Surprise Trade (Japanese: マジカル交換 Magical Exchange) is a feature of Pokémon Sword and Shield and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet that allows players to trade Pokémon over local wireless (in Sword and Shield only) or via the Internet (requires a Nintendo Switch Online subscription). It is the successor to Wonder Trade from the Generation VI and VII games.

Mechanics

In Pokémon Sword and Shield, the Surprise Trade feature is accessed via the Y-Comm, and in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, it is accessed through the Poké Portal.

Like regular trading, Surprise Trading can trigger trade Evolutions.

Unlike with Wonder Trades, Pokémon with special Ribbons (such as the Classic and Premier Ribbons) can be traded using this feature. Mythical Pokémon, however, are still unable to be traded. In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Special Pokémon are also unable to be traded.

In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, if the player attempts to Surprise Trade a Pokémon that the game identifies as illegitimate, they will instead receive the error message "There's something wrong with the Pokémon you chose."
