Ash, Brock and Dawn meet Paul again at Lake Acuity for the battle that Reggie suggested Ash and Paul should have. Ash is determined to finally defeat Paul, and Paul is eager to beat Ash, especially after discovering Ash has won the Brave Symbol — the only achievement that his brother does not have. As the battle of Ash and Paul begins, the one which will attack first is decided by the Coin Toss. Ash wins, so he chooses Buizel, while Paul sends out Torterra. But Ash quickly returned Buizel and chooses to send out Gliscor, the battle then begins. Gliscor used Sand-Attack while Paul commands Torterra to use Giga Drain but easily dodged by Gliscor, Ash orders Gliscor to use X-Scissor which hits and pushes Torterra backwards. Paul orders Torterra to use Frenzy Plant which was dodged by Gliscor, Gliscor was ready to use Fire Fang which hits Torterra badly then followed it up with X-Scissor then a Steel Wing attack, but when Gliscor hits Torterra, Gliscor's tail dangles down and was bitten by Torterra which pins Gliscor in one spot, then wraps Gliscor with Giga Drain. Ash's commands Gliscor to use Fire Fang at Torterra's Giga Drain letting Gliscor escape, but Gliscor was badly injured so Ash returned Gliscor back into its ball. Now that Torterra's exhausted, Ash sends out Staraptor he then commands it to use Brave Bird while Paul's Torterra countered it with Stone Edge which sends Staraptor come crashing to the ground. Paul returns Torterra to its Poké Ball then sends out Weavile, then the battle continues. Ash orders Staraptor to use Quick Attack but Weavile protected itself. Weavile uses Swords Dance while Staraptor was commanded to use Aerial Ace. Weavile changes it's attack from Swords Dance to Blizzard which hits Staraptor and making its Aerial Ace fail but it continues to fly. Weavile then climbs to Staraptor's and uses Metal Claw. Paul orders his Weavile to use Metal Claw while Ash commands Staraptor to use Close Combat, which hits Weavile badly then Staraptor continues attacking the Pokémon with the attack. Weavile uses Blizzard which Staraptor dodged and countering it with Brave Bird, Staraptor was hurt but Weavile was out of the battle meaning that Ash earned his first win.
Ash returns Staraptor to its ball while Paul sends out Electabuzz to battle Ash's Grotle, then the battle re-begins. Grotle was told to use Energy Ball but Electabuzz protected itself by using Light Screen. Paul quickly substitutes Electabuzz, returning it to its Poké Ball, sending out Honchkrow. Grotle uses Razor Leaf at Honchkrow but Honchkrow easily dodges them all then using Night Slash which hits Grotle. Ash orders Grotle to use Energy Ball the second time, but Honchkrow was protected by Light Screen. Then, Honchkrow uses Haze to blind Grotle. Ash orders Grotle to use Razor Leaf but before it hits, Honchkrow was ready to use Night Slash, which hits Grotle the second time, but Grotle was too exhausted to fight so Ash told Grotle to use Synthesis. Honchkrow was ready to hit Grotle with its Aerial Ace, Grotle uses Rock Climb. However, Honchkrow was the winner of the match. Paul returns Honchkrow to its Poké Ball. Pikachu told Ash that it's ready to battle, so Ash chooses Pikachu to battle the next round, while as everyone's surprise, Paul was revealed to have a Magmortar.
