| For ten long years, Pokémon researchers struggled to create a super-clone to be the world's single most powerful Pokémon. With the birth of Mewtwo, that dream is now a reality. The Pokémon research team used the DNA of Mew, the world's rarest Pokémon, to genetically create Mewtwo. They used the most advanced techniques to develop Mewtwo's awesome psychic abilities. Mewtwo, unfortunately, sees this as less than ideal.

| Team Rocket scientists busily congratulate themselves on a job well done, as they continue to monitor the Pokémon clone's brain waves and vital signs. "What am I?" Mewtwo asks itself as it awakens. "Am I just an experiment–their laboratory specimen? But if I am only a copy of Mew, does that mean that I am nothing but Mew's shadow?" The answer will soon become apparent.

| The prospect of not knowing its own soul, and living its life confined in a research lab, does not sit well with the bio-engineered Mewtwo. "Behold my powers! I am the strongest Pokémon in the world," proclaims Mewtwo as it begins a horrific psychic attack on the lab. The Pokémon's amazing powers are beyond comprehension, and within moments, the compound and the entire Island is reduced to a flaming mound of smoldering rubble.

A packet of cards featuring Mewtwo
The blue logo 1st print run versus the black logo 2nd print run
A comparison between a Rainbow foil, Silver foil card and non-foil card
A comparison between two print variants; the right is a sandpaper silver foil, while the left is a smooth silver foil

Pokémon the First Movie Trading Cards was a set of Pokémon cards manufactured by Topps in 1999. There were 72 cards in total: 41 cards featuring scenes from Mewtwo Strikes Back, 18 cards featuring scenes from Pikachu's Vacation, 12 evolution cards, and a checklist. Each of these 72 cards also had two foil card versions (silver and rainbow). In addition, there were 30 bonus "chase cards" not included on the checklist, including 12 die-cut embossed evolution cards and 18 sticker cards.

Cards were sold in randomly distributed packets of eight or five cards. In the first printing, the cards featured a blue Topps logo, while in the second printing, the logo was black. One card in each packet would be a randomly chosen foil card. Foil cards from the second printing had a sandpaper finish[1]. Silver foil cards with a smooth finish but a black logo were also produced.

A promotional silver foil card numbered 0 also exists that was only distributed at Blockbuster Video stores in 1999 with the rental of the movie Mewtwo Strikes Back.[2][3] The card features a blue Topps logo.

Topps' 75th Anniversary card set from 2013 featured stamped buyback cards, confirmed to include some cards from Series 1, Series 3 & Pokémon First Movie. These are cards that Topps bought from the secondhand market via the buyback program and stamped with a gold "Topps 75th" logo. Some of the cards that were from The First Movie in the 75th Anniversary set include: #09 Ash and Company, #10 Battle Before Lunch, #18 The Temple of Mewtwo, #20 The Best of Luck, #33 Psychic Showdown, #43 Don't Cry Togepi, #48 Racing Cheek to Cheek, E1 Bulbasaur, & Checklist (non-foil) #02 Awakening, #55 Success, E9 Blastoise (sandpaper silver foil)

