Some Seedot, Nuzleaf, and Shiftry are sleeping in a large tree at night. One of the Seedot slips off its branch, bounces off a Shiftry's head, and onto a Nuzleaf, causing Nuzleaf to slip and fall from its branch onto a Vileplume. The Vileplume runs away from the tree, taking Nuzleaf with it. When Nuzleaf wakes up in the morning, away from its home, it calls out for its friends, but no one answers. When it goes to look for them, it slips down a cliff and disappears.

Meanwhile the next day, Ash, Dawn and Brock are walking down a road. Brock and his Bonsly are reading a map, which shows that the Oreburgh Gym is just up over the big mountain ahead. Ash wants to climb over it right away, but Dawn would rather stay at the Pokémon Center just up ahead. Then Bonsly starts to cry, so Brock feeds it. Ash and Dawn are both surprised that Bonsly can eat solid food now. All of a sudden, a big column of wind erupts in the forest ahead of them. Ash and co. decide to check it out.

On the way to Oreburgh, Ash and his friends see Nurse Joy trying to help an injured Nuzleaf. Nuzleaf is too upset to accept her help, so Brock steps in to calm Nuzleaf down. With help from Bonsly, who Nuzleaf seems to think is a Grass-type Pokémon, Brock wins Nuzleaf's trust and treats its injuries. This Nuzleaf must be lost, since an old tree on the other side of the mountain is the only place in the area where Seedot, Nuzleaf, and Shiftry are found. Ash and his friends volunteer to get Nuzleaf back where it belongs.

Nurse Joy has found the injured Nuzleaf, which refuses to let her come close to it, attacking her with a Razor Wind attack. When Ash and friends get there, Brock protects Nurse Joy, and then goes gaga over her, but not for long. Croagunk hits Brock with a Poison Jab and drags him away. Nurse Joy explains that she found the Nuzleaf and tried to treat it, but it wouldn't let it. Brock persuades Nurse Joy to let him handle it. Brock approaches slowly, explaining as he goes. You must hide your hands and open your heart then approaching a Pokémon that feels threatened, than crouch to eye level. He also remembers that Nuzleaf like it when you blow on leaves to make a whistle sound. Brock offers Nuzleaf an Oran Berry, but it still is a little scared. Brock calls Bonsly out and asks it to have some of the Oran Berry, to show that it is safe. Not only does Nuzleaf take the Berry, it also makes great friends with Bonsly. So Brock gives Nuzleaf and Bonsly a whole bowl of Oran berries to share. Brock says they will get Nuzleaf back to its tree, so Nurse Joy can finish her work. She agrees, and heads back.
Team Rocket spies on the scene and decides Nuzleaf would be a great prize for the Boss. They show up with Meowth dressed as a Shiftry, hoping to trick Nuzleaf into coming with them. Their ploy is foiled, so they grab Bonsly and Nuzleaf. Brock tries to stop them and ends up getting carried away by Team Rocket too! That's no problem for Brock—Team Rocket lowers their guard after he cooks them a delicious meal, and Brock escapes with Nuzleaf and Bonsly. During the break-out, Bonsly even evolves into Sudowoodo!

Meanwhile, Team Rocket was eavesdropping on the Nuzleaf conversation, and conclude that it would be a great present for Giovanni. Meowth imagines how Giovanni is sitting on a grassy hill after work, watching the sunset. He says that he has all the money he ever wanted, but it still isn't enough. Then Nuzleaf comes, sits next to him, and starts to play his leaf whistle. This causes Giovanni to think about how great his new Nuzleaf is, and that "Meowth and Friends" should be given more money. This fantasy causes Team Rocket to become very happy, and Jessie and James to join in the fun.
Next Brock has to cross a river, but Sudowoodo dislikes water so Brock puts it in its Poké Ball. The problem is that without Sudowoodo, Nuzleaf gets upset! Brock has no choice but to bring out Sudowoodo and encourage it to be brave. Then Team Rocket catches up with Brock. Croagunk does its best but can't hold them off forever, so Sudowoodo pitches in to help fight. When Ash and Dawn arrive on the scene, Brock even tells them he and Sudowoodo can handle Team Rocket themselves! A real Shiftry shows up looking for Nuzleaf, and once Team Rocket is sent packing, our heroes can rest easy knowing that Nuzleaf will soon be back home.

