<!-- Detailed synopsis goes here. -->
The episode starts with Ash and Pikachu on a rock formation by the water's edge, psyching themselves up for the Hoenn League. The rest of the gang are watching the two of them. Out of nowhere, Drew and his Masquerain appear on another rock formation just as a huge wave comes in. Brock tries to warn Drew, but Drew orders a Silver Wind, and Masquerian launches the attack on the wave, breaking it up before it hits. Everyone's impressed with the power of the attack.

The group meets up with Drew to remark on the attack. Drew remarks that it's nothing, as he's getting ready for the Grand Festival. Drew asks about May's collection of ribbons, and May shows him her four ribbons. Drew then shows May his five ribbons, the number needed to get in the Grand Festival. After a little "rubbing it in," May and Drew are facing off against each other, with Beautifly and Masquerain. They start battling, but Team Rocket interrupts when they crash ashore with their Magikarp sub. TR says a few lines of their motto, then turns on a vacuum to suck Pikachu into the sub. Unfortunately, the vacuum is too strong and sucks up everyone on the beach. The group ends up into the control room (the room where TR pedals to power the sub) and onto TR.

<i>May and her friends are headed to Pacifidlog Island for the last Pokémon Contest before the Grand Festival. But their boat has engine trouble and the pilot, Carlos, lands on a nearby island. To reach Pacifidlog in time, our heroes must cross the island to the port and take a ferry. But the island is full of Donphan, and it's breeding season—all the male Donphan perform a Roll Out dance of love to impress the females, which can be dangerous for any Trainers who happen to be in the way!

Wobbuffet pops out and startles Max, which causes Max to hit a button on the wall, activating some powerful jets that send the sub blasting into the water. The sub hits a whirlpool, which then causes the sub to explode, subsequently sending everyone flying.  They all end up scattered over an island surrounded by mists.  Team Rocket is the first to recover from their fall. They find out that Wobbuffet is missing (accompanied by some imitations of Wobbuffet by James and Meowth). Elsewhere on the island, Ash, Brock, Max, and Pikachu get themselves together. Seems May and Drew are missing, so they strive to search the island for them.
Along the way, May and her friends cheer on a Donphan who wants to impress a brown female Donphan. Snorunt's Ice Beam turns the ground into an ice skating rink, and Donphan trips. Ash chases Snorunt, who won't go back into its Poké Ball, but just as he gets it back, the Donphan send everyone running! May and Ash make it to the port as the last ferry is about to leave... and May bravely decides to turn around and look for Max.

May and Drew are at the island's edge, watching the whirlpools that surround the island. Then out of nowhere, a motorboat with an old man piloting it comes through the mists. The old man comes up to the two and explains to them they are on Mirage Island. Drew is astounded, and May ask why. Drew explains that the rare Liechi Berry grows on this island, and it's a good berry for Pokeblocks. The old man say's he'll lend his assistance on friending their friends.
May's Grand Festival debut will have to wait another year, but everyone is reunited, along with their Donphan friend and the brown Donphan. Donphan does a dance of love that wins her heart, but Team Rocket shows up and captures them both. May, fed up with Team Rocket's constant schemes, calls on her Pokémon to free the Donphan and stop Team Rocket. Once the Donphan are freed, they Roll Out together and Team Rocket blasts off yet again.

Meanwhile, Brock is finding out that his compass is no good, as the needle is pointing everywhere and not stopping. Swellow flys to the group, shaking it's head as it has not found May. Ash and Brock decide to use a different tactic, using Corphish and Mudkip. As for Team Rocket, Jessie is frustrated that she can't find Wobbuffet, until she hears a soft cry from a Wynaut. Thinking it's from Wobbuffet, she follows the sound.
Carlos finds May and her friends sadly standing at the port. His boat is fixed, and he takes them to Pacifidlog. Now it's up to May to win her fifth ribbon!</i>

As for Drew and May, that are listening to the old man's tale on how he found the island as a young man, while standing on a river's edge. Drew then spots a plant with the rare berries. He and May both run up to the plant, but the edge is unstable, and both of them fall. The old man calls out his Bellspout and commands it to use Vine Whip to rescue them. May grabs on to the Vine Whip, then Drew, but she can't hold on. They both fall in the river, and down a waterfall, which knocks Drew out. As May struggles to keep Drew's head out of the water, a bunch of Wynauts come to their rescue.
Plot
Carlos informs Ash and ashfr that they are an hour away are from Pacifidlog Town, site of May's next Pokémon Contest challenge. Two islands come into sight, and the engine breaks. They land on the left island, Donto Island, while Carlos fixes the engine. He tells Ash it might take a few hours to fix, and tells them that if they want to be on time for the Contest, they could take a ferry on the other side of the island.

