Project Piplup (Japanese: プロジェクトポッチャマ Project Pochama) was a marketing campaign launched by The Pokémon Company that focused on the titular Pokémon, Piplup, as marketing for the global releases of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl and Pokémon Legends Arceus. The campaign lasted from March 9, 2021 to March 1, 2022.[1][2] It is the second such campaign to be launched by The Pokémon Company, after Project Eevee and would be followed up by Project Snorlax in 2024.
On April 14, 2021, the official Project Piplup Twitter account celebrated reaching over 100,000 followers.[3] The Official Project Piplup website launched on April 30, 2021.[4]
Events
Sticker Gift Campaign

From April 5, 2021 to May 9, 2021, a special promotional campaign was held at Pokémon Centers located in Japan. Visitors who showed proof of following the official Project Piplup Twitter or Instagram would receive a special promotional glossy sticker featuring the project's logo.[5] Only one sticker could be received per person.
Piplup's "Cheer-Up" Visit
Piplup's "Cheer-Up" Visit (Japanese: ポッチャマの“おうえん“訪問 Pochama's "Cheer-Up" Visit) was a special service where companies could request a visit from a Cheerleader Piplup Pokémon Meet and Greet Mascot. Companies could privately request either a physical or virtual visit during the application period of April 05, 2021 to April 19, 2021.[6] Once the application period was over, a select group of companies were chosen for Piplup to visit.[7]

"Playtime with Piplup!" Shorts
The (Japanese:ポッチャマとポチャつきたい I want to play with Piplup!) shorts were a series of shorts featuring the Meet and Greet Piplup. These shorts were initially posted on the official Project Piplup social media platforms before being released as a compilation video on the Official JP Pokémon Youtube channel.

Pokémon postbox
On July 7, 2021, three special Pokémon postboxes were unveiled in Yokohama City.[8] Amongst these post boxes, a special Piplup Post Box was placed in front of the Yokohama Sakuragi Post Office.[9]. This postbox is set to be demolished later on June 30, 2026[10]
Studio Alice
On July 02, 2021, Studio Alice, the baby photo-shoot company, unveiled a new photo background and baby outfit based on Piplup.[11]
Pikachu Sweets by Pokémon Cafe
As a promotion with the Project Piplup campaign, Pikachu Sweets by Pokémon Cafe renamed itself to "Piplup Sweets" (Japanese: ポッチャマスイーツ Pochama Sweets)[12] This special event lasted from August 21, 2021 to September 30, 2021. Several decorations at the cafe were changed to feature Piplup as well.[13]
The promotion also two new items to the menu: the Yogurt Foamy Frappe (Japanese: ポッチャマスイーツのあわあわフラッペ〜ヨーグルト味 Pochama Sweets: Foamy Frappe - Yogurt Flavor) and the Round Salted Vanilla Ice-Cream Sandwich (Japanese: ポッチャマスイーツのまんまるアイスサンド〜塩バニラ味 Piplup Sweets: Round Ice Cream Sandwich — Salted Vanilla Flavor).[14] Additionally, the classic menu item, the Get Latte, decorated with new Piplup foam art designs.
Additionally, Sunshine City, the host city of Pikachu Sweets, hosted a stamp rally for Piplup Sweets.[12] Guests would receive smartphone wallpapers as participation prizes, and upon completion of the stamp rally would receive a logo sticker for Piplup Sweets.
Social Media Campaigns
#GetPiplupAndFriends Campaign
The #GetPiplupAndFriends Campaign (Japanese: #ポッチャマと仲間たちをゲットしよう) was a promotional giveaway celebrating the one month anniversary of the launch of Project Piplup.[15] From April 09, 2021 to April 15, 2021, participants who retweeted and followed the official Project Piplup Twitter account would be entered into a giveaway where 15 participants would be eligible to receive a set of four Pokémon Center original plushies of Turtwig, Chimchar, Piplup, and Empoleon.[16]
#PiplupToday Support Campaign
On May 11, 2021, a Retweet Campaign was held on the Official Project Piplup Twitter account. Participants were tasked with reaching 10k RTs on this tweet in order to receive special SMS icons starring Piplup.[17] The goal was announced to be successful the following day.[18]
#PiplupSpotlight Giveaway
As part of a social media campaign on Instagram, a special giveaway was held.[19] Participants would enter by following the official Project Piplup Instagram account and making a post with the hashtag #PiplupSpotlight. 10 entrants would have a chance to win a limited-edition bean plush cushion.[20][21]
Piplup Instagram LIVE
On June 25, 2021, a Instagram Live was held featuring the Piplup Meet and Greet mascot.[22]

Piplup Step

Piplup Step is a song made for Project Piplup in collaboration with D.League.[23] It was released as a live-action music video, a choreography music video and later an animated music video on the official Japanese YouTube channel. The song and lyrics are free to download from the Project Piplup promotional site.[24]

It'll be fine!

It'll be fine! is a song and music video made for Project Piplup featuring Dawn's Piplup. It is a medley of four Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl ending theme songs: By Your Side ~Hikari's Theme~, Surely Tomorrow, In Your Heart, LaLaLa, and Message of the Wind, in order of appearance. The song is sung by Dawn's Japanese voice actress, Megumi Toyoguchi.

Animation
Pokémon the Series

On July 2, 2021, it was announced that Dawn and her Piplup would make their return to the series in Pokémon Journeys for two special episodes, Nightfall? Nightmares! and A Midsummer Night's Light!.[25] The episodes, which go went on air in Japan later that month on July 23rd and 30th, with the international release debuting on Netflix on January 21, 2022. These episodes feature a story showcasing the Lunar duo legendaries Cresselia and Darkrai.
In the press release, Megumi Toyoguchi (Dawn's Japanese VA) stated that she was "quite nervous playing Dawn again after such a long time", but during the recording she stated that she "really enjoyed interacting with her partner Piplup, and it helped me to feel relaxed and enjoy playing the character again."[26]
Cozy up with Piplup
Cozy up with Piplup (Japanese:ポッチャマのいる部屋) is a stop-motion animation short featuring a Piplup plush that comes to life and wanders around a room.[27] It released on Youtube on June 10, 2021. Cozy up with piplup also received a behind-the-scenes video showcasing the making of the stop-motion animation.

The Competitive Piplup and the Stubborn Novelist

(Japanese: 負けず嫌いなポッチャマとがんこな小説家 The Competitive Pochama and the Stubborn Novelist) is a Pokémon manga written by 森もり子 Moriko Mori and illustrated by トミムラコタ Cota Tomimura. It was published weekly on the official Project Piplup X (Twitter) account from August 25 to October 27, 2021.
Piplup and the Bag of Beginnings

Piplup Everyday (LINE)
On October 22, 2021, The Pokémon Company released a new pack of LINE stickers in Japan that feature the Piplup, as part of Project Piplup.[43] The pack of stickers was avaliable for purchase for 250 yen, with the set includes a total of 40 stickers.
