Leaping Toward the Dream! (Japanese: レッツゴー！プロジェクト・ミュウ！！ Let's Go! Project Mew!!) is the 71st episode of Pokémon Journeys: The Series, and the 1,156th episode of the Pokémon anime. It first aired in Japan on June 18, 2021, in Canada on November 13, 2021, in South Africa on January 4, 2022, in the United Kingdom on January 10, 2022, and in the United States on January 21, 2022.

Blurb

Goh’s request to try out for the Project Mew research team has been accepted! He and Ash travel to Mt. Coronet in the Sinnoh region, where Project Mew member Danika explains Goh’s first task—catch an Alolan Ninetales who’s stuck on the mountain! Our heroes soon realize it won’t be easy, because when they find Ninetales, the typically tranquil Pokémon is angry. It uses Blizzard, and Quillon of Project Mew has to rescue Goh and Ash. Eventually, Goh gets Ninetales to calm down, and he catches it so Project Mew can return it to Alola. Having passed the test, Goh is now an official challenger to join Project Mew!

Plot

Goh has received an email summoning him to Mount Coronet in the Sinnoh region for his first Project Mew mission, following the recommendation from Professor Oak. Ash decides to tag along to cheer for Goh, so they both immediately travel to Sinnoh. They arrive at Project Mew's laboratory at the foot of Mount Coronet, although it doesn't really look like a laboratory to them. While approaching it, they notice Gary, who greets them and teases Goh a bit about him having decided to join the team after all despite his initial resistance. He also warns him about the project's difficulty before leaving, with Goh seething with annoyance towards him.

When Ash and Goh enter the base, they're greeted by a man, who asks for their help in carrying some heavy boxes to a room full of books. The man says that each of these books is about Mew, but the more he finds out about it, the more mysterious it gets. He introduces himself as Amaranth, the leader of Project Mew, before handing Ash and Goh over to another member of the team, a young woman named Danika.

Taking them to a different room, Danika goes on to explain the details of Project Mew. Their objective is to search Mew from Table Mountain, the largest mountain in the world in terms of surface area, located on a certain island. The expedition there will be carried out during the one-week transitional period from wet season to dry season, after which a thick fog will cover the area and make exploration impossible. Goh tries to ask questions regarding Mew, but Danika makes it clear that all the detailed information they have about Mew is confidential. She then goes on to explain the membership requirements: any Trainer wishing to join must pass certain Trial Missions assigned for them, testing out their knowledge, Pokémon catching skills, and capability of working with other Trainers, among other things. For passing a Trial Mission, the challenger will receive a token on their Rotom Phone. The challengers with the most tokens by the time the testing period ends will be accepted into the Mew search team as Chasers, with three spots in the team of five still remaining open. Goh realizes that Danika must be a Chaser too, which she confirms, mentioning that a person named Quillon is the other already accepted Chaser. Ash asks if he can come along for Goh's mission, which Danika permits, given teamwork's importance in the project.

Danika then reveals that the base is actually airborne, currently flying towards an ice field up Mount Coronet, where Goh's mission will be to catch an Alolan Ninetales. Once they land, Danika says they have six hours to complete the mission, before Ash and Goh head out. They call out some of their Pokémon to help in the search, but most of them eventually return empty-handed and shivering from the cold, so they're recalled. Goh's last Pokémon, Scizor, however, manages to find Ninetales and calls Ash and Goh to it. As soon as Ninetales spots them, it attacks them on sight. Goh is confused by this aggressive behavior, since his Pokédex had described Ninetales having a tranquil personality. He decides to battle Ninetales and calls for Scizor to use Metal Claw, but the move misses and Ninetales freezes Scizor solid with Ice Beam. Ninetales then starts whipping up a vicious Blizzard, forcing Goh to hurriedly recall Scizor as Ninetales disappears into the howling wind and he and Ash desperately try to shield themselves.