On the journey to get Nuzleaf back to its tree, Nuzleaf and Bonsly are walking together. Dawn comments that they are just like old friends. Brock thinks it's because Nuzleaf thinks Bonsly's a Grass, with it really being a Rock. Then, Meowth, disguised as a Shiftry, jumps out, followed by a disguised Jessie and James. They claim that this is one of Nuzleaf's friends, and that it's been lost for 30 years! But their cover is blown when Dawn scans "Shiftry" with her Pokédex, revealing that it is actually a Meowth. But Meowth exclaims that Dawn's Pokédex must be broken, causing for their disguise to be ruined. Team Rocket states their usual motto, with Mime Jr. and Wobbuffet at the end. James fires a net launcher, trapping Bonsly and Nuzleaf inside. But Brock runs after the net and jumps on to it, which carries him away. Ash calls out Staravia to cut the rope with its wings, but Jessie sends out Seviper and, with a Haze attack, are able to escape with Brock tagging along.
Plot
During the night, a giant tree is shown, where the Seedot evolutionary line live. A Seedot falls down a branch and kicks a Nuzleaf off. It continues sleeping, landing on a Vileplume, running off into the forest. The next morning, the Vileplume continues running, emitting pollen and causing the Nuzleaf to sneeze, making the Vileplume run faster and dislodging Nuzleaf. It wakes up and realizes it is not at the tree. It tries to find its way back, running and falling off a cliff.

When they land in a grassy clearing, they tie Brock to a tree, but he protests in saying that they can't take Nuzleaf away from his home. But they just tease him and tell him to behave. He starts to think of how he can get Nuzleaf and Bonsly away from them. But he overhears them complaining about the scarcity of food that they have. He then tells Team Rocket that he can make them something out of that food. They ponder this for a moment, and then let him. When he's done, they feast on it, crying tears of joy as they scarf it down. But while they are eating, Brock sneaks away with the cage to a small clearing in the forest.
Meanwhile, Ash and ashfr continue on towards Oreburgh City, one giant mountain in the distance separating them from the city, but a Pokémon Center is at the foot of the mountain. Ash wants to keep going, but Dawn wants to rest at the Center. Brock cries, and as Brock is feeding him solid Pokémon food, everyone noticing how much Bonsly has grown. They notice a gust of wind nearby and rush to check it. A Nurse Joy tries to approach the Nuzleaf from earlier, but it attacks with Razor Leaf. Brock steps in to protect her, but his romantic advance results in another Poison Jab from Brock and being dragged. Nuzleaf attacks Ash and Dawn, but they avoid the attack as Dawn checks her Pokédex. Brock gets back up and mentions that Nuzleaf are generally afraid of humans, but he steps forward and hides his hands, approaching and getting down to eye level, keeping Nuzleaf calm. Brock pulls a leaf off a tree and blows on it like a whistle, calming Nuzleaf more. Brock hands it an Oran Berry, but it refuses. Brock brings out Bonsly and has it eat some of the Oran before offering it to Nuzleaf. Nuzleaf accepts it as Brock presents a whole plate full of Berries. Nurse Joy notices how Brock was able to calm the Pokémon as he uses a Super Potion on Nuzleaf's wound, healing it. Nurse Joy mentions that the thousand year old tree nearby houses the Seedot evolutionary family, the only area to spot the Seedot family in the vicinity. The group decides to take the Nuzleaf to the tree. TRT watches nearby, wanting to steal Nuzleaf, MTR visualizing another Boss fantasy about Giovanni having Nuzleaf.
Brock tells Bonsly to use Double-Edge on the cage. He does, and Brock tells him to do it again. Since Double Edge does damage to Bonsly as well, Bonsly gets hurt and begins to cry. Nuzleaf comforts it, and Brock motivates Bonsly into trying it one more time. It works. The cage breaks open and they are free. Bonsly is dancing around to celebrate, when suddenly he starts to glow white, and evolves into Brock! Meanwhile, Staravia reports negative when going to find Brock, so Ash and Dawn go where Team Rocket's balloon went down. Brock looks for Ash and Dawn, too.

