Route 22 is a short east-west road located in western Kanto. In every Generation, the eastern terminus is at Viridian City. The western terminus, however, varies by Generation, making Route 22 one of only two routes (the other being Route 23) whose termini change over time. In Generation I and Generation III, the western terminus is at the Pokémon League building separating Route 22 from Route 23. In Generation II, the terminus is at the Pokémon League Reception Gate, which connects Route 22 to Route 26, Route 28 and Victory Road.

Route description

After departing Viridian, Route 22 turns south at a line of trees before circling around the bottom of the treeline and passing north through a grassy patch of wild Pokémon. North of the patch, the route turns west, passing over a small hill as well as a small pond. Route 22 then turns south, hopping over a ledge into another patch of grass. Six paces to the south, Route 22 returns west, then north, passing through a hole in the fence outside the checkpoint building. To the northeast, the road goes through a break in a ledge before entering the building, emerging as Route 23 on the north side.

The ledge over the western grass patch causes the route path from Viridian to the Pokémon League building to become a westbound-only path. To return east, a ledge lines the bottom of the route, providing a pathway for trainers to return to Viridian. The pathway, two paces wide, rejoins the route southwest of Viridian.

Blue makes two appearances on Route 22 near the first grass patch in Generation I and Generation III. The first battle is optional and affects what Pokémon become part of his team in Pokémon Yellow. The second battle is mandatory.

Differences among generations

Route 22 in Generation II.

Other than the differences in termini and structures at the western terminus, in Generation II, the route was shortened slightly.

Trivia

Interestingly enough, it is possible to capture very low-level Fearow around these areas in Generation II, similar to being capable of capturing Pidgeotto in Yellow Version in Viridian Forest.
