Rustboro City

Rustboro City

Rustboro City links Route 104 to the south, Route 116 to the east, and Route 115 to the north. Every building is constructed from stone, giving the city an old-fashioned appearance. It is the main hub of manufacturing in the Hoenn region, with the Devon Corporation as its beating heart.

Cutter's house

The house to the west of the Pokémon Center belongs to a man known as the Cutter. When the city was expanding, he taught his Pokémon a move to help clear the surrounding land of trees. He no longer needs his HM01 (Cut), and, recognizing you as a skilled Trainer, decides to pass it on to you. When used in the field, this move allows the user to remove small trees in order to reach new areas.

Pokémon Trainer's School

The Pokémon Trainer's School stands to the northeast of the Pokémon Center. Speak to the teacher to receive a Quick Claw, and brush up on the basics by reading the notes on the blackboard.

Devon Corporation

Devon Corporation is headquartered in a large stone building in the northwest part of town. The company is responsible for manufacturing many of the items Trainers rely on every day, including several variations of Poké Ball and medicine. Only authorized personnel are allowed past the first floor.

Time for a Trade

Visit the house in the northeast part of town to find a boy who would like to trade Pokémon. He is willing to part with his Makuhita in exchange for a Slakoth. Slakoth can be found nearby in Petalburg Woods. Makuhita arrives holding an X Attack.

Rustboro Gym

Rustboro Gym
Rustboro City Pokémon Gym
Leader: Roxanne

The Rock-Loving Honor Student

The Rustboro Gym specializes in Rock-type Pokémon. Rock-type moves are super effective against Bug-, Fire-, Flying-, and Ice-type Pokémon, while Rock-type Pokémon are weak to Fighting-, Grass-, Ground-, Steel-, and Water-type moves.

The Gym features a layout that presents Trainers with a choice: take the main path and defeat the two Gym Trainers, or forgo the prize money and experience rewards to challenge the Gym Leader directly.

Like most Rock-type Pokémon, both Roxanne's Geodude and Nosepass have high physical Defense. As special moves, Grass and Water attacks will target her Pokémon's weaker Special Defense instead, making for an easier battle. Fire-type Pokémon may struggle on their own, so Trainers who chose Torchic would be well-advised to bring the traded Makuhita, a Fighting-type Pokémon. Roxanne's Nosepass has the Sturdy Ability, which protects it from being knocked out with one hit. Chip away at its health with weaker moves before striking with super effective attacks.

After the battle, Roxanne awards you the Stone Badge, which boosts a Pokémon’s physical Attack by 10% during battle and enables the use of Cut in the field. She also gives you TM39 (Rock Tomb) as a prize.

Stop, Thief!

When you leave the Gym, you witness a Grunt from Team MagmaR/Team AquaS escaping from the Devon Corporation building. That same Devon researcher from earlier is close behind, and chases the thief northward. He loses track of him in the northeast, where the city connects to Route 116. Recognizing you from Petalburg Woods, he explains that the Grunt just robbed him of some valuable Devon Goods, and begs for your help.

Route 116

Route 116

Route 116 runs east from Rustboro City. It is a path that many workers take on their daily commute to Rusturf Tunnel and back.

Kidnapped!

When you reach the entrance to Rusturf Tunnel, you find an elderly man standing there. It seems that the thief has added kidnapping to his list of charges, as he has also made off with the man's beloved Wingull, Peeko!

Rusturf Tunnel

Rusturf Tunnel

Rusturf Tunnel was a construction project by Devon Corporation that aimed to link Rustboro City and western Hoenn to the rest of the region. The tunnel was nearly complete when Devon's president, Mr. Stone, realized that the work was disturbing the local Whismur population. The project was canceled, though only a small bit of debris, easily cleared, remained to hinder travel.

The Take Down

The tunnel is fairly small, so you will find the thief and his hostage shortly after you step inside. Unfortunately for him, his escape route is blocked by rocky debris. Defeat him, and he gives up the Devon Goods before fleeing. The old man rushes in to check on Peeko, and introduces himself as Mr. Briney before the pair leaves for his home near Petalburg Woods.

The Returning Hero

With the Devon Goods reclaimed, return to the Devon researcher in the northeast part of the city. As thanks for your help, he gives you a Great Ball before accompanying you to Devon Corporation to meet his boss.

A New Task

The man leads you to the president's office on the third floor. He asks if you would deliver the Devon Goods to Slateport City's shipyard, as he is afraid of the thief returning. He leaves you for a moment, and soon returns to say that the president would like to speak with you.

Devon's President, Mr. Stone

The company president introduces himself as Mr. Stone, and thanks you for reclaiming the stolen goods. Having heard that you will be delivering the package to Slateport City, he wonders if you could stop off in Dewford Town on the way. He gives you a Letter addressed to a man named Steven, and hopes that you could deliver it for him. He does not expect you to work for free, of course, and rewards you with a PokéNav. This high-tech device has several different functions.

PokéNav
Map Displays a map of the Hoenn region, including the user's current location. Zooming in on a town or city shows its basic layout.
Condition Shows the five conditionsCool, Beauty, Cute, Smart, and Tough—of each Pokémon, on which they are judged during a Pokémon Contest.
Trainer's Eyes Records limited data on up to 69 different Trainers that were previously battled that hints at their preferred Pokémon and strategy.
After obtaining five Badges, also alerts the user when any would like a rematch.
Ribbons Displays the Ribbons that each Pokémon has earned, whether through Pokémon Contests or special events.
Initially disabled; unlocked after any of the user's Pokémon earn their first Ribbon.

In order to reach Dewford Town to the south, you must first find a way to cross the sea.

Meet Up with May/Brendan

As you reach the southern entrance to the city, you run into May/Brendan. Speak to your friend, and she/he mentions passing Mr. Briney in Petalburg Woods.
