Ash's Primeape (Japanese: サトシのオコリザル Satoshi's Okorizaru) was the eighth Pokémon caught by Ash Ketchum during his travels through Kanto. Its voice actor in both English and Japanese is 大竹宏 Hiroshi Ōtake, however, Michael Haigney provided its English voice in The Punchy Pokémon.

History

Ash caught Primeape on Route 7 in the episode Primeape Goes Bananas. On the road to Celadon City, Ash learned that Gary had already captured 30 Pokémon. Upon hearing this, Ash aspired to capture more for himself.

Soon afterwards, a friendly wild Mankey ate some of Brock's food. Ash took this opportunity to try to capture the little Pokémon, but the Poké Ball failed, and Mankey was angered. It chased the group, beat up Ash, and stole Ash's hat. Mankey gleefully teased Ash as the young trainer fumed about having his beloved cap stolen.

Team Rocket took this opportunity to try to capture Pikachu, knocking Mankey aside. The angry Pig Monkey evolved into Primeape, which viciously attacked the Team Rocket members. After several attempts to capture the berserking Primeape, Ash's Charmander was finally able to defeat it. Ash captured it and unleashed it upon Team Rocket.

In The Punchy Pokémon, after leaving Celadon City, Ash and his friends met a man named Anthony who was training to win the P1 Grand Prix, a tournament for Template:Type2 Pokémon. Anthony's daughter, Rebecca, wanted him to stop spending so much time away from home training. Brock and Ash volunteered to enter the tournament to discourage Anthony. Ash entered Primeape.

In the first match, Ash saved Primeape from a nasty fall, which caused the usually angry Pokémon to become closer to Ash. Primeape eventually won the tournament. Anthony asked to train Primeape, so Ash gave it to him.

Primeape was only around for a couple of episodes, but it had a lot of personality. It was very mischievous, and would often fly into uncontrollable tantrums if it did not get what it wanted. This notably caused Ash to audibly reconsider using Primeape in a gym battle against Erika. Despite this, it was given away after only five episodes and only appeared in the episode it was captured and the episode it was given away in.

Trivia

  • Primeape shares some similarites with another of Ash's primate Pokémon, Aipom. Both evolved while not owned by him - Primeape in the wild and Ambipom with Dawn. Both of these Pokémon have also annoyed Ash by stealing his hat.
  • This is Ash's second Pokémon that refused to obey him. The first was Pikachu and the third would eventually be Charizard, who, ironically, was the Pokémon that defeated Primeape when Ash captured it.
  • This was the first Pokémon that took Ash's hat.
  • Primeape was the first Template:Type2 Pokémon caught by Ash, as well as the only pure Fighting-type owned by a main character so far in the anime.
  • Primeape is the only one of Ash's Pokémon that evolved prior to its capture in the same episode.
