Walkthrough:Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire/Part 1
These pages follow the original Game Boy Advance iteration, not Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. The guide for those games can be found here.
Introduction
After a brief cutscene, press the A Button or Start on the title screen to reach the main menu. Option may be used to change settings like Text Speed. Select New Game and press the A Button. The resident researcher of the Hoenn region, Professor Birch, appears and introduces new Trainers to the Pokémon world. Next, the player is prompted to select their avatar's gender. The opposite-gender counterpart becomes Birch's child and the player's rival, May or Brendan. Finally, a name must be assigned from a list of preset options, which differs between versions.
| Default Names | |
|---|---|
| Pokémon Ruby | Male: Landon, Terry, Seth, Tom Female: Terra, Kimmy, Nicola, Sara |
| Pokémon Sapphire | Male: Sean, Terry, Seth, Tom Female: Marina, Kimmy, Nicola, Sara |
To use a different name, move the cursor to New Name and press the A Button. On this screen, pressing the A Button will select a letter while pressing the B Button or selecting Back will delete the previous one. A custom name may be up to seven characters long. Pressing Select cycles through three pages of alphanumeric text and symbols. When ready, select OK in the bottom-right corner. With that done, the player is transported into the world of Pokémon to begin their adventure!
Littleroot Town

The journey begins in Littleroot Town, in the southwest part of the Hoenn mainland. It is a rather small, sleepy town with only three buildings; your home, Professor Birch's home, and the professor's Pokémon Laboratory, where he conducts research on Pokémon distribution, in the south. The north end of town leads to Route 101.

A New Beginning
The game begins in the back of a moving truck, as your family has just moved here from the far-off Johto region. Now that you can control your character, the various buttons and their effects are as follows:
| Input | Effect(s) |
|---|---|
| +Control Pad | Moves character; moves cursor in a menu |
| A Button | Interact with people and the environment; select menu options |
| B Button | Cancel a selection; exit a menu |
| Start | Opens the main menu |
| Select | Reorganize items in the Bag |
Hop out of the truck to meet Mom and step inside your new home.

Head upstairs to check out your room and set the clock. After doing so, Mom tells you that the movers have finished their work, and to make sure that everything for your desk is here. The desk holds a notebook with adventure rules, and a PC in the corner.
The PC acts as your item storage. Since each pocket on your Bag can only hold 20 different items, it would be necessary to use or discard some before obtaining anything new. The PC can hold up to 50 different items. Withdraw Item and Deposit Item allow for moving items between inventory and storage, while Toss Item discards an item permanently. There is also a Mailbox function to store pieces of Mail, as well as a Decoration option.
To save the game, press Start to open the main menu, select Save, and then Yes. When the menu disappears, your progress is saved and it is safe to exit the game.

Return to the first floor and Mom excitedly calls you over to the TV, as the current program just aired a segment about the Petalburg Gym, where your father is the new Gym Leader. She then suggests visiting his friend, your new neighbor, Professor Birch.
Birch's house
Visit the house next door to meet Professor Birch's wife, then go upstairs to meet their child, May/Brendan. The young Pokémon Trainer is happy to meet you, but leaves suddenly a moment later after remembering that Birch asked for help in catching a Pokémon.
Route 101

Route 101 is a short path that connects Littleroot Town to Oldale Town in the north. The route features several patches of tall grass, a favorite hiding place of wild Pokémon.

Save the Professor!
When you first reach the area, you find Professor Birch being chased around by a wild Poochyena! His Bag has fallen out of his reach, and he pleads with you for help. Choose one of the three Pokémon from the Poké Balls inside the professor's Bag, and use it to scare off his attacker.

