Poochyena (Japanese: ポチエナ Pochiena) is a Dark-type Pokémon found early in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Pokémon Emerald. In Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire, you must choose a Treecko, Torchic, or Mudkip to stop one of these Pokémon from chasing Professor Birch.

Poochyena comes with the ability Run Away, which guarantees that you can always run from a wild Pokémon as long it does not have an ability or use a move that prevents escaping.

Poochyena evolves via level into Mightyena starting at Level 18.

In the anime

When Prof. Birch got separated from Ash Ketchum in AG001, he was attacked by a pack of these Bite Pokémon (similar to what happens in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire).

One of the Badge Thieves from "The Blue Badge of Courage" had a Poochyena.

In AG011, Max befriended a Poochyena and helped it to evolve.

Pokédex entries

Pokémon Ruby / Pokémon Pinball: Ruby/Sapphire
At first sight, Poochyena takes a bite at anything that moves. This Pokémon chases after prey until the victim becomes exhausted. However, it may turn tail if the prey strikes back.
Pokémon Sapphire
Poochyena is an omnivore - it will eat anything. A distinguishing feature is how large its fangs are compared to its body. This Pokémon tries to intimidate its foes by making the hair on its tail bristle out.
Pokémon Emerald
It savagely threatens foes with bared fangs. It chases after fleeing targets tenaciously. It turns tail and runs, however, if the foe strikes back.
Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen
It has a very tenacious nature. Its acute sense of smell lets it chase a chosen prey without ever losing track.

Name origin

Poochyena's name, a misspelling of its Japanese name, may be a combination of pooch, a nickname for a dog, and hyena.
