Synopsis

The episode begins with Ash, Misty, and Tracey riding on a ferry that will take them from Mandarin Island South to Trovita Island. Ash is thinking only of winning his third Orange Island Gym Badge. As the ferry approaches Trovita Island, Ash asks about the rock pillars that surround the island, and Tracey explains that they formed millions of years ago when the island rose up out of the ocean. Misty wonders what the Gym Leader will be like and Ash remarks that it doesn't matter because he is going to win.

Just then, Pikachu hears something. The gang look to find a young girl and a Seel drowning in a whirlpool! Wasting no time, Misty takes Staryu and heads off to rescue the girl. Ash soon follows with Lapras and Tracey remains on the ferry.

Team Rocket spot the ferry from their Magikarp submarine but are sucked into the whirlpool.

Misty rescues the girl and, once they are safely on Lapras, instructs her never to swim alone because the current may get too rough. The girl is immediately enamored by Misty's kind heart.

Meanwhile, on a cliff overlooking the bay below, a worried young man had been calling for Mahri, the little girl with the Seel. When he sees Misty rescue the girl, he runs down to the pier, followed by an entourage of four other men.

The young man reunites with Mahri, who is revealed to be his sister. He personally thanks Misty for saving Mahri and completely ignores Ash and Tracey. He is obviously smitten by her and calls her amazing. With a snap of his fingers, the young man orders his entourage to give Misty several bouquets of flowers. Another snap brings soothing music, and the young man asks Misty to dance.

She agrees and while they are dancing the young man compliments her ability as a Pokémon trainer. He asks her to stay on the island and instruct the other trainers in his Gym. Misty is shocked to find she is dancing with the Trovita Island Gym Leader, but Ash wastes no time in challenging him to a match. He ignores Ash's request and continues dancing with Misty. Mahri pleads with her older brother to listen to Ash, and he finally stops dancing. The Gym Leader introduces himself as Rudy and does a showy dance move.

Rudy explains that before Ash can battle him in a Gym match, he must pass an attack test. Ash must use his Pokémon to attack and knock down all the targets that pop up as they ride on a high speed motorboat down a river. Ash agrees and calls on Pikachu to use Thundershock to destroy the first target. Ash starts to brag but finds Rudy paying more attention to Misty than to him. Ash calls on Charizard to take down the next target, but it fails to obey. Before he can recall his Pokémon, Charizard has already fried Misty a little. Both she and Rudy reprimand Ash for calling on a Pokémon that he cannot control.

Team Rocket appear in the submarine and begin their motto. A target pops up in front of them, however, and Ash uses Squirtle's Water Gun to take it down, inadvertently sending Team Rocket blasting off again. Ash finishes the test by using Pikachu, Squirtle and Bulbasaur to knock down the rest of the targets.

That evening at the Pokémon Center, Rudy confirms that Ash passed his attack test. He schedules a three-on-three Type battle for the following day. Ash chooses Electric, Grass and Water types, meaning both trainers have to use one of each type.

Rudy then invites Misty to join him for dinner. Mahri says that her older brother is a great cook. Misty happily agrees, leaving Ash, Tracey, and Pikachu feeling a little left out.

Still at the Pokémon Center, Ash and Tracey contact Professor Oak. Ash updates him on how his training is progressing and Tracey show him a sketch of a Pokémon he had never seen before. Ash then sits down for a less-than-mediocre dinner.

Meanwhile, Misty is just getting done with her meal. She thanks Rudy for fixing such a delicious dinner. Mahri suddenly shouts that she always wanted a big sister just like Misty. Mahri wants her to stay with her forever because she's the only girl at the Gym. Misty and Rudy obviously feel awkward because of Mahri's openness, so Rudy suggests that Misty get introduced to the Pokémon at the Gym.

Once there, Misty is surprised to see the likes of Golem, Ninetales and Rhydon dancing to modern music. Rudy explains that it's not enough to just teach Pokémon a lot of attacks and that they should learn new and different skills because it helps them grow. Then, Rudy asks Misty to dance and she agrees.

Just as they are having fun dancing, Rudy asks that Misty stay on Trovita Island with them. They stop dancing and Misty is given food for thought from that offer. He asks her to think it over and give him the answer after the match.