Mewtwo Strikes Back cards

Set # Front Title Back Back text
00 The first movie 00.png Ready for battle (Promo; very little known copies) The first movie 00 backside.png Pikachu, Ash, Misty and the rest of the 'original' Pokémon stand ready to do battle against the evil Pokémon Mewtwo and his scientifically created Pokémon clones.
0 Topps M01 00.png Super Psychic Pokémon (Promo; not distributed in booster packs) The first movie 0.jpg Mewtwo is the single most powerful Pokémon in the world. It was genetically created by Team Rocket scientists and believes that it will one day control the world. Ash and Pikachu foil the Super-Pokémon's plans, and Mewtwo's reign of evil comes to a peaceful end.
1 Topps M01 01.png Legends The first movie 1.jpg The world as we know it is full of strange mysteries, but none more fantastic than the elusive secret of life. Since the beginning of time, humans and Pokémon alike have searched for its meaning. Many bizarre and wondrous legends have evolved from this search, and none is stranger than this tale that begins with the birth of the most powerful Pokémon of all–Mewtwo!
2 Topps M01 02.png Awakenings The first movie 2.jpg For ten long years, Pokémon researchers struggled to create a super-clone to be the world's single most powerful Pokémon.
3 Topps M01 03.png Consciousness and Congratulations The first movie 3.jpg Team Rocket scientists busily congratulate themselves on a job well done, as they continue to monitor the Pokémon clone's brain waves and vital signs. "What am I?" Mewtwo asks itself as it awakens. "Am I just an experiment–their laboratory specimen? But if I am only a copy of Mew, does that mean that I am nothing but Mew's shadow?" The answer will soon become apparent.
4 Topps M01 04.png Leaving the Nest The first movie 4.jpg The prospect of not knowing its own soul, and living its life confined in a research lab, does not sit well with the bio-engineered Mewtwo.
5 Topps M01 05.png The Proposition The first movie 5.jpg "Those fools thought you were a scientific experiment, but I–I see you as a valuable partner," says the elusive leader of the notorious Team Rocket. The Boss proposes that Mewtwo join forces with him and together they can rule the world. He explains that Mewtwo's powers are far too unpredictable, and Team Rocket can teach it to control and focus those powers. Then Mewtwo would be invincible.
6 Topps M01 06.png Mechanical Mewtwo The first movie 6.jpg In the hidden mountain base of Team Rocket, Mewtwo is outfitted with a fantastic suit of psychic armor. Not only will this incredible armor protect its body, but it will also help to focus Mewtwo's potent psychic energy. The next few weeks will be a torrent of training exercises to help Mewtwo achieve its full potential and finally recognize its purpose, says The Boss. But are those goals its own or Team Rocket's?
7 Topps M01 07.png Trying Out the New Toy The first movie 7.jpg With the aid of its incredible new armor, Mewtwo begins its rigorous training. Team Rocket uses every means to challenge, beat and crush the unstoppable Mewtwo, but every effort winds up a victory for the super-powered Pokémon. Mewtwo may be in complete control of its truly remarkable powers, but its destiny and purpose...that is another story.
8 Topps M01 08.png Rebellion The first movie 8.jpg After weeks of training, Mewtwo is finally aware of its true power, and The Boss reveals Mewtwo's ultimate purpose–to serve and fight for Team Rocket. "This cannot be my destiny, I was not born a Pokémon," cries the clone. "I was created. My creators have used and betrayed me–so I stand alone!" Mewtwo returns to New Island after the destruction of Team Rocket's hidden base, and the reign of Mewtwo begins!
9 Topps M01 09.png Ash and Company The first movie 9.jpg Far away, Ash, Brock and Misty are taking a short break from their Pokémon adventures. As always, Ash is determined to become a Pokémon Master–ready to endure any hardship, bear any burden, with strength and a will of steel. But lunch comes first! Misty scolds Ash for being lazy, but Ash counters that he hasn't eaten since breakfast!
10 Topps M01 10.png Battle Before Lunch The first movie 10.jpg Although Ash may be too tired to help fix lunch, he is not too tired to accept a Pokémon battle challenge! A wandering Pokémon trainer comes looking for a trainer named Ash from Pallet Town. He soon finds Ash ready and willing to leap into battle. Misty and Brock joke that at a Pokémon battle there is some progress...at least his mouth is working.
