Ledges are a common feature of the geography of the Pokémon world. They can be found on most routes where they serve as a one-way obstacle: the player can jump down the ledge but is never able to climb back up. Generally, they are designed to make returning from an area easier than getting there - removing the need to walk through tall grass in one direction or providing a quick route back to the start from the innermost part of a cave. They may also be used to prevent a player from entering an area too early, such as Route 46 in Johto.
In Hoenn, Trainers with an Acro Bike can use it to hop up ledges.
