Florian meeting Carmine and Kieran during the Festival of Masks

The Festival of Masks (Japanese: オモテ祭り Mask festival) is a special event that occurs in Kitakami, beginning at night. It had existed for many years, but following the defeat of Okidogi, Munkidori, and Fezandipiti by Ogerpon, the festival was altered to honor the Loyal Three's sacrifices.

History

The villagers of Kitakami had held the festival for generations, during which they wore masks of many different Pokémon. These masks depicted Pokémon such as Hoothoot, Squirtle, Lapras, Weezing, and others. The masks were carved by an unnamed mask maker, the ancestor of the siblings Carmine and Kieran. One day, a man and an ogre traveled to the land of Kitakami. When they arrived at the village, the villagers refused to allow the duo to enter, as the villagers were scared of the two's appearance.

One day, the man and ogre returned to join the village festivals, now wearing masks that concealed their true identities. These masks soon attracted the attention of a trio of greedy Pokémon. This trio snuck into the home of the man and the ogre, the Dreaded Den, and stole the Wellspring Mask, Hearthflame Mask, and Cornerstone Mask from them, with the man only able to save the Teal Mask.

After learning what had occurred, the ogre returned to the village and slew the trio. As the villagers were unaware of the trio's theft, they assumed the ogre was a villain and the trio had perished protecting the village. To honor what they believed were the sacrifices of the Pokémon, now known as the Loyal Three, the villagers incorporated the story into the festival's tradition, and began wearing masks depicting Ogerpon, Okidogi, Munkidori, Fezandipiti, Eevee, and Pikachu. During the following years, Ogerpon participated in the festivals, but now alone.

Many years later, the descendants of the mask maker, Carmine, Kieran, and their grandparents live in Mossui Town and participate the festivals in the present day, even though Kieran has his doubts about the masked ogre truly being a bad guy in the legend. The player soon arrives in Kitakami for a school trip from Naranja AcademyS/Uva AcademyV with three other students and Briar to explore and learn about the new land and participate the next festival with the two siblings.