The next morning, at a platform stadium surrounded by water and the spikes. Spectators including Tracey and Misty look on from a hot air balloon hovering over the platform, as the commentator introduces the competitors from atop a giant Pidgeot and explains that they will be using electric Pokémon first. The match begins with Ash choosing Pikachu and Rudy starting with Electabuzz. Pikachu uses a powerful Thunderbolt, but it is just absorbed by Electabuzz who then charges at Pikachu. Pikachu tries to dodge with a Quick Attack that causes a head on collision. Pikachu is sent flying to the ground due to a sheer size difference and is finished with a Thunder Punch. The first victory goes to Rudy.

Grass type Pokémon are next up to battle. Bulbasaur is Ash's choice Pokémon and Rudy counters with Exeggutor. He then asks for music. As Exeggutor dances around Bulbasaur's Razor Leaf Ash begins to worry, as this match is two out of three. The coconut headed Pokémon unleashes an Egg Bomb knocking Bulbasaur to the ground. Exeggutor towers over the lowly seed Pokémon who begins to sweat. Ash tells Bulbasaur to use Sleep Powder, which puts Exeggutor to sleep and tumbling down the side of the cliff. It falls towards Team Rocket who is clambering back up the cliff. They look up to see the green tufted Pokémon hurtling toward them and are bowled back down to the sea below. Bulbasaur saves the snoozing Exeggutor with its Vine Whip, but the Rockets continue to fall. The second victory goes to Ash.

During all of this, Mahri asks Misty what Rudy said to her last night. Misty just uneasily lies that it was nothing important, but she's still thinking about that chance of a lifetime Rudy offered her.

It comes down to water types to battle it out for the badge. Rudy dedicates his next match to "The girl who stole my heart" (Misty) and sends Starmie to face Ash's Squirtle. They exchange Water Guns and Rudy becomes impatient. He orders for musical accompaniment and Starmie begins to spin on the spot. Rudy sweeps his hand through his hair and commands Starmie to spin into a Thunderbolt! To everyone's amazement, the water Pokémon unleashes an electrifying Thunderbolt attack hitting Squirtle. Ash yells out, not believing his eyes. Misty, whose mind had been ticking over what Rudy had said about staying, finally makes her decision. She shouts from the balloon that she wants Ash to win and that he's the only one able to bring out Squirtle's real power. A shocked Rudy realizes that Misty really wants Ash (although Ash doesn't) and loses all the style that he started with. Squirtle breaks from the Thunderbolt with a Water Gun, which catapults the tiny turtle off of the side of the platform towards the spikes. All looks lost as Squirtle Withdraws into its shell. More surprises come however when it releases immense jets of water from each of the holes in its shell. The power from this blast cannon it back up the cliff face. Misty explains that the battle has caused Squirtle to learn Hydro Pump, the most powerful water attack. Lunging at Starmie, Squirtle's newly learned Hydro Pump connects causing the star-shaped Pokémon to skid across the ground. A well-aimed Skull Bash sinks Starmie into submission. Rudy is beaten and Ash earns another badge and raising Squirtle in the air he cheers his team on.

Back at the beach, Rudy hands out two things: the Spike Shell Badge for Ash, and a final bunch of flowers for Misty. Rudy then tells Ash that he's a lucky guy for being the idol of Misty's affections, but Ash still doesn't get it. As the heroes sail off on Lapras into the sunset, they look back at the island where Ash won his third Orange League Badge, and Misty won a young man's heart.

Trivia

  • PM-103 was the name of the ferry that carried Ash and co. to Trovita Island. The initials appear to stand for Pocket Monsters and the number corresponds with the episode number.
  • The mystery Pokémon in Tracey's sketch that he was showing to Prof. Oak is Elekid. Tracey asks if it could be a new Pokémon and Prof. Oak laughingly disagrees. This was meant to be ironic because the viewers knew that Prof. Oak's observation was incorrect. That is because by the time this episode first aired, most people already knew Elekid was a new Pokémon because it was featured in the movie short Pikachu's Rescue Adventure.

Errors

  • Rudy says that Ash must knock down all the targets during the attack test in order to battle him, but even though Charizard fails to hit a target, Ash still passes the test.

Dub edits

  • It should be noted that Mahri's relation to Rudy was not changed when this episode came to America. Contrary to popular belief, Mahri has always been Rudy's little sister--never his daughter.
  • Charizard Chills!, Pokémon Water War, and Pokémon Food Fight were all aired before this episode in the U.S. This caused mass confusion to many American fans. The main one being is to why in the episode before, The Mystery Menace, the group was so close to arriving to Trovita Island and then all of a sudden all of a sudden Ash has his badge and is heading off somewhere else without the episode in which he faught the Trovita Island Gym Leader. However once the saga came out on DVD, they were put in the correct order.
