Z-A Battle Club is the player-vs-player format of Pokémon battles in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, accessed from the Link Play menu option. In this mode, four players simultaneously battle each other, akin to the Battle Royal format from Generation VII. Players are scored based on the number of Pokémon they knock out within the battle's 3-minute time limit.

Mechanics

In Z-A Battle Club, players compete with each other to score the most points. In all battles:

  • The player can only switch Pokémon up to three times. This limit is reset when one of their Pokémon is knocked out.
  • If a Pokémon is knocked out, its Trainer will go on timeout for a few seconds.
  • When a Pokémon faints, the opposing player that last dealt damage is awarded the point, including if the Pokémon is knocked out from self-inflicted damage (e.g. via Explosion or Life Orb).

Items

Items may randomly appear on the map that grant various perks to the first player that reaches them. The items are:

Stages

When the battle initiates, one of three possible venues is randomly selected:

Players use room passcode to join a battle and can choose from a set of battle rules. No rewards are earned from these battles.

Ranked Battles

Main article: Ranked Battles Seasons in Pokémon Legends: Z-A

In Ranked Battles, players compete with three other random players via the internet. Each player brings three Pokémon into their Battle Team, and can switch their active Pokémon three times. This limit is reset when one of the player's Pokémon is knocked out. When the player's Pokémon faints, the player will be returned to their starting point on the battlefield, and then reenter battle with all their Pokémon fully recovered. Battles have a time limit of three minutes.

All Ranked Battles follow a subset of Normal Rules. Each Season uses a custom ruleset that is season specific which may include lineup restrictions or limits on Mega Evolution or inclusion of specific Legendary or Mythical Pokémon.

Ranking

At the end of a battle, players are ranked from 1st to 4th based on the number of opposing Pokémon each Trainer defeated. Players are awarded 30 points for 1st place, 20 points for 2nd place and 10 points for 3rd place. Extra 10 points can be obtained by performing specific actions during battle:

  • Dealt first attack: the player who is the first to deal damage to an opposing Pokémon.
  • Dealt last attack: the player who is the last to deal damage to an opposing Pokémon.
  • First to Mega Evolve: the player who uses Mega Evolution first.
  • First to claim an item: the player who picks up an item first.
  • Scatter attacker: when the player has defeated at least one Pokémon belonging to each of their opponents.
  • Supereffective attacker: when the player has used moves that are supereffective five or more times.
  • Mega Evolution destroyer: when the player has defeated a Mega-Evolved Pokémon.
  • Most active attacker: the player who lands the most attacks.
  • Fresh opponent hunter: the player who attacks opposing Pokémon that are at full health the most number of times.
  • Mega-Evolving master: when the player defeats an opposing Pokémon with a Mega-Evolved Pokémon.
  • Flawless survivor: when the player completes the battle without a single Pokémon fainting.
  • [Number]-Pokémon defeater: granted based on the number of Pokémon the player defeated (10 points for each Pokémon)

Similar to the Z-A Royale, the player starts at Rank Z at the beginning of each season and can climb a ladder to Rank A. The player's rank will not decrease during the season.

Rewards

Players will earn battle rewards after each battle depending on their ranking, as listed below (from Version 1.02).

If the player ranks up, the player will also earn promotion rewards. At the end of a season, players will earn season rewards depending on their final ranking. The promotion and season rewads vary depending on the season.
