fall 2003

The set was meant to be released after Skyridge and Legendary Collection 2, but was prevented from being released by Nintendo. Since Wizards of the Coast commented that final kits before license expiration would be released in August, it's likely that Jamboree's intended release date was August 2003.

Legacy

  • Although cancelled, the contents of Jamboree were secretly released later in different sets. Former Wizards of the Coast playtesters alleged that Nintendo took the contents of Jamboree and secretly released them in EX Sandstorm, and possibly other sets.

Trivia

  • Jamboree was the beta name for the set. However, since the set was never released, a final name was never stated.
  • The set was first introduced to the pubic as the Unnamed Wizards Set, which was Jamboree's alpha name.
  • Bill's Advice is named after two different Bills. The first is Bill (Masaki), and the second Bill was a customer service representative at Wizards of the Coast, who gave advice to playtesters.[2]
  • The basis of Jamboree is exactly what its name implied; a fun mix of Pokémon cards. Taking cues from other previously unreleased sets such as Crosstrainer, Jamboree was going to have a number of cards Wizards created on their own and other cards never previously released in English from sets like the Vending Machine cards and other promos. Ultimately, Jamboree might have actually brought American and European players up to date with Japanese players, as many Japanese cards have yet to be released in English.
  • *For the longest time, Nintendo had been fervently against Wizards of the Coast making their own cards for the Pokémon TCG. The only exception was Dark Raichu from Team Rocket. Eventually, however, Nintendo agreed to consider an entire set made by Wizards, and this was made public during the January 3rd, 2002 session of the Wizards Pokémon TCG Chat:
(Quoted from the January 3rd 2002 Wizards Pokémon TCG Chat)
wotc_keith presents the speaker with question #329 from nickfifteen:
Is there anything you can say about a possible Wizards-first/only Pokémon TCG set?
wotc_keith says, "This is something that we have been thinking about for quite some time. We are currently working with TPC to work out the feasibility and details of this. However, it's definitely something that we would like to see. In fact, it's also something that the Pokémon Company would like to see as well."
