Release information
Neo Series
Metal Energy was included in the Neo Genesis expansion with artwork by Milky Isobe, first released in Japan in the Gold, Silver, to a New World... expansion. The set symbol on the English print is gray instead of white. It was reprinted in the Chikorita Side Deck of the Japanese Intro Pack Neo.
VS and e-Card Series
Metal Energy was reprinted in the Japanese-exclusive Pokémon VS expansion with a new card layout. It received its first English reprint in the Expedition Base Set using this layout and a slightly different effect that only reduces damage from attacks. Unlike all other cards in the e-Card Series, the Expedition prints of Metal and Darkness Energy lack e-Reader card IDs, making their VS prints the closest Japanese equivalents. It was later reprinted in the Aquapolis expansion with the original Neo Genesis card text, previously released in The Town on No Map expansion.
EX Series
At the beginning of the EX Series, Metal Energy was reprinted with the newly introduced card layout in the EX Ruby & Sapphire expansion, first released in the Japanese Mudkip Constructed Starter Deck. The card text was altered again, so that non-Metal-type Pokémon do not receive the additional effect instead of dealing 10 less damage. This card was also awarded as a prize to those who attended the Pokémon e-League throughout January 2004. The standard prize is a Cosmos Holographic version of the EX Ruby & Sapphire print, and winner versions have a "Winner" stamp in the bottom right corner of the artwork. Jumbo versions of the winner prints were also distributed as prizes. In Japan, a promotional print of this card was given away during the Gym Challenge Spring 2005. This card was reprinted in the EX Emerald expansion, previously reprinted in the Side Deck of the Japanese Master Kit. Later reprints were included in the EX Unseen Forces, EX Delta Species, and EX Holon Phantoms, with the latter originating from the Lucario Quarter Deck of the Japanese Gift Box Mew • Lucario. This print of Metal Energy was finally reprinted in the EX Power Keepers expansion, later released in Japan in the World Champions Pack.
Diamond & Pearl Series
A new print featuring artwork by Takumi Akabane was included in the Mysterious Treasures expansion, first released in the Japanese Secret of the Lakes expansion. It was later reprinted in the Secret Wonders expansion, previously reprinted in Japan in the Shining Darkness expansion. Another reprint was included in the English Majestic Dawn expansion.
Platinum Series
Metal Energy's Diamond & Pearl Series artwork was reprinted in the English Rising Rivals expansion and the Japanese Bonds to the End of Time and Beat of the Frontier expansions.
HeartGold & SoulSilver Series and Call of Legends
Metal Energy received new artwork by Kent Kanetsuna in the Undaunted expansion, first released in the Japanese Reviving Legends expansion and Steelix Constructed Standard Deck. A Crosshatch Holo version of this print was the League Promo during the February 2011 Block Smash Season of the 2010-2011 Pokémon League cycle. It was reprinted in the Call of Legends expansion.

Rulings
Errata was issued for this card's Expedition print to use its Neo Genesis effect.
Trivia
- Though both it and Darkness Energy represented a type that was eventually as prevalent as the other seven TCG types, only four of this Energy could be included in a deck. This was a major hindrance to the inclusion of Pokémon of these two types in decks until Diamond & Pearl introduced a basic form of this card.
Origin
Metal Energy was introduced to provide Energy for Pokémon of the newly-introduced Metal type, which consisted of all Steel-type Pokémon from the games.
