Not sure if this has been said before, but in season1, Episode59 of the Anime (after Ash's defeat at the cinnebar gym), brock says "There are plenty of other pokémon gyms that're out there, ash. And none of them hang over volcano pits." confirming that there are more then 8 gyms (about 4 minutes into the ep) | |||