11 Topps M01 11.png Donphan The first movie 11.jpg Donphan's leathery carapace is as hard as rocks, and is used to protect it from outside attacks. It uses spinning and rolling attacks to overpower its prey. The wandering trainer chooses elephant-like Donphan to do battle and Ash sets Bulbasaur loose to counter. The battle goes poorly for Ash until Bulbasaur charges up his Solar Beam in mid-air and blasts Donphan into defeat.
12 Topps M01 12.png The Nefarious Team Rocket The first movie 12.jpg Little do our heroes know that while Ash is having his Pokémon battle and Misty and Brock are preparing their scrumptious lunch, The Boss has once more sent the bungling terrible trio that is Team Rocket—Jesse, James and Meowth—out to steal rare Pokémon and spy on them. But all that they can think of is the rumbling in their stomachs! James states it best when he says, "I'd settle for a bit of that Pika-chow!"
13 Topps M01 13.png The Invitation The first movie 13.jpg Meanwhile, Mewtwo sends Dragonite to deliver an "invitation" to our heroes–an electronic message that springs to life with Ash's touch. A beautiful woman speaks: "You have been chosen to join a select group of Pokémon trainers to attend a special gathering. It will be hosted by my master, the world's greatest Pokémon trainer, at his Palace on New Island." Ash replies with a great, big "YES."
14 Topps M01 14.png Marina in Chaos The first movie 14.jpg The special invitation that Ash receives specifies that a ferry will leave from Old Shore Wharf Marina to take all of the trainers to New Island. As Ash and company arrive at the Marina, they find it in an uproar. Because of a horrible storm that has struck, the ferry has been canceled, and there is no way across the tumultuous waters!
15 Topps M01 15.png The Tempest–A Bad Omen The first movie 15.jpg The harbormaster Miranda tells a legend of a terrible storm–the Winds of Water–that will wipe out all but a few Pokémon. In their sorrow, the waters of their tears will restore the lives of those lost in the storm. When some trainers insist on going, Officer Jenny gives them one more piece of bad news–Nurse Joy has been missing for close to a month, and the Pokémon Center has been shut down!
16 Topps M01 16.png A Call to Arms The first movie 16.jpg Since there are no Pokémon tears this day, and only rough seas, the trainers and their Pokémon decide to seek out their destinies, and leap into the heart of the torrent to face the unknown challenges ahead. Ash and friends watch as the other trainers leave, but they have no means to get there themselves. As if reading their minds, a mysterious Viking ship appears out of the darkness to ferry our heroes across the water.
17 Topps M01 17.png Underwater Adventure The first movie 17.jpg As the little boat rocks and bobs across the harbor, a giant wave crashes down and destroys the vessel revealing the Vikings to be none other than Team Rocket! Our heroes and the nasty Team Rocket are thrown from the tiny ship into the churning waters. With monstrous waves crashing about them, Misty and Ash call out Staryu and Squirtle, and our heroes streak through the water to New Island and all that awaits them...
18 Topps M01 18.png The Temple of Mewtwo The first movie 18.jpg After the heart-stopping adventure through the waves, our heroes finally arrive within the eye of the storm. As they look about them, they see the Temple of Mewtwo on the recently rebuilt New Island. The spiraling towers and majestic windmills loom above them as they float into an underground dock, where Mewtwo's human servant meets them.
19 Topps M01 19.png The Stairwell The first movie 19.jpg Ash presents his invitation to Mewtwo's servant and she beckons our heroes forth. As they walk through the bowels of Mewtwo's elaborate temple Ash, Misty and Brock are led up a monolithic spiraling staircase. When our intrepid heroes reach the top of the stairwell, they are led to a set of larger-than-life doors. The monstrous doors creak open revealing...
20 Topps M01 20.png The Best of the Best The first movie 20.jpg As the giant doors swing open, Ash and friends are welcomed into a lush and well-appointed hall inhabited by three other Pokémon trainers and their Pokémon. It turns out that the storm was but a test–only the trainers that were capable of braving the storm could prove themselves worthy in the eyes of the "Master."
21 Topps M01 21.png Introductions The first movie 21.jpg Ash and his new friends, Corey, Fergus and Neesha prepare to meet the greatest Pokémon Master on Earth. As Mewtwo descends from a giant shaft of electric-blue light, all of the heroes gasp in astonishment—is the greatest Pokémon Master also the most powerful Pokémon in the world? As their disbelief grows, Mewtwo proves his powers by speaking to them psychically, and hurling a rebellious Fergus into a fountain.
