Just outside of New Bark Town, the player will meet Dude, who teaches players how to capture Pokémon. Dude will turn any player who has not yet received a Pokémon from Professor Elm away from the rest of Route 29. In Generation IV, the Dude is replaced by either Lyra or Ethan.
Route 29 leads west from New Bark Town, traveling through multiple patches of tall grass. The path then opens up at an intersection. To the west is a cuttable tree, beyond which is a more direct path to Cherrygrove City with no tall grass. Trainers without access to Cut must instead take the northern path through a break in a ledge.
Once Falkner, the Violet CityGym Leader, has been defeated, Tuscany can be found at this location on Tuesdays. The first time the player meets her, she will give them a Pink Bow in Generation II or a TwistedSpoon in Generation IV. In Generation IV, if the player has met all of the Week Siblings, Tuscany will give a Shock Ribbon the second time she is spoken to and any time afterward.
Just north of the intersection, Trainers will find another shortcut behind a second cuttable tree, which can be used to avoid two grass patches to the northeast. Trainers lacking Cut are forced to traverse either of the two grass patches. Regardless of which way a Trainer takes, the route curves to the west, passing a gate which leads north to Route 46. Route 29 continues west past the gate, leading Trainers through more tall grass before entering Cherrygrove City.
Similar to Route 1 in Kanto, Trainers traveling east from Cherrygrove to New Bark Town can hop over a series of ledges to avoid tall grass, allowing them to travel quicker between the two areas.