Ash's group find themselves at the waterfall, with the old man calling out to them. The old man explains the situation. Now the group knows they have to follow the river. Drew wakes up to find himself in a cave with May and a bunch of Wynauts, with the May explaining how the Wynauts rescued them. A Wynaut walks up to them with a couple of Liechi Berries. Both coordinators take one and bite into them. They are surprised by the taste (as in, 'blah!').
Soon, they come across a group of Donphan using Rollout, and almost get run over. Brock explains that it is mating season, so the male Donphan are aggressive while trying to impress the females. The same Donphan rolls towards them again, so they run away and leave the area. When they find a deserted area, they stop to rest. Suddenly, a female Donphan shows up and a bunch of males come over to impress it. Ash and his friends run away again. They call out Brock and Corphish to protect them, since Water types are super effective against Ground types.

It is now nighttime, and Team Rocket has not located Wobbuffet. However, Wobbuffet has appeared, eating a bunch of Liechi berries. Team Rockets ask where Wobbuffet got the berries and Wobbuffet points. Team Rocket rushes off to get their prize. Back in the cave, May has apparently decided to wait it out by playing with the Wynaut along with her Pokemon.
Meanwhile, MTR spots an opportunity and tells his teammates that they should give the Donphan to Giovanni. As Meowth suggests the Donphan would make for a replacement bowling ball or a great back massage, James reminds him that Donphan are rather destructive. Jessie pulls them both into line, declaring they need to give something to the Boss. They start setting up some nets as a female rolls by. They try to figure out where it was going, but get squashed by more males chasing it. Jessie tells James to have James heal them, but it decides to use Astonish, frightening Jessie and Meowth.

Team Rocket has now found the Liechi berries, and pick one to eat. They soon discover how it tastes. Meowth notes that while the berries aren't exactly good eating, they make good Pokeblocks.
Ash and friends notice some Donphan with mates up ahead. Everyone comments on them, but another Donphan starts rolling towards them. The Water Pokémon attack it, and knock it into a rock. Brock bandages its trunk, but suddenly a Shiny Donphan comes over and the injured Donphan chases after it. Later Ash sees the injured Donphan again as it tries to impress the Shiny female, but it just gets knocked out of the way by some other Donphan. As they watch, Snorunt comes out of its Poké Ball and uses Ice Beam on the surrounding grassland. Excited, Ash tells it to use the move again, and it freezes the ground under the Donphan, making them slip. The Shiny female expresses its disapproval of all the potential mates and walks away. Max says they shouldn't have brought out Snorunt, but it runs off as Ash tries to recall it.

May is still playing with the Wynauts when suddenly the group hears the sound of a vacuum. It's Team Rocket in a Wobbuffet balloon, with a vacuum attachment to suck up the berries. However, May gets sucked up as well. The balloon floats away to get away from Drew, but with the help of the Wynauts, Drew manages to follow. As Team Rocket sucks up all the berries on the island, May stuggles in her bonds as TR has tied her and hung her on a tree branch. She can't reach her Pokeballs, but then she sees Drew coming to the rescue.
Meanwhile, Team Rocket has made a pitfall trap, and they're all congratulating each other. Unnoticed, Snorunt walks up and freezes them in ice. Before the ice can melt, more Donphan roll by and crash into them, blasting them off. Afterwards, Ash manages to recall Snorunt back to its Ball. Another horde of Donphan roll towards the group, forcing everyone to flee. Brock and Max run one way, while Ash and May go the other. During their search, Ash and May reach the port just as the last ferry to Pacifidlog is about to leave. May, however, tells Ash that she won't get on, because even though she'll miss the Contest, she won't leave her brother. She remembers leaving her house and promising her mom to take care of Max, and Ash agrees. May begins tearing as the ferry leaves port, making her realize that she will have to begin her quest to the Hoenn Grand Festival all over again. She quickly wipes away her tears and suggests they keep moving.