22 Topps M01 22.png The Trainer's Failure The first movie 22.jpg After the humiliation of Fergus, all of the Pokémon trainers in the vast hall stand ready for battle. Fergus, full of shame and rage, sends his huge Gyarados to battle Mewtwo, but the super-psychic Pokémon makes short work of the monstrous water dragon. Mewtwo then releases his human servant from under his control, and the woman turns out to be Nurse Joy! Mewtwo had kidnapped her and kept her under his control for weeks.
23 Topps M01 23.png Meowth Times Two The first movie 23.jpg After a spooky trip through the sewers of Mewtwo's Temple, Team Rocket arrives and discovers a giant computer complex in the heart of the palace. As they near the machinery, it springs to life and grabs Meowth. The villains grasp at Meowth, but not before the machine plucks out a few of its tail hairs. Team Rocket looks on as the Pokémon Replication System begins to grow an exact genetic clone of everyone's favorite Meowth!
24 Topps M01 24.png The Story of Mewtwo The first movie 24.jpg As the bungling villains look about the bio-engineered laboratory, they come across a recording from the original Pokémon research team. It relates how, years ago, they discovered a fossil of the ancient Pokémon, Mew, and genetically recreated it. Then after many tries, they were able to clone a super-Pokémon from Mew's DNA–Mewtwo. But the creature's anger was out of control, and it destroyed the entire lab...and the tape ends.
25 Topps M01 25.png The Battle of the Champions The first movie 25.jpg Pikachu tries to reason with Mewtwo, letting the super-Pokémon know that Ash is its friend, not master. Mewtwo, with a devilish smile, hurls Pikachu across the room into Ash's open arms. Ash challenges Mewtwo to a Pokémon battle. Mewtwo accepts with a smile. Team Rocket watches as clones of a Charizard, Blastoise and Venusaur climb out of their holding tubes and make their way up to their master's side.
26 Topps M01 26.png Round One Equals Defeat The first movie 26.jpg Ash and company watch in awe as the walls behind them part to reveal a fully functional Pokémon arena. The contestants take their places. First Fergus and Neesha send out their Venusaur and Blastoise to meet Mewtwo's cloned duplicates, then Ash releases his unpredictable Charizard. One by one all fall under the clones' might. The battles are over and the winner is clear, Mewtwo is victorious.
27 Topps M01 27.png Stealing Pokémon The first movie 27.jpg With a darkness in its voice, Mewtwo proclaims itself the winner, and claims the ultimate reward. Sinister, black Pokéballs materialize behind Mewtwo's head, and fly out at its command, snatching up every Pokémon in the room! There is no escape as trainers run rampant trying to protect their loyal Pokémon from the evil Mewtwo, who captures them–Pokéball and all!
28 Topps M01 28.png The Chase for Pikachu The first movie 28.jpg As the dark Pokéballs continue to snatch Pokémon left and right, Ash rushes to save Pikachu. Pikachu weaves and darts to evade its evil pursuers, and lets loose with a powerful volley of Thundershock attacks to no avail. An exhausted Pikachu falls from the immense height of Mewtwo's main stairwell, as Ash dives down the exhaust shaft after his friend into the bowels of Mewtwo's Palace.
29 Topps M01 29.png Clones!!! The first movie 29.jpg Team Rocket looks on in fear, as they watch the stolen Pokémon get deposited into the Pokémon Replication System and a clone of that specific Pokémon is spat out into the bio-organic test tubes, silently awaiting its master's command. Ash desperately tries to free the captured Pikachu, hanging onto the dark Pokéball for dear life, as the two are pulled into the cloning machine.
30 Topps M01 30.png Rescuing Pikachu The first movie 30.jpg "I don't have time for your dumb motto today," Ash yells as he leaps past Team Rocket into Mewtwo's cloning device. The machine sends hundreds of grasping arms to dislodge the stolen Pikachu from his grasp, but Ash fights, bites and thrashes about, until he and Pikachu are free. The Pokémon Replication System goes haywire, but Ash breaks free of the mechanical grip, moments before the machine is destroyed.
31 Topps M01 31.png Reunited! The first movie 31.jpg As Ash sits on the conveyor belt of the destroyed and charred remains of the Pokémon Replication System catching his breath, Pikachu is released from its dark prison. When the smoke clears, all of the stolen Pokémon are released from their black Pokéballs. As Ash happily reunites with Squirtle and Bulbasaur, he stands slowly with fire burning in his eyes.
