James's Mareanie (Japanese: コジロウのヒドイデ Kojirō's Hidoide) was the first Pokémon that James caught in the Alola region.

History

James and Mareanie

James caught Mareanie in SM012, after he noticed that the Brutal Star Pokémon had taken a liking towards him. Mareanie first encountered James when he was wearing a scuba diving helmet resembling a Corsola, its prey. It latched onto his helmet, mistaking it for a real Corsola, causing it to crack and flood with water. After James reunited with Team Rocket, they looked it up. Jessie thought it was cute initially, but changed her mind once it slapped her with one of its ten spiked tentacles. Jessie then told James to catch it and pushed him towards it, making it latch onto his head and inject him with poison. When Mareanie came off, it became smitten with James when what just happened made James resemble a Mareanie as well. It started chasing him for a bit until Ash accidentally found Team Rocket. Jessie's Mimikyu wasted no time attacking Pikachu with Shadow Ball due to its intense grudge over the Mouse Pokémon. During Jessie's battle with Ash, Mareanie heard James say that this was their chance to get Pikachu, so it launch a Spike Cannon towards Pikachu. Meowth said Mareanie wanted to fight alongside James. Later, James called for another Spike Cannon towards Rowlet and Mareanie finished it off with Sludge Bomb, poisoning the Grass Quill Pokémon. Mareanie launched another Sludge Bomb at Pikachu, creating a smokescreen for Mimikyu to strike down with Shadow Claw. Excited that they just might win for once, Mimikyu was about to launch one final attack. Right before the move could hit, Bewear suddenly appeared from the water and took Team Rocket away with it. After being dropped off at Bewear's home, James asked Mareanie to join his team, which it accepted. After catching it, James called it back out, and it affectionately latched onto his head, making him look like a Mareanie once more.

Personality and characteristics

Mareanie is very fond of James and occasionally engulfs its Trainer's head in its ten spiked tentacles. The resulting poisoning causes James to look like a Mareanie. Mareanie has an attraction to James's appearance in this state, one of the reasons it decided to join him.
