Walking Pokémon are Pokémon that walk alongside their Trainer when they would normally be inside their Poké Ball when not in battle. In certain games, certain Pokémon can be released from their Poké Balls out of battle and on the field, following along behind the player in a similar fashion to Stat Trainers and other people. Most Pokémon will interact will the player when talked to anytime on the field, either showing their expressions or holding items.

In the games

Pokémon Yellow

Main article: Red's Pikachu (game)

In Pokémon Yellow, when the player runs into Professor Oak at the entrance of Pallet Town, a wild Pikachu appears and attacks Oak, and Oak is forced to capture it to keep the player out of danger. Back in the lab, Blue will obtain an Eevee, the Pokémon originally intended for the player. Professor Oak will then give the player the Pikachu he caught. Pikachu refuses to stay in its Poké Ball and insists on following the player around.

By turning around and talking to the Pikachu, the player can learn how it feels and thinks about the player. At the beginning of the game, Pikachu is unhappy to be stuck with the player as a Trainer. By using it in lots of battles and keeping it healthy, however, it will change its attitude towards the player. Pikachu displays a variety of expressions, from anger to shock to fear to love, as it reacts to the player and its surroundings. If Pikachu is traded to another game, evolved, and traded back, it will no longer follow the player.

Pikachu has many expressions, and some events will trigger some expressions. For example, when it first meets the player, Pikachu is not happy to see the player, and will sometimes turn its back towards them. If the player decides to speak to Pikachu, a small image of Pikachu's current emotion will pop up. The image also shows how much the Pikachu likes the player. Further on in the game, Pikachu will begin to like the player, and smile at them. When Pikachu enters the Pokémon Fan Club, it will fall in love with a Clefairy, changing its expression again. When first going in to the Sea Cottage, Bill was experimenting with his cellular teleportation device when he was accidentally turned into a Clefairy, Pikachu will run to him and exchange confused looks. After he is rescued, and transported back to his original self, Pikachu will have a look of shock. Pikachu will also change his expression when it is inflicted with a status condition, such as poison, where Pikachu will feel sick, or under sleep conditions, where Pikachu will be asleep. In Pewter City's Pokémon Center, there is a Jigglypuff that will sing a lullaby if talked to, and Pikachu will fall asleep and not move unless awakened by the player. The center's nurse will also comment on Pikachu's sleep if talked to. When entering the Pokémon Tower, Pikachu will feel scared and shudder fearfully. If the player uses a fishing rod, then checks Pikachu, it will appear with a bucket over its head. Besides showing Pikachu's emotions and happiness, the image can also show several other 'events' such as when Pikachu learns Thunderbolt, where it will shock the player.

Amity Square

Main article: Amity Square

Amity Square is located north of Hearthome City, in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. Only certain small Pokémon can be taken for walks in Amity Square, usually of a "cute" appearance. In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, there are 11 Pokémon out of the 493 Pokémon that are able to enter Amity Square, while in Pokémon Platinum there are 20 out of the 493 Pokémon that are able to enter Amity Square. In Pokémon Platinum, more Pokémon are allowed in than before, and the area has been expanded and redesigned.

If the player decides to speak to with the Pokémon that is following them, they may give a little description of what they are feeling and their facial expression; however, unlike Red's Pikachu, a little image of the Pokémon will not show up. With every 200 steps, the Pokémon will find an item off the ground. These items come in the form of accessories or berries, and the types of items found depend on the type of Pokémon. For example, a Pikachu can find a Belue, while a Clefairy can find a Stump. By talking to the Pokémon, they will give the player the item they have found.

Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver

Gold and Soul with their Pokémon

In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the walking Pokémon are much similar to Red's Pikachu in Pokémon Yellow, as different Pokémon walk around everywhere with the Trainer. As soon as the player obtains their first starter Pokémon, Professor Elm will say that their Pokémon can come out and walk along with their Trainer. Originally, this would seem to follow the precedent set with Pokémon Yellow, but every single Pokémon can be sent out to follow their Trainer. From Bulbasaur to Arceus, the player can choose any of their favorite Pokémon following them. In order to release a Pokémon from their Poké Ball and walk by the player, the player must change the Pokémon's order in the party to the top.

Interaction

Like with Red's Pikachu in Pokémon Yellow and Pokémon in the Amity Square, the player has the ability to interact with their Pokémon. If the player decides to speak to the Pokémon, they can turn around and talk to them. They will give the player the mood that they are in, whether it's happy with the player, apathetic, or is in trouble due to low health or a status condition. Using this will allow the player to be able to quickly understand how their Pokémon is doing. Pokémon also interact with events happening outside the battle; for example, the player's event Pichu will become interested in a wild notched-ear Pichu during an event set in the Ilex Forest.

Items

Similar to Pokémon in Amity Square, the player's Pokémon in this game will also sometimes find and pick up items. These items include accessories or berries for their Pokémon. It is still unknown which specific items each Pokémon pick up.

In the anime

Misty carrying Togepi

Several Pokémon walk with their Trainers outside of their Poké Ball. The most common example is Ash's Pikachu. On Ash's first day of becoming a Trainer, Professor Oak gave him Pikachu, who initially did not like its new Trainer, and refused to go into its Poké Ball. Even after Ash befriended Pikachu, he still knew that Pikachu disliked its Poké Ball and allowed it to stay out.

Another infamous Pokémon that stayed out of its Poké Ball is Misty's Togepi. Togepi was found as a Pokémon egg by Ash in Grandpa Canyon in Attack of the Prehistoric Pokémon. When the egg hatched into Togepi, it chose Misty as its Trainer, thinking that she was its mother. Instead of keeping Togepi in a Poké Ball like most Pokémon, Misty chose to keep it out and hold it in her arms. Togepi later evolved into Togetic and was released, and so is not considered a walking Pokémon as there is no Poké Ball for it to stay in.

The latest walking Pokémon of the anime is Dawn's Piplup. While normally kept in its Poké Ball in the beginning of the Diamond & Pearl series, Piplup has become more accustomed to being outside of its Poké Ball, having a regular appearance since Journey To The Unown!. Dawn usually carries it around in her arms during travel.

Several of Team Rocket's Pokémon travel with them out of their Poké Ball. Much like Ash's Pikachu, Meowth does not stay inside a Poké Ball, and it is never mentioned if he was ever captured by either member of Team Rocket he travels with. Jessie's Wobbuffet emerges from its Poké Ball frequently, without its Trainer's asking, and often at inappropriate times. Wobbuffet is thus somewhat a fourth team member.