32 Topps M01 32.png The Battle Renewed The first movie 32.jpg The humans watch in horror as the Poké-clones step forth to join their proud master ready to inherit the Earth, but suddenly the doors swing open and Ash steps forth with the army of original Pokémon behind him. Ash charges forth to attack Mewtwo, but he is swept aside with a powerful psychic blast. In the chaos, the original genetically re-created Mew arrives and floats to confront the angered super-Pokémon.
33 Topps M01 33.png Psychic Showdown The first movie 33.jpg The Pokémon family reunin immediately turns ugly as the two argue, Mew stating that a real Pokémon's strength comes from the heart and Mewtwo berating Mew for being weak. Mewtwo thrashes Mew with bolts of dark psychic energy, but after careful evading Mew retaliates with its own destructive blasts of colorful psychic energy. High into the night sky, their struggle destroys everything in their paths including the Pokémon arena.
34 Topps M01 34.png The Ultimate Match The first movie 34.jpg Mewtwo decided to up the stakes just one more time. In order to see which is truly superior and the most powerful–clone or original–Mewtwo uses its immense psychic powers to block all of the clones' and Pokémon's special abilities. It is Pokémon against Pokémon as the clones battle the original Pokémon in fierce combat to the very end...
35 Topps M01 35.png The Fight Rages The first movie 35.jpg Our heroes all watch with pain in their eyes as their beloved Pokémon and the vicious clones beat and batter each other. Pokémon are not meant to fight in this way and any outcome can't be good. Nurse Joy looks away in sorrow, while Brock, Misty and Ash try desperately to think of a way to stop the carnage.
36 Topps M01 36.png Ash's Sacrifice The first movie 36.jpg The real, passive Pikachu refuses to fight as its clone beats on it, for it knows that fighting doesn't solve any conflict. "Someone's got to take a stand, someone's got to say no and just refuse to fight, just like Pikachu," Ash cries. Mewtwo and Mew aim deadly psychic blasts at each other ready to destroy everything—humans and Pokémon alike. Just as the blasts surge from their fingertips, Ash leaps into the middle of the explosion!
37 Topps M01 37.png The Tears of Pokémon The first movie 37.jpg The dust settles and there in the middle of the desecrated arena lies the silent form of Ash. Pikachu walks solemnly over to its fallen master and tries with all of its electric power to revive him–but can't. Around the arena, every Pokémon and every Pokémon clone begins to cry and mourn. Pikachu's eyes well up with tears at the sight of its silent master. As they all cry silently, something magical happens...
38 Topps M01 38.png The Rebirth of Ash The first movie 38.jpg "The human sacrificed himself to save the Pokémon," says Mewtwo. "I pitted them against each other, but not until they set aside their differences did I see the true power they all shared deep inside." The magical tears of every Pokémon in the arena swarm about Ash like glittering fireflies in the night. Ash's lifeless forms glows with fiery light, and suddenly he sits up and smiles. Pikachu rushes to his master's arms.
39 Topps M01 39.png Farewell The first movie 39.jpg "I see now that the circumstances of one's birth are irrelevant. It is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are," Mewtwo says to the assembled group. In a bright electric-blue haze Mewtwo takes all of the clones, and flies off into the crystal skies in search of life's answers. In a final act of kindness, it uses its psychic powers to erase all of the pain and hatred from these events from the memories of those who witnessed them.
40 Topps M01 40.png Like It Never Happened The first movie 40.jpg We find our heros once more at the Old Shore Wharf Marina as if nothing had ever happened. Nurse Joy arrives to open the Pokémon treatment center, and the gang wonders how they got there. Miranda the harbormaster and Officer Jenny mention that the brewing storm that had caused so much concern is now dissipating. Ash, Misty, Brock and Pikachu walk outside with smiles on their faces and turn their eyes to the sky and the unknown.
41 Topps M01 41.png The Future Looks Bright The first movie 41.jpg As Ash looks upward, he sees something strange flying through the pillowy clouds–a new Pokémon? Just like the day he saw the rare Pokémon flying through the rainbow as he began his Pokémon journey with Pikachu. For Ash and his friends, the journey is just beginning. But whatever happened to Team Rocket? How did the silly villains end up on the beautiful and tropical New Island? Looks like Team Rocket's blasting off again!

