Route 116 is an east-west route in western Hoenn. It is host to the headquarters of the drilling team in charge of Rusturf Tunnel's development, and the only location in Hoenn in which Skitty and Nincada are obtainable in the wild.

Route description

There are three large patches of grass on the route, containing wild Pokémon at low levels. This route is, also, the first area where trainers will encounter wild Whismur. In addition, it is one of three places at which trainers can catch wild Taillow, native to Hoenn.

To the east of this route, near the entrance of Rusturf Tunnel, is the Tunneler's Rest House, which isn't accessible until the player rescues Mr. Briney's Peeko from a Team MagmaR or Team AquaSE Grunt. Inside, are workers who were previously working on the construction of Rusturf Tunnel, but stopped due to the harm it brought to the wild Pokémon in it.

A relatively large portion of the route requires Cut to access. On the east side of the route, near the entrance to Rusturf Tunnel, there is a small cave, concealed by a small indent, where a secret base can be made.

Trainer Tips

TRAINER TIPS
If you want to stop a POKéMON from
evolving, press the B Button while it
is trying to evolve.
The startled POKéMON will stop.
This is called an evolution cancel.

TRAINER TIPS
Your BAG has several POCKETS.
Items you obtain are automatically
placed in the appropriate POCKETS.
No TRAINER can afford to be without
a BAG of their own.

Trivia

  • School Kid Jerry notably owns a Ralts and later obtains a Banette. In the anime, Max is based on the School Kid Trainer class and befriends a Ralts and a Shuppet, the pre-evolved form of Banette.
  • A Youngster on this route shares a name with the first trainer encountered in the Johto-based games (excepting, of course, the rival.)
