Hawlucha taking crash damage in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Crash damage is the damage taken by an attacking Pokémon when it fails to successfully use certain moves.

Mechanics

Moves with crash damage have their power boosted by 20% if the user has the Ability Reckless. If a move with crash damage fails due to there being no remaining targets, the user will not take any crash damage.

Generation I

If a move that has crash damage misses, the user takes 1 HP of crash damage.

Generation II

If a move that has crash damage misses or is blocked by a protection move, the user takes crash damage equal to ⅛ of the damage it would have dealt.

Generation III

If a move that has crash damage misses or is blocked by a protection move, the user takes crash damage equal to ½ of the damage it would have dealt.

Generation IV

If a move that has crash damage misses, is blocked by a protection move, or has no effect on the target, the user takes crash damage equal to ½ of the target's maximum HP.

Generation V onward

If a move that has crash damage misses, is blocked by a protection move, or has no effect on the target, the user takes crash damage equal to ½ of the user's maximum HP (rounded down).

In the anime

Scrafty being hurt by crash damage

Unlike the games, which state a Pokémon takes damage because they missed their target and crashed, the anime makes it clear that crash damage is an inherent attribute of their attack. Pokémon have demonstrated landing perfectly from a missed attack, but the crash damage occurs separately.

In Come What May!, Grace's Medicham suffered crash damage as May's Beautifly dodged its High Jump Kick, further increased by Beautifly using Silver Wind to speed up Medicham's fall.

In Saved by the Beldum, Gilbert's Hitmonlee hurt itself when it failed to hit Ash's Pikachu with High Jump Kick.

In Wheel of Frontier, Greta's Medicham was hurt when its High Jump Kick failed to hit Ash's Snorlax.

In Meowth's Scrafty Tactics!, a Scrafty was hurt when Ash's Tepig dodged its High Jump Kick.

Ash's Scraggy and Hawlucha have been seen to hurt themselves upon missing when using High Jump Kick.

In Showdown at the Shalour Gym!, Korrina's Mienfoo took crash damage after Ash's Hawlucha dodged its High Jump Kick.
