Plot

The episode opens with recounting events of Ash and Greninja from previous two episodes. Ash returns to the Snowbelle Gym for a rematch. Inside the gym, Serena calls out Ash in a worried voice to which Ash responds by convincing her and the others that he will definitely win this time. Inside the gym, Wulfric is eager to battle Ash for a rematch only to be stopped by the Apprentice because he had not explained the rules yet. Wulfric convinces Apprentice that it's okay as Ash had a battle earlier he knows the rules.

After Apprentice says battle begin, Wulfric sends out Bergmite as his first Pokémon. At first Ash becomes little determined at Wulfric's choice but quickly sends Pikachu as his first Pokémon. Battle begins with Pikachu using Electro Ball against Bergmite which is easily dodged by Bergmite by skating on the ice battlefield as expected by Ash. Bergmite responds with Icy Wind which Pikachu manages to dodge but his lower body becomes frozen. Ash calls out for a Quick Attack, but Pikachu's speed gets reduced because of effect of Icy Wind and is easily dodged. Pikachu retaliates with Thunderbolt which scores a direct hit. Wulfric is surprised as Pikachu is still able to keep up with Bergmite's speed and calls out his secret move Sharpen which raises Bergmite's attack stat. Bergmite uses Rapid Spin, but even though Pikachu tries to dodge, it gets a direct hit. Pikachu run around the battlefield which melts the ice on its lower body. Wulfric tries to stop Pikachu by calling out Rapid Spin which is countered by Pikachu's Quick Attack, followed by an Iron Tail which knocks out Bergmite.

Wulfric sends out Avalugg as his second Pokémon. Pikachu starts by scoring a direct hit with Thunderbolt only to be stopped by Avalugg's Avalanche attack. Pikachu starts skating on ice to dodge any further attacks but is followed by Avalugg's Gyro Ball. Pikachu uses Iron Tail to create a hole on the battlefield to trap Avalugg's Gyro Ball to which Wulfric responds by calling out Stone Edge. Even though Pikachu tries to counter with Thunderbolt, he gets a direct hit and is knocked out of the battle. Ash sends out Talonflame as his second Pokémon which begins by scoring a direct hit with Flame Charge. Avalugg retaliates with Stone Edge which barely hits Talonflame. Talonflame responds with a direct hit from Steel Wing. Avalugg attacks with Avalanche which is responded by an extremely powerful Flame Charge from Talonflame, enough to knock out Avalugg.

Wulfric sends out Abomasnow as his last Pokémon. Abomasnow summons a hailstorm due to its Snow Warning Ability. Talonflame tries to open the battle with Steel Wing but gets a hit from Abomasnow's Wood Hammer instead. It retaliates with Flame Charge but it gets stopped By Abomasnow's Ice Shard followed by Wood Hammer which knocks out Talonflame.

Ash sends out Greninja as his last Pokémon against Abomasnow. Greninja does a great opening by scoring direct hit with two successive Aerial Aces followed by two Water Shuriken. After that, it successfully stops Abomasnow's Energy Ball with Cut and Wood Hammer by freezing itself in ice. To gain more advantage in battle, Greninja activates its Ash-Greninja form and scores direct hits with multiple Aerial Ace attacks. After it stopped Wood Hammer with Cut and scored direct hit, it followed suit by using a giant Water Shuriken.

Wulfric is impressed with Ash-Greninja as he Mega Evolves his Abomasnow which starts to get upper hand in battle. Mega Abomasnow stops giant Water Shuriken with Ice Punch and Double Team with Wood Hammer. Afterwards, it counters Cut with Ice Punch that freezes the former move.. Just as Mega Abomasnow was going to finish the battle with an extremely powerful Wood Hammer, Ash made Ash-Greninja use frozen Cut attacks to skate on ice as well as dodging an incoming Ice Shard attack. Ash-Greninja distracts Wulfric with a giant Water Shuriken to reach close to Mega Abomasnow and wins the battle by hitting Mega Abomasnow with Aerial Ace. Ash's friends are happy that he won.

Wulfric gives Ash the Iceberg Badge which allows the latter to qualify for the Kalos League. At night outside the Pokemon Center, Ash vows to train hard to win the Kalos League with his Pokémon.

Trivia

File:Title Card XY Ash V2.png
The title card segment focuses on Ash for this episode
  • Poké TV: "Poké Love TV" Focusing on Abomasnow.
  • This episode is the first time since Just One of the Geysers where Ash uses a different line-up of Pokémon in a rematch against a Gym Leader. In this case, he substitutes his Hawlucha for Pikachu.
  • The tactic used by Ash where Greninja uses the frozen Cut "knives" as ice skates to maneuver around the field and avoid Ice Shard is identical the move used by Ash's Chimchar during Ash's Snowpoint Gym battle with Candice, where it used an ice shard to skate around the field.
    • Similarly, both instances were used against an Abomasnow, and both times were used to avoid Ice Shard and Wood Hammer.
  • Clemont's Dedenne, Ash, Bonnie, and Clemont narrate the preview for the next episode.
    • At the end of the preview, Ash and Bonnie say the catchphrase "Everyone, keep Pokémon!", with Bonnie saying the "keep" part and Ash saying the rest, instead of Ash saying his "Everyone, get Pokémon!" phrase.

Errors

  • Bonnie is missing her ponytail on multiple occasions.
    • Once when Ash and his friends arrive at the gym as the doors open.
      • In the same shot, the space between Pikachu and Serena's head is colored the same as Pikachu, making it seem as if his head were larger.
    • As Ash and his friends walk into the gym and again when Wulfric speaks to Ash before the battle starts.
    • After Ash's Greninja transforms into Ash-Greninja.
  • Throughout the episode, Clemont's Dedenne appears to be much larger than usual.