At the cave, the group finds that it's empty. The old man notes that the plants here seems to be stripped of berries. Ash remarks it's the work of Team Rocket.
Brock and Max see the injured Donphan, and ask it if it had any luck. It tells them that it didn't. Meanwhile, May and Ash spot the Shiny female. May gives it some Pokémon food and tells it about the injured Donphan. Following the injured Donphan, Brock and Max soon find Ash and May alongside the female Donphan. The injured Donphan enters into another Rollout, but is knocked away by another male. All the other Donphan start rolling around the female, but the injured Donphan gets annoyed and knocks them all away. As the pair roll off together, Team Rocket appears and nets them both. Ash wants to battle them, but May interrupts and scolds the Rocket trio, complaining that she would be in Pacifidlog if it wasn't for them. Team Rocket gets worried and confused by May's rage. May sends out her Pokémon. May pulls the Donphan away with String Shot, May cuts the net with Razor Leaf, May uses Double Slap on them, and May uses Fire Spin. Finally, the two Donphan use Rollout and blast Team Rocket off again. Everyone thanks them and congratulates the injured Donphan on getting the Shiny female.
Jessie sends in Seviper and orders a Poison Tail. Drew calls out Roselia and orders a Magical Leaf. Seviper blocks Roselia's attack with its tail, and continues on with its attack. However, a counter by a Wynaut causes Seviper to hit itself with its own tail. Drew then orders a Petal Dance, and Jessie asks Wobbuffet to block the attack. But it turns out the attack was to free May from her bonds. Jessie orders another Poison Tail, but before it can attack, Seviper is hit with a Thunderbolt.

Ash's group arrives on the scene. Jessie and James call out for Dustox and Cacnea to even the odds. Dustox attacks with Poison Sting, but Drew calls out Masquerain and orders Silver Wind to block. James calls out for Pin Missile, and Meowth fires a futuristic cannon to power up that attack. But its block by a group of Wynaut forming a wall. Ash tells Pikachu to use Thunder, and the attack fries the balloon and separates the attachment containing the berries. May and Drew then orders Beautifly and Masquerain to use Silver Wind, which blasts Team Rocket into the horizon.
By evening, the group reaches the harbor. As they look at Pacifidlog on the horizon, Ash says that they could have done it but May wouldn't get on the boat without Max. Max apologizes to his sister, but May tells him it's okay and that she was happy that she saw the two Donphan roll in love together. Suddenly, they hear Carlos calling out that he fixed the engine, so they get on board the boat. While they head towards Pacifidlog, Carlos remarks that they are lucky because if he hadn't gotten there then, he would have thought that they got on the ferry. Max tells May that now she can be in the Pacifidlog Contest, much to her excitement.

The episode ends with the old man taking the trainers on his boat back to the other islands, as well as giving May a present: a basket full of Liechi berries.

May and her friends are headed to Pacifidlog Island for the last Pokémon Contest before the Grand Festival.

Carlos finds May and her friends sadly standing at the port. His boat is fixed, and he takes them to Pacifidlog. Now it's up to May to win her fifth ribbon!

Plot

Carlos informs Ash and his friends that they are an hour away are from Pacifidlog Town, site of May's next Pokémon Contest challenge. Two islands come into sight, and the engine breaks. They land on the left island, Donto Island, while Carlos fixes the engine. He tells Ash it might take a few hours to fix, and tells them that if they want to be on time for the Contest, they could take a ferry on the other side of the island.

They call out Mudkip and Corphish to protect them, since Water types are super effective against Ground types.

Meanwhile, Meowth spots an opportunity and tells his teammates that they should give the Donphan to the Boss. Jessie tells James to have Chimecho heal them, but it decides to use Astonish, frightening Jessie and Meowth.

May sends out her Pokémon. Beautifly pulls the Donphan away with String Shot, Bulbasaur cuts the net with Razor Leaf, Skitty uses Double Slap on them, and Combusken uses Fire Spin. Finally, the two Donphan use Rollout and blast Team Rocket off again. Everyone thanks them and congratulates the injured Donphan on getting the Shiny female.

Trivia

Chimecho with Wobbuffet's face

Errors

  • After being flattened by the Donphan, James appeared to be in perfect condition as he let out his Chimecho. In the very next scene, he is back to looking roughed up.
    • In the same scene, the sound of Wobbuffet's Poké Ball opening can be heard, despite Wobbuffet already being outside, out of the screen.
  • In the scene where Ash learns that Snorunt can use Ice Beam, the bandaged Donphan seems to change positions, then go back to the other spot, when on the icy ground.
  • When the Donphan roll by after Snorunt freezes Team Rocket, Corphish and Mudkip are seen getting out of the way, despite them not being out of their Poké Balls at the time.
  • In the Dutch dub, Ash calls his Pokédex Dextette, even though it has a male voice.
    • This also happens in the Brazilian dub. Interestingly, at the beginning of Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire, it used to be called by the original national name for the Pokédex, "Poké-Agenda".
  • Chimecho appears to have two tails on its back after Team Rocket recite their motto.

Dub edits

  • Brock refers to Ash's Snorunt as male in the English dub.
  • In the English dub, Carlos offers Ash and his friends dinner when they reach Pacifidlog Town. In the original Japanese version, he doesn't make any such offer.
