Ash immediately called Professor Araragi to which she sent him Mijumaru's Poké Ball. In BW005, during the decisive match for his first badge in Sanyou Gym, Ash uses Mijumaru in a battle against Dent and his Dent. At first, Mijumaru was afraid of Yanappu, but with some encouragement from Ash and Pikachu, he decided to battle. Throughout the match, Mijumaru was unable to hit Yanappu with his Water Gun, and starts flailing around when he is being hit by Bullet Seed. He then becomes petrified with fear when Yanappu started charging a SolarBeam. Continuing in BW006, he deflects the SolarBeam with his keratin shell, and subsequently Bullet Seed. At one point he drops his shell and was prevented from picking it up as Yanappu continued firing Bullet Seed between himself and its shell. Ash asks him to aim his Water Gun at a wall, and trusting his trainer, he does so and recovers his shell. He then used Shell Blade to defeat Yanappu, winning the battle and earning Ash the Tri Badge.

In BW007, Mijumaru was sent out in a battle against a wild Tsutarja. As it was a male, he became infatuated when hit by Tsutarja's Attract, as was thus eventually recalled.

Ash's Mijumaru (Japanese: サトシのミジュマル Satoshi's Mijumaru) is the second Pokémon that Ash caught in the Isshu region.

History

Mijumaru originally belonged to Professor Araragi, as one of the three starter Pokémon a new Pokémon Trainer could choose. Ash called him cute when he was sent out in BW001, when Shooti had to decide between the three starters. He then became extremely shocked when Shooti chose Tsutarja. Soon after, he started taking interest in Ash, observing him but staying out of sight, and to the point that he left Professor Araragi's lab to follow him.

Eventually, Mijumaru expressed interest in traveling with Ash and convinced Ash to take him along on his journey in BW003. Ash only realized that it was Professor Araragi's Mijumaru when he failed to capture it in a new Poké Ball, and had to obtain a worried Professor Araragi's approval to allow Mijumaru to travel with him and to request for Mijumaru's Poké Ball.

Mijumaru, like some of Ash's previous Pokémon, had constantly sought attention from Ash. In BW003 when he wanted to travel with Ash, he jealously knocked Pikachu off Ash's shoulders and pretended that he was as close as Ash was to Pikachu. Then, when Ash was at the Pokémon Battle Club in BW004 battling another trainer, he came out of its Poké Ball, even though Ash had already clearly chosen Pikachu. However, he promptly changed his mind to battle when he realized that his opponent was Futachimaru, a Pokémon of his own evolved form.

Mijumaru has a sea-shell shaped appendage on its belly that can be detached and used to battle, and occasionally throwing, as it did in BW002 when he popped Team Rocket's balloon, thereby saving Pikachu and Iris' Kibago from captivity. Mijumaru's shell made is made of keratin, and being light but strong, it is capable of deflecting attacks, prominently shown when he deflected Yanappu's Bullet Seed and ultimately SolarBeam in BW006. During that decisive match for the Tri Badge, he subsequently used its shell in a Shell Blade attack to defeat Dent's Yanappu, earning Ash a victory.

Mijumaru was revealed to be male when it battled a wild Tsutarja that would be caught by Ash in BW007. He became infatuated when hit by the Grass Pokémon's Attract, and was eventually recalled.

Trivia

  • Mijumaru's capture was first revealed in a short preview aired after DP190, featuring all the Isshu starters.
  • Similar to Aipom and Gible, he followed Ash behind his back and debuted few episodes earlier than his official capture.
  • Mijumaru is the first starter Pokémon that Ash has captured first in his region that isn't the region's Template:Type2 starter.
    • He is also the first starter Pokémon, other than Pikachu, Ash has obtained that was previously owned by the regional professor.
  • Like Ash's first Water-type starter Pokémon, Squirtle, Mijumaru wanted to be captured and was not battled.
  • Mijumaru seems to share a common trait with both Bayleef and Aipom, as all wanted Ash's full attention, and were jealous of the bond Pikachu has with Ash.
    • Unlike the others, Mijumaru is male, as revealed in BW007.
