Bianca leads Cheren through Route 2 when suddenly, a wild Audino jumps out at her. She sends Oshawott to battle, but it is quickly defeated, to her dismay. While Bianca laments her loss, Cheren pulls her away to continue trying to catch up to Black.

The two soon arrive in Striaton City. Cheren approaches a shopkeeper and asks if she has seen Black, mimicking his usual shout. She points him toward a restaurant, and he and Bianca look through the window to see Black sitting with White alongside their Tepig. Bianca is angered that Black would be on a date while the two have been searching for him, but Cheren points out that does not appear to be the situation. When White leaves with her Tepig, Bianca tries to follow her, prompting Cheren to pull her into the restaurant so they can speak with Black. They approach him, and Bianca angrily asks who the girl sitting next to him was, leading Black to explain that he now works for her talent agency.

Watching from nearby, Cilan, Cress, and Chili note that Black continues to get into arguments with their other customers. Chili suggests throwing him out, but Cilan and Cress point out that he made a reservation for a full-course service. The three send out Pansear, Pansage, and Panpour, who prepare tea for Black and his friends. While Cheren and Bianca marvel at the taste of the tea, Black rises from his chair and announces this is the signal that a Gym battle is now starting. Cress then pulls down on a cord, causing two curtains to part and reveal a stage with floor buttons representing the Fire, Water, and Grass types; behind the buttons is another curtain with a drop of water displayed on it.

It is revealed to the others that the restaurant is actually the Striaton Gym, and Black is tasked with pressing the button with the Pokémon type that has the advantage over the type being displayed on the curtain. Seeing the droplet symbol, Black goes to press the Grass button, but before he can, Bianca jumps onto the Fire button. Angered at Bianca for interrupting his Gym challenge and potentially getting him disqualified, Black has Tep grab her purse and pull her away. This, in turn, provokes Bianca to have her Oshawott attack Tep.

As the two continue to bicker, Cheren points out that Black was the one to open the box containing their new Pokémon without waiting for them, which led to the destruction of their Pokédexes. Cheren yells at Black that he and Bianca were also excited to start their Pokémon journeys, but they had to be put aside to clean up the mess he made. He urges Black to consider the feelings of others, and finally delivers Professor Juniper's warning to keep his Pokédex safe, as it is the only working one.

On a nearby screen, Chili's face appears. He announces that Black is disqualified for having someone else participate during his test. As Black reels from shock, Chili laughs and says he was only joking. Pointing out that Bianca does not understand anything about type compatibility, he suggests that the three team up and take on all of the Striaton Gym Leaders together.

After taking a brief pause, Black turns to Bianca to demonstrate type compatibility while using their Pokémon. He has both Tep and Cheren's Snivy use attacks on Oshawott, showing that Snivy's is more effective than Tep's. Now knowing the answer to the Gym Leaders' challenge, Bianca confidently steps on the Grass button, allowing them to pass through the curtain. After they do so, they are presented with another curtain that shows a symbol of a flame. Bianca then has Oshawott use a Water-type move on Tep and Snivy. Noticing how Tep is more affected than the latter, she steps on the Water button to advance to the next stage. As the three continue to work together, they arrive at the platform where the Gym Leaders stand. Everyone shares introductions, and the battle begins.