- The Grass-type Treecko does well against Water-, Rock-, and Ground-type Pokémon. It also has the most weaknesses of the trio, and fares poorly against Fire-, Flying-, Bug-, Poison-, and Ice-type attacks. It is the most well-rounded of the trio.
- The Fire-type Torchic is great when battling Grass-, Bug-, Ice-, and Steel-type Pokémon, but is vulnerable to Water-, Rock-, and Ground-type moves. As it grows, it gains a secondary Fighting type. Torchic may struggle early on, making it better suited for those looking for a challenge.
- The Water-type Mudkip has an advantage when facing Fire-, Rock-, and Ground-type Pokémon, but may struggle against Grass- and Electric-type attacks. As it grows, it gains a secondary Ground type. Mudkip's typing gives it an easier time in the early part of the game, making it a good choice for less experienced Trainers.
Once the wild Poochyena is defeated, Birch invites you back to the Lab.
Littleroot Town
Birch's Lab
As thanks for rescuing him, Birch happily lets you keep the young Pokémon. He gives you a chance to nickname your first partner Pokémon, then encourages you to visit May/Brendan on Route 103 for tips on how to be a Pokémon Trainer. When your Pokémon needs a rest, head back home and speak to Mom at any time to have her restore it to full health.
Oldale Town

Oldale Town is a small town located between Route 101 to the south, Route 102 to the west, and Route 103 to the north. It is where the contrast between colorful flowers and deep, verdant forests is most beautiful.

Pokémon Center
The first building you will see is the Pokémon Center. This Pokémon hospital will heal your team to full health and eliminate any status ailments they may have. Each facility also has a PC for Trainers to use, where they can access their Pokémon storage and item storage. As Trainers may only carry six Pokémon with them at once, any others are immediately transferred to storage upon capture. It is a good idea to heal up and save your progress whenever you find a Pokémon Center.
Poké Mart
Speak to the clerk wearing an apron near the southeast house. He leads you to the local Poké Mart in the northeast part of town, and explains everything that these shops have to offer. These stores offer a variety of Poké Balls, Potions, and other items. It is helpful to stock up on supplies whenever possible, as there is no telling what you may run into on your journey. He even gives out a Potion as a free sample.

Rare Footprints?!
The western exit is currently blocked off by a Super Nerd who believes that he may have found some rare Pokémon tracks. Afraid of someone carelessly damaging them, he refuses to let anyone pass by until he has made a sketch of his discovery.
Route 103 (West)

Route 103 connects Oldale Town in the southwest and Route 110 in the east. Seawater divides the route, restricting travel to the western side for now.

Rival Battle 1
Cross through the tall grass to meet up with May/Brendan, who challenges you to a friendly battle after spotting your new Pokémon.
When battling, each Trainer sends out at least one Pokémon at a time; both of these particular Pokémon are on Level 5, indicated by the Lv:5 aside each Pokémon. Below that is the health bar, which shows the Pokémon's remaining HP. A battle is won or lost when either side has no remaining Pokémon with the strength to continue.
Choosing Fight will allow you to launch an attack against the target. Each of these first partner Pokémon have two moves. The first will damage the opponent, and the other will lower one of its stats. If your Pokémon's HP runs low, be sure to use a healing item, like a Potion. Go to Bag to select the medicine and apply it to the Pokémon.
Having witnessed your ability as a Trainer, May/Brendan is not surprised that Professor Birch has taken an interest in you. She/He then turns to leave, jumping down the ledges on the way southward to Birch's lab.
Oldale Town
Heading Home
May/Brendan is waiting for you near Oldale Town's south exit. When you approach, she/he excitedly sets off again toward Littleroot Town.
Littleroot Town
Birch's Lab
When you return to Birch's lab, he congratulates you on defeating May/Brendan on your first try. He explains that his child has been helping with his research for a long time, and she/he already has an extensive history as a Trainer. Birch then reveals a device that he had ordered for his research, but decides to give to you instead: the Pokédex. This handheld device is a high-tech encyclopedia that records data on every Pokémon you encounter, and will be complete when you catch a member of every species. May/Brendan is thrilled to see you get your own Pokédex just like her/him, and gives you five Poké Balls to start you on your journey.
Run Like the Wind
As you go to leave Littleroot Town again, Mom is waiting outside for you. Realizing that you are headed out on an adventure, she suggests wearing the pair of Running Shoes that she brought for you. With these Running Shoes on, holding the B Button allows you to move at twice the speed as walking. Mom says that Dad will be overjoyed that you have your very own Pokémon, but asks that you be careful. She reminds you that you can come home to visit anytime before heading back inside, leaving you free to begin your journey.
Oldale Town
“Rare” Footprints
By the time you return to Oldale Town, the west exit is no longer blocked. The Super Nerd who was sketching what he believed to be rare Pokémon footprints can be found in the center of town, and sheepishly admits that they were his own.
