Talk:Mass Outbreak event

Move
I would suggest moving this page and either turning it into a disambig or redirecting to Poké Portal News and throwing a hat note on that page. For the simple reason that I think most people looking up this term will be looking for events in the core series over the event in TCG Pocket, and we should make navigating to the page the term most frequently relates to a priority. 4iamking 10:05, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
- Due to the similarity of the name pages, I'd personally support appending "(TCG Pocket)" to this page's name, and adding a hatnote to Mass outbreak, for sure. Cipher (talk) 15:26, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
- I had wanted to move it, though when I asked on Discord last week Storm Aurora didn't think the TCGP page needed a dabtag, so I left it. I would be fine with moving this page and making it either a redirect or a disambig. -- Apopheniac (talk) 18:15, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah redirect or disambig sounds good to me. Landfish7 19:22, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- Not to be a party pooper, but I didn't think it needed a dabtag last week and I still don't think it needs a dabtag now. I disagree that it's more likely people looking up this term are looking for SV events than TCGP events. As of September 30, 2024, SV has sold 25.69 million units, while TCGP has surpassed 30 million downloads as of November 8, 2024. Combined with the fact that TCGP released much more recently, I think TCGP has more active users right now. So it seems perfectly reasonable to me that people searching for "mass outbreak event" are more likely to be looking for the TCGP event type. Storm Aurora (talk) 22:30, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- For one thing, it is not a good idea to estimate the number of users solely with total units sold/download counts. For example, many of them are not English-speaking and are not expected to look up "Mass Outbreak event" (in English) at all. For another, the usage of the term itself needs to be considered. At this point of time, there are some 20 Mass Outbreak events held in SV, while there is only one in TCG Pocket, and it is not even clear whether Mass Outbreak events are going to be an event type or just a one-off usage. I would say that the term "mass outbreak event" is much more well-established as an SV event rather than as a TCG Pocket event now. ネイ (talk) 15:29, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- I think we can all agree that this isn't a case where >90% of searches will be for one thing, and only a small minority for the other. We can surely argue either way regarding which medium is going to gain more importance (and hence searches) over the next months/years, but I think it's only this that matters: that it is not - and will not be - crystal clear.
- Also, not sure if anyone has brought this up yet, but I would believe the deliberate choice of using that term within TCGP suggests that, basically, "Mass Outbreak event" is a cross-canon thing now. (I don't believe it's a term they invented independently.)
- Together, these two points indicate to me that "Mass Outbreak event" should lead to a page where both/all of it is covered. That leaves A) a dedicated article covering all media (if it had merits); or B) a disambiguation. (Personally, I'm leaning towards a disambiguation for now.) - Making "Mass Outbreak event" a disambiguation page seems like a reasonable compromise. I'll support giving this page a dabtag and making the base title a disambig. Storm Aurora (talk) 02:51, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
- Disambiguation pages have the negative effect of getting 0 people to their intended destination on the first click. It's almost always better to pick one to be the main destination and hatnote the other on the top of the page. That way, at least 50% of people are getting to their destination on the first search, and the remaining group is unchanged either way (still having to click through once).
- That being said, if there is enough content to write a base overpage, that would be the compromise, but a dismbiguation page wouldn't cut it here. If we wanted to be clinical in our decision, we can look into how many views each page has in a given amount of time, but it's also fine to lean into recency. - Alternatively, whatever overview content we write about Mass Outbreak events could (and probably should) be a subsection on Mass outbreak, with this individual pages being List of Mass Outbreak events in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet and List of Mass Outbreak events in Pokémon TCG Pocket (or something of that ilk) if there ends up being enough content to break off of the main page.