Ash and Goh come to in a sheltered cave, having been saved by a young man with a Weavile. He calls them weaklings and tells them to leave as soon as the blizzard ends. He snaps at Goh that he's disqualified and if it weren't for him, he, Ash, and their Pokémon would've just died. Goh recognizes the young man as Quillon, the Project Mew member mentioned by Danika. Goh asks Quillon why Alolan Ninetales is here in the first place. Quillon explains that it was stolen from its home by Pokémon hunters, but their plane crashed while they were transporting it, causing it to get away and wind up here. This also explains why it's so distrustful towards humans. Goh's objective is to catch Ninetales so that it can be returned to its home on Mount Lanakila.

Once the weather clears, Quillon tells Ash and Goh to leave, but Goh protests, noting that the time limit isn't over yet. He's also figured out something: since Ninetales originally lived on Mount Lanakila, it might want to live somewhere that looks like its former home, such as a nearby mountain peak. Quillon follows Ash and Goh there, where they indeed find Ninetales. They try to convince Ninetales to let them catch it so they can take it back home, but it remains hostile towards them. As such, Goh is forced to battle it, calling out his Cinderace and telling it to use Quick Attack, which gets countered by Ninetales's Dazzling Gleam. Cinderace next goes for a Blaze Kick, while Ninetales sets up an Aurora Veil to protect itself. Goh tells Cinderace to power through with Pyro Ball, which, despite being weakened by the defensive barrier, still hits Ninetales.

However, just as Goh throws a Poké Ball at Ninetales to catch it, an Ice Beam hits the ball and freezes it. The Ice Beam turns out to have been used by a Regice, which breaks out of a nearby wall of ice. Quillon mentions that Regice in an important Pokémon for studying the origins of Pokémon as a whole. Ash tells Goh to handle Ninetales while he battles Regice. Goh approaches Ninetales without any of his Pokémon to appear less threatening, once again trying to convince it that he only wants to catch it to return it home. Ninetales sets up another Aurora Veil around itself, but Goh presses against the barrier, swearing that they're going to return Ninetales back to its home on Mount Lanakila. Eventually, Ninetales calms down and lowers its barrier, showing Goh that it now trusts him. As such, Goh then pulls out a Poké Ball and catches Ninetales.

Meanwhile, Ash and Pikachu are not faring well against Regice, so Quillon takes over. As Regice starts charging for a Hyper Beam, Quillon calls out his Single Strike Style Urshifu, a Pokémon that Ash has never seen before, so he checks it out with his Rotom Phone. Before Regice's Hyper Beam can go off, Quillon commands Urshifu to use Wicked Blow, striking the Iceberg Pokémon hard enough to send it smashing back into the wall of ice from which it had emerged. Quillon tells Regice to behave itself until he comes back for it, before heading back to base with Ash and Goh.

Back at the base, Ash and Goh warm themselves back up. Danika enters and says she's verified the Alolan Ninetales, and thanks the two for saving it. She then reveals that the mission they just cleared was, in fact, not a Trial Mission, but a mission to see if Goh was qualified to be an official Project Mew challenger. Now that he is, he's eligible to take on actual Trial Missions, regardless of what Quillon had told him earlier about him being disqualified. Ash understands that this is what Gary's earlier warning about the project's difficulty had meant.

Amaranth also enters the room, congratulating Goh and talking with Quillon about Regice's appearance. Goh asks Amaranth if he truly believes that Regice is connected to the origins of Pokémon, which he confirms. When Goh asks if it is connected to Mew, Amaranth asks him and Ash if they've ever thought of what Pokémon actually are and where they came from. He believes that Mew, the ancestor of all Pokémon, could hold the key to solving those questions, revealing that solving this ultimate mystery is the ultimate goal of Project Mew. Goh is now even more pumped up to be a member, and as they head back to the base of Mount Coronet, Amaranth invites him and Ash to come look at the data collected about Regice with him.
