The Goldenrod Tunnel (Japanese: コガネちかつうろ Kogane Tunnel), known as Goldenrod Underground or Underground Path prior to Generation IV, is a shopping district stretching below Goldenrod City. This path contains a barber shop, Herb Shop, and a shop selling valuable items; however, the shops that are open at any given time depend on the days of the week, and in some cases, time. Trainers also litter this path, and there is an entrance to the basement of the Goldenrod Department Store, initially occupied by Team Rocket. After the Basement Key has been obtained, the player will be able to pass through the locked door. Here, a series of switches colored Red, Blue and Green (labeled "SWITCH 1", "SWITCH 2", and "SWITCH 3" in Generation II). In order to get through the maze, the switches must be turned on in a sequence. While turning them on, pronounced panels of the walls will disappear. Once getting through the maze, there is another switch which is colored purple (labeled "EMERGENCY" in Generation II). This switch causes all wall which are changed by the switches to disappear.
