Effect

The Lift Key allows the player to operate the elevator in Team Rocket's Hideout, allowing them to access the section of the bottom floor where Giovanni's office is.

Trivia

The Lift Key glitch

• The Lift Key is involved in a minor glitch in Generation I. If the player is standing to the left of the Team Rocket Grunt who has the Lift Key and talks to him, the Lift Key will appear underneath the player when he drops it. The player can still move around and collect it if he moves downward. This glitch was fixed in Pokémon Yellow, due to the Grunt automatically dropping the Lift Key as soon as he is defeated.
