The Captured King (Japanese: 囚われの王を救え) was a villain event in Pokémon Masters EX. It tied into the first part of the Unova chapter of the Villain Arc, featuring battles against Team Plasma. It was one of the Unova villain events, the other being Team Plasma's Icy Malice.

During this event, players could earn vouchers from battles against Team Plasma that could be redeemed in the shop for rewards, including Legendary Spirits that could be used to raise Ghetsis & Kyurem to 6★ EX. Obtaining 2,000 vouchers would reward players with a medal. All battles could be challenged an unlimited number of times except Daily Extreme Battle 1, which could only be challenged once per day.

This event featured the Battle Challenge, where players were challenged to defeat a team of strong opponents. Players could complete event missions by clearing these areas with teams using various theme skills, earning medals and other rewards.

All sync pairs with the Unova theme skill received a bonus to their Attack, Defense, Sp. Atk and Sp. Def stats when used for this event, with the amount of the bonus varying between areas.

First run

The event first ran from October 31 to December 3, 2022. The "Sygna Suit Hilda Poké Fair Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Sygna Suit Hilda & Victini for the duration of the event, and the "Sygna Suit Hilbert Poké Fair Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Sygna Suit Hilbert & Genesect beginning on November 2, 2022 and lasting until the end of the event. In addition, Ghetsis & Kyurem received their EX style in conjunction with this event.

In this run, players could earn Bug-themed Event Vouchers H from battles. Event missions rewarded players with Gems and Battle Points for completing any of these battles a certain number of times, and the Battle Challenge mission rewards included a Strike and a Tech Move Candy Coin.

Additionally, the music and artwork on the title screen were different than usual. From October 31 to November 14, 2022, the title screen artwork depicted Sygna Suit Hilda & Victini, Sygna Suit Hilbert & Genesect, Hugh, N, and Ghetsis, and the background music wasBattle! (Ghetsis) (Pokémon Masters EX Version). From November 14 to December 3, 2022, N was changed to be wearing his sygna suit, Black Kyurem was added, and the background music wasDecisive Battle! (N) (Pokémon Masters EX Version). For this entire duration, a special voice-over line of a Trainer saying "Pokémon Masters EX" would play as soon as the game's logo appeared on the title screen. This line could be spoken by Hilbert, Hilda, N, or Hugh, chosen at random each time the title screen was loaded.

Second run

The event reran from October 22 to November 3, 2023. The "Triple Feature Poké Fair Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Sygna Suit Hilda & Victini, Sygna Suit Hilbert & Genesect, and Sygna Suit N & Kyurem from the beginning of the event to November 12, 2023.

In this run, players could earn Dragon-themed Event Vouchers O from battles, and the amount of vouchers received as completion rewards was increased drastically. In addition, the mission rewards were changed to only award Gems and medals.

If the player had already raised Ghetsis & Kyurem to 6★ EX, they could not do anything with his custom Legendary Spirits; so, an exchange was included in the shop to revert the Legendary Spirits back into Event Vouchers O. Performing this exchange counted as obtaining more Event Vouchers O for the purposes of Mission 7.

Third run

The event reran again from April 5 to 17, 2024. The "Triple Feature Poké Fair Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Sygna Suit Hilda & Victini, Sygna Suit May & Blaziken, and Sygna Suit Red & Charizard for the duration of the event. All three of these sync pairs received unlockable EX roles in conjunction with this scout.

In this run, players could earn Event Vouchers X from battles. In addition, Mission 11 now required players to complete the second-round Battle Challenge with no sync pairs fainting. Everything else was the same as the previous run.