Pikachu's Vacation cards

Set # Front Title Back Back text
42 Topps M01 42.png Pikachu's Vacation The first movie 42.jpg Ash, Brock and Misty decide to give their Pokémon a break from battling and fighting—a day vacation! As our heroes arrive at the Pokémon Island Resort, Pikachu, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Charizard, Pidgeotto, Zubat, Onix, Geodude, Vulpix, Psyduck, Togepi, Goldeen, Staryu and Starmie look happily towards a bright and sunny day of fun and adventure.
43 Topps M01 43.png Don't Cry, Togepi! The first movie 43.jpg When everybody rushes into the park, Pikachu, Squirtle, Psyduck and Bulbasaur are left with a crabby and extremely unhappy baby Togepi. The slightest peep out of anyone sets Togepi into fits of tears. Pikachu and Squirtle try to make Togepi laugh and smile by making silly faces and funny noises, but Togepi keeps on crying. Finally, Bulbasaur picks up Togepi in its vine whips and rocks it gently to sleep, singing a Pokémon lullaby.
44 Topps M01 44.png Looks Like Trouble... The first movie 44.jpg As soon as Togepi is asleep, trouble approaches. Tromping down the road and laughing loudly as if they owned the place, comes Buru, Raichu, Cubone and Pikablu. These loud-mouthed Pokémon walk past Togepi, while Pikachu tries its hardest to get them to quiet down, but they don't listen and go right on talking. What happens? They wake up Togepi of course!
45 Topps M01 45.png Togepi in Trouble The first movie 45.jpg As Pikachu tries to keep peace between Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Buru, Raichu, Pikablu and Cubone, Togepi wanders away unwatched. Pikachu spies baby Togepi just as it begins walking across a log bridge. In the rush to save Togepi, the log begins to roll under Pikachu's feet and it goes flying through the air and into the pool! Pikachu returns with Togepi to its friends a little bit tired and a whole lot wet!
46 Topps M01 46.png Peacemaker Pikachu The first movie 46.jpg Squirtle and Bulbasaur are none too happy about the fact that Buru, Pikablu, Raichu and Cubone woke up Togepi, and they plan on letting those loud-mouthed hooligans know it. Pikachu, knowing that fighting will do no good, tries to step in and make peace, but no one is listening. Squirtle and Bulbasaur confront Buru until Squirtle embarrassingly falls over, so Bulbasaur rolls its eyes until Buru falls down dizzy!
47 Topps M01 47.png The Water Race is on! The first movie 47.jpg Finally, Squirtle and Pikablu decide on a swimming race. Pikablu starts the race off with a bang and they're off! Pikablu takes the lead, but soon swims off course and bumps into Staryu who blasts Pikablu back to the start with its water cannon. Squirtle then gets caught on the back of Goldeen and also winds up back at the beginning. This time, Squirtle reaches the other side of the pool in seconds—only to find out that Pikablu had already won.
48 Topps M01 48.png Racing Cheek to Cheek The first movie 48.jpg Squirtle and Bulbasaur are sore losers after the race, so Raichu—just to be mean—starts zapping the ground around Togepi, scaring the baby. Pikachu runs over to shelter Togepi from the little zaps, but gets zapped in the rear end himself! A real electric shock showdown takes place as Pikachu and Raichu, with sparks flying, begin a mad race through the park.
49 Topps M01 49.png Rest and Relaxation at Last The first movie 49.jpg Coincidentally, Team Rocket's Pokémon are taking a little break from their dirty work, too. In a beautiful green field, bright blue skies and soft fluffy clouds, Meowth, Arbok and Weezing get settled to take a nap. Without warning, Pikachu and Raichu—sparks flying—bolt through the field knocking Meowth, Arbok and Weezing into the air. Looks like Team Rocket's blasting off again!
50 Topps M01 50.png The "Tail" End of the Race The first movie 50.jpg Pikachu and Raichu continue to race and pass all sorts of unsuspecting Pokémon. As the two racers turn a corner they run right over the sleeping Charizard's tail! Charizard, being none too happy about this, takes to the race and gets ahead of Pikachu and Raichu. The two electric Pokémon don't notice the large orange dragon in front of them, until Charizard uses its powerful wings to blow Pikachu and Raichu right over a cliff!
51 Topps M01 51.png Trapped Charizard The first movie 51.jpg Pikachu and Raichu land safely on a slumbering Snorlax. Meanwhile, Charizard, doing some fancy flying, is not looking where it's going, and flies right into a giant net! The totally tangled Charizard tumbles head over tail through the playground, and gets its head stuck inside of a giant igloo! When a napping Meowth pokes his head out again, he accidentally gets his whiskers burned off by the trapped Pokémon!
