The Plain Badge (Japanese: レギュラーバッジ Regular Badge) is the badge awarded by the Goldenrod Gym in Johto. It is usually the third of the Johto Badges a Trainer earns. It is given by Whitney, the Gym Leader.

In the core series

The Plain Badge cannot be acquired until after the Hive Badge, due to the path through Ilex Forest being blocked by a tree that must be Cut. When the player defeats Whitney, she will throw a temper tantrum and refuse to award the badge; they must then talk to Lass BridgeGSC/CathyHGSS in the Gym and speak to Whitney again to receive the Plain Badge.

Obtaining the Plain Badge has several effects that can differ among games.

  • Strength can be used outside of battle to move boulders.
  • A woman in the Goldenrod City Flower Shop will acknowledge the player's strength and give them the Squirt Bottle.
  • GSC: the power of Normal-type moves is boosted by 12.5%. (Does not apply to Link Battles.)
  • GSC: the Speed of the player's Pokémon is boosted by 12.5%. (Does not apply to Link Battles.)
