The terminology of Pokémon Storage System explains how terms such as "Pokémon Storage System" and "Pokémon Box" have been used in Pokémon media.

In the core series games

Pokémon Storage System

From Generation I to III, this is often displayed as POKéMON Storage System.

In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, there are some variations in its name and capitalization:

• POKéMON Storage System (PC dialogue)
• STORAGE SYSTEM (without the word "Pokémon", said by Bill)
• POKéMON PC storage system (said by Mr. Pokémon)
• PC POKéMON storage system (said by Bill's sister)
• POKéMON STORAGE SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION SERVICE (a feature accessible by calling Bill's phone number)

In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, in addition to being often displayed as POKéMON Storage System, this is also written as POKéMON storage system once when said by a non-player character in the Petalburg City Pokémon Center.

From Generation IV onwards, this is often displayed as Pokémon Storage System. As an exception, Bill says Pokémon Storage system (with the last word uncapitalized) during a phone call in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.

In Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, this is displayed once as (lowercase) storage system:

• "My buddy Bill developed the basic storage system. I tinkered with it here and there to make it easier for me to use." (Bebe)

In Pokémon Sword and Shield, this is named Pokémon storage system according to the Adventure Guide and the description of the Pokémon Box Link.

In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Scarlet, and Violet, the term "Pokémon Storage System" (or its variations) is not mentioned anywhere, except the "Pokémon storage system" in the unused description of the Pokémon Box Link found in the game data.

Pokémon Box

In Generation I, this is usually displayed as POKéMON BOX (Japanese: ポケモン ボックス) or shortened to BOX (Japanese: ボックス), except the abbreviation ^P_K^M_N BOX is used once. Some examples:

• "There's no more room for POKéMON! The POKéMON BOX is full and can't accept any more! Change the BOX at a POKéMON CENTER!" (when attempting to catch Pokémon with a full Box)
• "Choose a ^P_K^M_N BOX." (as seen on the page listing Pokémon Boxes)

In Generation II, this is usually displayed as PC BOX (Japanese: パソコンのボックス) or shortened to BOX (Japanese: ボックス). Some examples:

• "That last POKéMON you sent filled your BOX up. You'll have to switch BOXES if you want to catch more POKéMON." (Bill's phone call in Generation II)
• "Congratulations! We have a match with the ID number of <number> in your PC BOX." (Lucky Number Show)
• "Uh-oh... Both your party and your PC BOX are full. You have no room to put the bug POKéMON you catch. Please make room in your party or your PC BOX, then come see me." (when attempting to enter the National Park while the party and current Box are full)
• "You can also print out stuff like MAIL and your PC BOXES." (mentioned by the child seen playing a Game Boy in the National Park)

In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, this is usually displayed as BOX (Japanese: ボックス), except these are also used once each: STORAGE BOX and PC BOX. However, in the Japanese version, those uses of "STORAGE BOX" and "PC BOX" are simply displayed as 「ボックス」 as well.

• "Deposit in which BOX?" (PC dialogue)
• "Let’s say you have six POKéMON. If you catch another one... It is automatically sent to a STORAGE BOX over a PC connection." (Lanette)
• "Excuse me! Your PC BOX is full." (when attempting to enter the Safari Zone with a full Box)

In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, this is usually displayed as BOX (Japanese: ボックス), except POKéMON BOX is used twice (once as singular and once as plural), and PC BOX is used once. However, in the Japanese version, those uses of "POKéMON BOX" and "PC BOX" are simply displayed as 「ボックス」 as well. Some examples:

• "If a POKéMON BOX on the PC gets full, just switch to another BOX." (Bug Catcher Greg on Route 3)
• "There’s no more room for POKéMON! The POKéMON BOXES are full and can't accept any more!" (when attempting to catch a Pokémon while the party and Boxes are full)
• "Excuse me! Your PC BOX is full." (when attempting to enter the Safari Zone while the party and Boxes are full)

From Generation IV onwards, this is often referred to as Box (Japanese: ボックス), and sometimes as Pokémon Box or PC Box.

Default name for a Pokémon Box

In Generation I, each Box has a short name and a long name:

• The short name has a five-character limit: "BOX 1", "BOX 2", "BOX 3", and so on, except "BOX10", "BOX11", and "BOX12" have no space before the number. This is the format used by the list of all Boxes in the "Change Box" feature.
  • In Japanese, the eight Boxes are known as 「ボックス1」, 「ボックス2」, etc. on this list of Boxes, with a five-character limit as well.
• The long name has a nine-character limit: "BOX No. 1", "BOX No. 2", "BOX No. 3", and so on, except "BOX No.10", "BOX No.11", and "BOX No.12" have no space before the number. This is the format used to show the name of the current Box in the Pokémon Storage System.
  • In Japanese, the current Box is written instead as 「いまのボックス 1」 (Now Box 1), 「いまのボックス 2」 (Now Box 2), etc., with a nine-character limit as well.

The feature to rename Boxes was introduced in Generation II. From Generation II to VI, each one is consistently known by default as "BOX 1", "BOX 2", "BOX 3", including spaces in all names such a "BOX 10", "BOX 11", etc. From Generation VII onwards, they are known by default as "Box 1", "Box 2", "Box 3", etc. except in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, they are known as "Pasture 1", "Pasture 2", etc.

PC-boxed

The adjective PC-boxed is used in the Pokémon Lottery Corner:

• "Congratulations! The ID number of your PC-boxed <Pokémon> matches your LOTO TICKET’s number!" (Pokémon Lottery Corner in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal)
• "Congratulations! The ID No. of your PC-boxed <Pokémon> matches your Loto Ticket number!" (Pokémon Lottery Corner in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, as well as Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver)

Box away

In Generation IV, the verb "box away" is used in the Pal Park dialogue:

• "Done! Your Pokémon have been boxed away. You’ll now have to save the game."

In the list of Pokémon owned by the main characters at the end of volume 14, there is a small section "Other members" (Japanese: Box member(ボックスメンバー)) listing the Pokémon currently in Boxes.