52 Topps M01 52.png Everyone...Pull!!! The first movie 52.jpg With the miserable Charizard stuck inside of a pretend igloo, Pikachu gathers everyone to join in and yank Charizard out. A rope is tied around Charizard's leg and everybody starts to pull and pull, but as much as they pull and struggle, Pikachu and the gang still aren't strong enough to get Charizard free. Meanwhile, Pikablu, Buru, Cubone and Raichu watch and laugh.
53 Topps M01 53.png C'mon, We Need Help The first movie 53.jpg An exhausted Pikachu rushes over to Buru and the gang and begs them to come and help. Charizard is crying and everyone is struggling. Finally, Pikablu and Raichu speak up and volunteer their services. Buru, Pikablu and Raichu race over to the team and pick up the rope. They all begin yanking on Charizard's leg again, trying their hardest to set it free. But why isn't Cubone helping?
54 Topps M01 54.png Teamwork The first movie 54.jpg Cubone watches everyone pull to help out Charizard, and is still upset and stubborn because a perfectly good day of fun and relaxation was ruined by Pikachu, Squirtle and Bulbasaur. Just because everyone else is helping out doesn't mean that Cubone has to help out, right? After watching Pikachu, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Raichu, Pikablu and Buru work together, Cubone decides to join their ranks.
55 Topps M01 55.png Success The first movie 55.jpg With Cubone's help, Charizard is freed and goes soaring through the air with Psyduck still holding the rope. As the two go careening through the sky, a very sleepy Meowth tries to nap, but is once again disturbed by the excitement. Meowth lights a bomb and prepares to hurl it at the other Pokémon, but out of nowhere, Charizard lands on top of it, and the bomb blows up under Charizard's rear end!
56 Topps M01 56.png Better than Ever The first movie 56.jpg As the chaos ceases, the Pokémon realize that all the damage they've caused must be fixed. Everybody chips in to rebuild the Pokémon park. Squirtle and Charizard rebuild the log jungle gym, Zubat, Pidgeotto and Onix help re-stack the tire climb and Pikachu, Squirtle, Cubone, Bulbasaur, Raichu and Buru all lend helping hands.
57 Topps M01 57.png Playtime The first movie 57.jpg All work and no play makes a Pokémon vacation really dull! After fixing up the park like new, everyone spends the rest of the day playing and having a wonderful time. Pikachu and Cubone swing on the swings, while Raichu, Squirtle, Buru and Bulbasaur all go spiraling down the slide and Vulpix and Togepi play in the sand box building castles. Now this is a vacation!
58 Topps M01 58.png A Great Day The first movie 58.jpg A hard day of work and an enormous amount of fun was had by all, and as the sun sets in the west we find our gang all tired out from such a busy day. From across the valley, Ash, Misty and Brock call out to their Pokémon that it is time to go. As everyone turns to leave, Pikachu turns and runs back to Buru, Raichu, Pikablu and Cubone with one last thing to do.
59 Topps M01 59.png New Friends and Farewells The first movie 59.jpg Pikachu extends its hand and gives Buru a handshake, now and forever signifying that great friendships were made this day. Everybody then says their good-byes and Pikachu runs off to join the rest of the bunch. Pikachu rushes down the road and leaps into Ash's open arms. A great day was had by all.

Trivia

A card mentioning "Donfan"
A card mentioning "Pikablu" and "Buru"
  • One of the cards from Mewtwo Strikes Back names Donphan as "Donfan", probably due to its trademarked Japanese name and the fact that Gold and Silver weren't out in North America yet. It was later corrected in the second printing.
  • The cards from Pikachu's Vacation name Marill as "Pikablu" and Snubbull as "Buru". This contradicts later promotional items for the movie, such as the short's novelization, which use the final English names for these Pokémon. The names were later corrected in the second printing, but spelt Snubbull as "Snubble".
    • "Buru" can be considered a transliteration of Snubbull's Japanese name, ブルー Bulu.
  • Many cards, such as #32 "The Battle Renewed", feature scenes from the original theatrical version of the film, not the kanzenban edition that included scenes that were specifically reanimated for North American audiences. This is likely a result of the cards being created before the English version of the movie was completed, considering the cards also did not feature finalized names for Donphan, Snubbull, and Marill.
