Synopsis

Something gets stuck in Pikachu's throat which is making its voice sound weird. Brock quickly suggests to take Pikachu to the Pokémon Center. They run down the path to look for a Pokémon Center, but there isn't one for miles. They eventually reach a hospital for humans and asks help from the doctor in charge there. Ash's plead had no effect on the doctor, but when Misty starts pleading, the doctor gave in, saying that he can't resist a pretty face. After checking on Pikachu, the doctor states that there was something stuck in Pikachu's throat. The doctor manages to remove the thing in its throat, which happens to be an apple.

The phone then starts ringing. Brock answers the call and learns that it's Nurse Joy. She informs Brock that there has been a violent accident involving a truck of Pokémon stolen by Team Rocket, and the Pokémon are in dire need of medical attention. The extra room of the hospital is needed. Meanwhile, Team Rocket are at the scene of the accident, with Jessie and James having a heated argument. Team Rocket is feeling down because the charm on his head is missing. Nurse Joy asks Dr. Proctor for his help. Instead of answering the nurse seriously, he asks her out, making her angry. After that, the doctor gives everyone their uniforms and equipment, saying that he needs their help because he is short on staff. When the injured Pokémon arrives, everyone starts working. Ash calls out his Bulbasaur to hold down Cubone who keeps on struggling in pain. Misty comforts it and successfully calms it down. Dr. Proctor says that Misty is a natural.

Team Rocket comes in, bringing more patients, namely Jessie's Arbok and a Raticate. The doctor proceeds on asking Jessie out for some pizza. Jessie is impressed with the doctor. Ash comes and tells the doctor not to help Team Rocket, but Dr. Proctor explains that it was his job to heal not to judge.

On the other hand, Meowth is still stressing over the lost of his charm. Chansey tries to cheer him up but did not succeed.

Everyone is busy helping all the injured Pokémon, even Jessie and James pitch in. They are all working together diligently. Later on, while treatment is still going on, Jessie and James decide to steal all the injured Pokémon. They take off the uniforms and starts reciting their motto. They didn't manage to finish it because Meowth unexpectedly interrupts them. Jessie and James tries to stop Ash, Misty and Brock. Chansey faces James, who threatens Ash with a big needle. He commands Arbok and then Weezing to attack Chansey, but they didn't budge one bit. Dr. Proctor states that Arbok and Weezing will not attack Chansey because they were indebted to it. Getting angry, Jessie throws a beaker at him, but Dr. Proctor simply cuts it in half using a scalpel. Team Rocket runs out of the building when Ash and his friends push the stretchers towards them. Team Rock ends up blasting off when the Voltorb that James took self-destruct. Upon landing, the charm on Meowth's head pops out, making him very happy.

With the Pokémon all treated, Dr. Proctor tell Ash and his friends that they should be doctors and asks them if they want to stay and train. Misty states her interest in becoming a doctor but she still has a lot to learn about water Pokémon. Ash and friend then bid farewell to the good doctor and continue on their journey.

Trivia

  • This is the only episode (with the obvious exception of EP038) to feature Porygon (although in this case it's a cameo).

Errors

  • While Misty and Jessie are trying to help a Voltorb caught in a Weepinbell, Doctor Proctor tells Jessie that Voltorb can self-destruct, to which she seems not to know. However, Jessie saw several Voltorb self-destruct when Ash battled Koga.
    • Interestingly enough, in that episode, James was the only one of the three who knew what a Voltorb was, and when Meowth was holding a Voltorb up, he yelled to him "That's a Voltorb!" but in this episode, their positions are swapped. At the end of this episode, James manages to steal a Voltorb, apparently unaware that it will selfdestruct, and Jessie and Meowth panic when they see Voltorb, and Meowth says "That's a Voltorb!"

Dub edits

  • In the Kids' WB! version, the scene where Dr. Proctor is injected with the anesthetic is cut. However, in every other version, including the one that airs on Cartoon Network, the scene is kept in.
  • On that same note, the sound effects are kept in, and the anesthetic scene is frozen.
  • In the dub, after getting injected with the anesthetic, Dr. Proctor goes to sleep for six hours. In the original, he sleeps for about nine hours.
