This page lists all the different in-battle mechanics that differ between localizations or games within the same generation, potentially causing issues in link battles.

Generation I

Generation II

  • Present: In Pokémon Gold and Silver, Present replaces a number of values in the damage formula with values from other, unrelated sources. Also, Present only inflicts a quarter of the normal damage against Rock-type and Steel-type Pokémon. In Pokémon Crystal and Pokémon Stadium 2, Present uses the regular damage formula properties and inflicts half of the normal damage against Rock-type and Steel-type Pokémon. In link battles involving Gold or Silver, the formula from Gold and Silver is always used.
  • Stat rollover: In Pokémon Gold and Silver, if the Thick Club, Light Ball, or Metal Powder would allow a Pokémon's stat to exceed 1024, it will be treated as that value modulo 1024 during damage calculation. In Pokémon Crystal and Pokémon Stadium 2, this does not occur. In link battles involving Gold or Silver, the formula from Gold and Silver is always used.

Generation III

  • Deoxys: Deoxys has a different form in each Generation III game while in the wild (although it will be in Normal Forme in the wild). In link battles, Deoxys always appears as Normal Forme to opponents, but uses the correct stats.
  • Trick: Mail can be swapped by Trick in Japanese Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, but not in all other Generation III games. In link battles, it is unknown what happens.
  • Nightmare: In Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire (but not other Generation III games), if a Pokémon cures itself of sleep with Shed Skin, the effect of Nightmare remain even after waking up. In link battles, it is unknown what happens.

Generation IV

  • Slow Start: In the Japanese versions of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, removing Slow Start does not undo the Attack and Speed drop; it must still wait five turns. This was changed in localized versions as well as in Pokémon Platinum. In link battles, it is unknown what happens.
  • Hypnosis: In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, Hypnosis's accuracy was changed to 70%. In Pokémon Platinum, it was changed back to 60%. In link battles between Diamond and Pearl and other versions, the accuracy is set to 60%.
  • Protect/Detect: In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, if an attack is given perfect accuracy through the effect of a move (Lock-On/Mind Reader), the weather (Thunder in rain, or Blizzard in hail), a Micle Berry, or an Ability (No Guard), it has a chance to hit through Protect or Detect equal to (100 - move accuracy)%. OHKO moves are unaffected, and will never hit through Protect or Detect. In link battles, it is unknown what happens.
  • New forms and Griseous Orb: In Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Rotom, Shaymin and Giratina have new forms.
    • In Generation IV, Rotom changes back to its normal form when taken into the Union Room or Wi-Fi Club, or when deposited in the Day Care.
    • In Generation IV, the Griseous Orb can only be held by Giratina. The item returns to the Bag when held by a Pokémon taken into the Union Room or Wi-Fi Club. In link battles, it appears as Altered Forme Giratina to Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, but still uses the correct stats and Ability.
    • In Generation IV, it is unknown what happens to Sky Forme Shaymin.
  • New Poké Balls: In HeartGold and SoulSilver, the Apricorn Poké Balls are regular items that do not exist in previous games. These items cannot be held. Pokémon caught in these Poké Balls are displayed as being in regular Poké Balls in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.
  • Acid rain: In Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver, if a Pokémon is knocked out by Pursuit while switching during weather (except rain) or specific other field effects, the weather will become a glitch combination known as acid rain. In link battles between Diamond or Pearl and Platinum, HeartGold or SoulSilver, this occurs if the user of Pursuit is the host (regardless of which game is the host).
  • Spiky-eared Pichu: Spiky-eared Pichu is a variant of Pikachu exclusive to Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. The player cannot enter the Union Room if Spiky-eared Pichu is in their party. In link battles, it appears as a regular Pichu to Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.

Generation V

  • Poison Touch: Poison Touch has a 20% chance of poisoning in Japanese versions of Pokémon Black and White. This was changed in localized versions as well as in Black 2 and White 2. In a link battle including a Japanese version of Pokémon Black or White and a non-Japanese version or Pokémon Black 2 or White 2, the chance to poison is determined by the game of the player with the Pokémon with the Ability Poison Touch.
  • New forms: In Black 2 and White 2, Kyurem, the Forces of Nature and Keldeo have new forms.
    • White Kyurem and Black Kyurem cannot traded. In link battles, it appears as regular Kyurem to Pokémon Black and White, but still uses the correct stats and Ability.
    • In Generation V, the Forces of Nature cannot be traded while in their Therian Formes. In link battles, they appear in their Incarnate Forme to Pokémon Black and White, but still uses the correct stats and Ability.
    • In Generation V, it is unknown what happens with Keldeo in trades and link battles.

Generation VI

Pokémon X and Y will never be matched with Pokémon Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire in Battle Spot.

  • New Mega Stones and colored orbs: In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, there are a number of new Mega Stones as well as colored orbs becoming held items, corresponding to new Mega Evolutions and Primal Reversions. A Pokémon holding one of these items cannot be traded from Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire to Pokémon X and Y; Pokémon holding these items cannot be used. Pokémon holding any Mega Stone or colored orb cannot be Wonder Traded. If a Pokémon Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire game battles a Pokémon X or Y game, Pokémon holding these items cannot be used; X and Y will never be matched with Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire in Battle Spot.
  • New moves: Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire introduced the new moves Origin Pulse, Precipice Blades, Dragon Ascent, and Hyperspace Fury. A Pokémon knowing any of these moves cannot be traded from Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire to Pokémon X and Y (Wonder Trade will ensure it is never traded to a Pokémon X or Y game), and if a Pokémon in Pokémon Bank knows the move it cannot be withdrawn in Pokémon X and Y. If a Pokémon Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire game battles a Pokémon X or Y game, Pokémon that know these moves cannot be used.
  • Cosplay Pikachu: Cosplay Pikachu is a variant of Pikachu exclusive to Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Cosplay Pikachu cannot be deposited in Pokémon Bank. Cosplay Pikachu cannot be traded from Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire to Pokémon X and Y, and cannot be traded at all via Wonder Trade or the Global Trade System. If a Pokémon Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire game battles a Pokémon X or Y game, Cosplay Pikachu cannot be used.
