Template talk:E
Documentation
To use this template properly, type {{e|(energy type)}}
, where (energy type) is one of the eleven TCG Energy types (Colorless, Fighting, Fire, Grass, Lightning, Psychic, Water, Darkness, Metal, Dragon, Fairy), Rainbow Energy, or None. This will create the desired energy icon.
Edit Request, Rainbow Energy
It isnt noted in the intro that the Rainbow Energy can also be used with this template. Vuvuzela2010 Δ 12:32, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
Template... broken?
The template appears to be broken. --The Truth aka Relicant 10:17, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
- Yeah, it looks like I changed the template in such a way that it wouldn't work if used in tables, but was perfectly fine otherwise. A very minor change fixed it. --SnorlaxMonster 10:51, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
Link to Type (TCG) pages instead of Basic Energy pages
I believe this template ought to link to pages under Type (TCG), such as Grass (TCG), as opposed to Energy cards, such as Basic Grass Energy (TCG). Some issues with the current implementation:
- This template is used throughout infoboxes and tables for Pokémon, such as when listing a card's type, weakness, and resistance. For these uses, the Type (TCG) pages would be more appropriate and informative, as they provide better context about the characteristics of Pokémon cards based on typing. Additionally, some Pokémon use attacks with Energy requirements that do not match their listed type, and linking to Energy cards may be misleading to players unfamiliar with the game's mechanics.
- While the current implementation may seem to make more sense for attacks used by Pokémon, there are some instances where it can be misleading. For instance, Murkrow (Neo Genesis 24)'s attacks link to Basic Darkness Energy, but this is anachronistic, as that Energy card did not exist until years after the Neo expansions rotated. I don't think the basic Energy card pages are providing better context than the Type (TCG) pages would.
- The current implementation links to a category for Colorless and nothing for Dragon. Linking to these icons to Colorless (TCG) and Dragon (TCG) respectively would make this template's behavior more consistent across types and more useful in these instances.
Rainbow Energy should remain an exception, as that icon is only used in reference to Energy cards' Energy provision. I'm not really a fan of linking that concept to a single card that isn't currently in rotation, but I don't have an alternative to offer for that. --Apopheniac (talk) 18:12, 9 July 2024 (UTC)
- Funny thing. I was trying to make an equivalent version of this for type pages, but my version isn't working very well. User:Salmancer/epoke template draft My plan was just using this template for anything that calls for Pokémon, such as Weakness, and keeping the current template for things that call for Energy. I think I'd rather stick to that, because as currently written, the type pages barely address Energy. I'm certain the single sentence "The corresponding Basic Energy card is Grass Energy." has no benefit if you wanted to know what that symbol in the cost of that attack means, and as of now you'd be better off on the Basic Energy page. Those pages do say what one needs at that exact juncture, being to the effect of "this card is used to meet costs in attacks that use this symbol".
- A rewrite of all the type pages would be better, and if that happened then this template would be better off linking to them instead of cards... but technically I should be making Pika Party so I'm not up for actually doing that.
- While I'm a usual schemantics person, I think an anchronism isn't really a problem. Unlimited is a (nominal) format so in one sense linking to Basic Darkness for a card that predates its introduction works exactly as intended, since the game doesn't especially care about which card is providing the Energy.
- Rainbow Energy has a fairly simple solution: give that set of cards a section of Special Energy card since the mechanics of "provides every type of Energy" is a constant among the TCG. Salmancer (talk) 19:02, 9 July 2024 (UTC)
- Most of the current usage of the template right now is in reference to Pokémon types, which I feel should take precedence over Energy types. A separate template with a different link is likely going to be confusing for most users and would need thousands and thousands of pages to be updated in order to be used correctly, which I'm not counting on happening.
- For navigation purposes, the basic Energy pages don't link directly back to the Type (TCG) pages, whereas the Type (TCG) pages link to their corresponding basic Energy. I don't think the type pages are in particular need of a significant rewrite, though if we wanted to expand more on Energy for those pages to coincide with reworking this template, I wouldn't be opposed.
- I suppose the Rainbow Energy icon could link to Energy cards that provide more than one type of Energy, though that's kind of tautological. I don't know if there's a good way to split the list on Energy card, since many of those cards provide Colorless Energy in some circumstances. --Apopheniac (talk) 19:33, 9 July 2024 (UTC)
- Aren't most calls for "{{e}}" in templates? The easy answer would be to change every extant use of "{{e}}" to link to Pokémon, then go back around and have a bot run through the card pages, specifically modifying the line "|cost=*" seen in the lines of the "Cardtext/Attack" template to link to cards. That gets most of the way across, and I think regex could track the remainder since they should universally start with "{{e|" and end with "Energy".
- And why split the list in half? Just a proper explanation of what the cards are, why they are used, and an image showing a stock "every energy card" should be more than sufficient. Salmancer (talk) 11:28, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