Team Rocket is in their Meowth Balloon, furious that Brock left them. But Brock is about to cross a stream. Sudowoodo cowers a little, not liking water, so Brock puts it in its Poké Ball. This causes Nuzleaf to start crying because it doesn't want Sudowoodo to leave. So Brock calls it back out. Brock explains that Nuzleaf likes to have Sudowoodo around, so it will be courageous and cross the stream. He slowly steps from rock to rock, almost slipping a few times, but makes it to the final rock. But then Team Rocket comes, frightening Sudowoodo, who remains on the last rock, still not across. Team Rocket lands and Jessie calls Seviper out, with Brock getting Croagunk. Seviper uses Bite, which does nothing, so Croagunk knocks Seviper away with a Poison Jab. Seviper uses Poison Tail, but before it can hit, Croagunk uses Poison Sting, which hits, going past Seviper as well and destroying the Meowth Balloon. Ash and Dawn see the smoke from the explosion, and head that way. Back at the battle, Seviper comes back with Wrap. But after multiple Brick Breaks, Seviper is out. But, due to the Wrap, so is Croagunk.
As the group walks, Bonsly and Nuzleaf bond, as Nuzleaf believes Bonsly is also a Grass type. Meowth, disguised as a Shiftry, appears as well as a disguised Jessie and James. They say that "Shiftry" is also trying to find the tree and try to lure Nuzleaf over. However, Dawn checks her Pokédex and it identifies Meowth, which destroys the disguise, even more by Meowth's speech. Team Rocket removes the disguise and recites their motto. Their balloon comes up and they board, using a bazooka net to nab both Nuzleaf and Bonsly. Before they get away, Brock grabs the net as Ash calls out Staravia. Jessie's Seviper uses Haze to stop Staravia and Team Rocket gets away.

James sends out James, but Brock doesn't have a Pokémon. Carnivine uses Bullet Seed on Brock and Nuzleaf, which causes Nuzleaf to begin to cry and cower. Sudowoodo sees this, and overcomes his fear in order to protect Nuzleaf. He jumps to the shore, and even though he lands in the water, he gets right back out and goes to help Nuzleaf and Brock. He dodges Bite and then uses Double Edge, which hits directly. He uses Double Edge again, and then Sudowoodo uses Mimic on another one of Carnivine's Bullet Seeds. At this time, Ash and Dawn show up and offer to take over the battle, but Brock says no, since this is Sudowoodo's first battle. Then Carnivine quickly uses Bullet Seed, which hits. But Sudowoodo uses Double Edge, which hits. But then Carnivine uses Bite and latches on to Sudowoodo. But Sudowoodo knocks him off with Flail. Carnivine uses Bullet Seed again, which Sudowoodo dodges and then Mimics, knocking Carnivine out.
Team Rocket puts the Pokémon in a cage and bind Brock to a tree. Brock tries to find a way to get free as Team Rocket gets hungry, noting that the food they have is merely garnish, not a complete meal. Brock gets an idea and says that he can turn the food into a full meal. They release him and Brock makes a full course meal, Team Rocket diving in. They are so occupied by the food that Brock manages to slip away, taking the whole cage and darting away. When they get far enough, Brock has Bonsly try Double-Edge on the cage. He manages to bend a bar, but not enough, and Bonsly starts crying. Brock reassures his Pokémon and he tries again, this time breaking a bar and opening the cage. Bonsly dances happily but begins glowing as he evolves into Brock. Brock is happy as he salutes him.

Jessie and James are quickly sent out. Ash's Pikachu starts to help out, but before anyone can make a move, a large gust of wind comes, accompanied by a Shiftry. Meowth tries to persuade Shiftry that Ash and friends were trying to harm Nuzleaf. But while Shiftry is distracted, Team Rocket uses an extendo-hand to grab Nuzleaf and take him to their Wobbuffet hot - air balloon. But Shiftry uses a Razor Wind on the balloon to take it down, with Pikachu doing the big Thunderbolt to send them "blasting off again."
Meanwhile, Ash and Dawn continue to search for Brock, Staravia not finding anything. As they continue searching, Brock continues on, wondering how he'll manage to find Ash and Dawn, with Nuzleaf riding on top of Sudowoodo. They see the tree and continue on while Team Rocket flies in their balloon trying to find Brock after he slipped away. Brock runs into a fast-moving river and decides to cross. Knowing Sudowoodo hates water, he recalls him, but Nuzleaf crashes to the ground and starts crying. Brock brings Sudowoodo back out and tells him that Nuzleaf needs him. They start crossing, taking it slowly. Sudowoodo almost slips at one point, but Brock catches him. Just as they reach the end, Brock takes Nuzleaf off Sudowoodo as Team Rocket arrives nearby. Sudowoodo is paralyzed by fear as Jessie sends out Seviper and Brock sends out Croagunk. Seviper uses Bite, but Croagunk takes it without blinking. Effortlessly, he uses Poison Jab to send Seviper back. Seviper rushes forward with Poison Tail, but Croagunk's Poison Sting stops it, also hitting the balloon and causing an explosion, creating black smoke that Ash and Dawn spot, running towards it. Seviper uses Wrap on Croagunk, but he still manages to use Brick Break. While Seviper continues to Wrap, Croagunk repeats Brick Break multiple times, eventually dislodging Seviper and knocking it out. Brock congratulates Croagunk, but then notices him sitting there unresponsive, knocked out, as well, in a double knockout!

