The Itemfinder (Japanese: ダウジングマシン Dowsing Machine) is a class of items used to detect hidden items in the vicinity of the user. There are many different kinds of itemfinders that vary between canons.
In the games
A form of Itemfinder has been present in every main series game since Pokémon Red and Blue. In these games (and Yellow), the Itemfinder is given out by one Professor Oak's aides in the lookout on Route 11 if the player has 30 or more Pokémon caught in their Pokédex. It is a key item.
The Itemfinder in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal is similar to that of Generation I. As with other key items in Generation II (and following), the Itemfinder can be set to the Select button and easily accessed. It is given out by a man in Ecruteak City.
In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, it can be found on Route 110. It appeared in a very similar capacity to its predecessors.

In A Ghost of a Chance, James buys an item called "Treasure Detector", obviously based on the in-game item Itemfinder. He attempted to find some treasures at the Burned Tower.
In Try for the Family Stone! James used his Itemfinder again to find a Dusk Stone.
In the manga
In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Red uses an Itemfinder to locate the hidden HM for Surf.
In the TCG
The Item Finder in the TCG series is a Trainer card that allows the user to retrieve a Trainer card from their own discard pile and put it into their hand. Two other cards (besides the Itemfinder itself) must be discarded to do so, however.