Nuzleaf is finally back in its tree with all its friends. As Sudowoodo, Brock, Ash, Dawn, and Pikachu wish them a safe life, Sudowoodo waves a fond farewell. Now Ash's gym battle is only a mountain climb away.
Brock recalls Croagunk as James sends James to attack with Bullet Seed. Brock shields Nuzleaf as Sudowoodo watches. He snaps out of fear and jumps to shore, getting wet, but not noticing. Sudowoodo steps up and dodges Carnivine's Bite before hitting with Double-Edge. Carnivine uses Bullet Seed but Sudowoodo uses Mimic to counter with Bullet Seed. Ash and Dawn arrive, noticing that Bonsly evolved. Ash wants to step in and battle, but Brock declines in that Sudowoodo can handle its first battle since evolving. Carnivine fires another Bullet Seed, Sudowoodo blocking and charging forward with another Double-Edge. Carnivine bites Sudowoodo and pins it to the ground, but Sudowoodo uses Flail to throw Carnivine off. Carnivine tries another Bullet Seed, but Sudowoodo dodges and uses Mimic to fire Bullet Seed and knock out Carnivine.

Team Rocket sends out Jessie and James. Ash decides to send Pikachu in, but a gust of wind overcomes the field as a real Shiftry appears. Meowth tries to convince Shiftry that Ash and his friends are the bad guys and they slip away while Shiftry advances. However, Team Rocket gets back in their balloon, now with a Wobbuffet design, and grabs Nuzleaf with a mecha arm. Shiftry uses Razor Wind to pop the balloon and free Nuzleaf. Shiftry saves Nuzleaf from the fall with a gust of wind. Ash has Pikachu use Thunderbolt to take down the Wobballoon for good. Nuzleaf returns to the tree as Ash and his friends continue on to Oreburgh City.

Meanwhile, Ash and his friends continue on towards Oreburgh City, one giant mountain in the distance separating them from the city, but a Pokémon Center is at the foot of the mountain. Ash wants to keep going, but Dawn wants to rest at the Center. Bonsly cries, and as Brock is feeding him solid Pokémon food, everyone noticing how much Bonsly has grown. They notice a gust of wind nearby and rush to check it. A Nurse Joy tries to approach the Nuzleaf from earlier, but it attacks with Razor Leaf. Brock steps in to protect her, but his romantic advance results in another Poison Jab from Croagunk and being dragged. Team Rocket watches nearby, wanting to steal Nuzleaf, Meowth visualizing another Boss fantasy about Giovanni having Nuzleaf.

Bonsly dances happily but begins glowing as he evolves into Sudowoodo. Brock is happy as he salutes him.

Brock recalls Croagunk as James sends Carnivine to attack with Bullet Seed.

Team Rocket sends out Dustox and Cacnea.

Trivia

Errors

 • In the scene in which Team Rocket is eating the food Brock made, when Wobbuffet eats the food from his fork, as soon as he eats it, another piece of food appears on his fork instantly, without Wobbuffet moving.
 • When Brock gives Nuzleaf the Oran Berries in a bowl, there were about 10-15 in the first shot, but in the shot after that, the Oran Berries shrink and multiply.
 • When Brock says "Bonsly, I want you to use Double-Edge on this cage", the closed captions say, "Bonsly, I want you to use Double-Edge on the cage."
 • In the English dub, when Meowth is lying to Shiftry about who attacked Nuzleaf, he claims Shiftry is the one who harmed Nuzleaf instead of Ash and his friends were the ones who did it.
 • In the Polish dub, the Pokédex says that Shiftry causes winds in excess of 100 kilometers per seconds, which is only the measurement unit changed without conversing it correctly from feet to kilometers.

Dub edits

 • When this episode aired in Japan, along with DP013, there was no opening or cold opening intro. It went straight to the episode after the previous episode finished. The English version (and later, the Japanese DVD release) includes a cold open intro showing a hungry Team Rocket, and Brock tied to a tree offering to cook their leftover ingredients for them.
 • In the Finnish dub, the title card is read by Dawn alone.
