→‎Intro: The rulebook completely fails us by using a circular definition. Going with "property" because the rules say these aren't "effects". Some extra paragraphs to handle things like order and "not an effect", Changed how attacks are being mentioned in the first paragraph.
(→‎Intro: Links scattered, and one case of changing "generally" to "can" (The exception is Imprision & Shock Wave, but I don't think those are Special Conditions and I'll make a talk page in a bit.) Added Pokemon Powers to the list of things blocked, and Abilties as a similar but not blocked thing.)

A Special Condition (Japanese: 特殊状態 Special Condition) is a result that some attacks have in the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Specific attacks may cause the Defending Pokémon to be affected by a Special Condition, such as the common Lick attack, which has a chance of causing Paralysis. They are the equivalent of the status conditions in the games. There are five Special Conditions currently in the Trading Card Game: Asleep, Burned, Confused, Paralyzed and Poisoned. Unlike status conditions in the video games, Special Conditions are not necessarily mutually exclusive, due to the Poisoned and Burned Special Conditions being recognized by the placing of a marker (known as status counters) on the afflicted Pokémon. However, between the other three, a Pokémon can only be affected by one at once.
A Special Condition (Japanese: 特殊状態 Special Condition) is a property that can be given to Pokémon in the Pokémon Trading Card Game. The Special Conditions are Poisoned, Burned, Asleep, Paralyzed, and Confused. Any effect is able to inflict a Special Condition. Most of the time a Special Condition is put onto the Defending Pokémon by the effect of an attack.  For example, the reccuring attack Lick has the player using the attack flip a Coin. If the result is heads, then the Defending Pokémon becomes Paralyzed. A Special Condition hinders the Pokémon that has it in some way. They are the equivalent of the status conditions from the core series games.

Special Conditions can only affect the Active Pokémon. If the Pokémon retreats to the Bench, any Special Conditions affecting them will be removed. They can also be removed by evolving a Pokémon or using a specific attack or Trainer card (such as EX Sandstorm). Special Conditions also stop many Pokémon Powers and the majority of Poké-Powers from working, but Poké-Bodies are unaffected by them. Ability replace the function of Pokémon Powers from Black & White onward, and are never blocked by Special Conditions.
The Special Conditions Asleep, Paralyzed, and Confused are all indicated by turning the Pokémon in a specific direction. The Special Conditions Poisoned and Burned are indicated by placing a marker for that Special Condition on the Pokémon. This has another effect: Asleep, Paralyzed, and Confused are mutually exclusive. If a Pokémon is under the effect of one of these three conditions, being afflicted different one of the three will replace the original Special Condition. Poisoned and Burned can affect a Pokémon which is already under the effect of any other Special Condition, since the markers do not conflict with other indicators. If a Pokémon is given the same Special Condition as one it already has, the newer one replaces the older one. This is distinct from the video games, where Pokémon cannot be afflicted with the same status condition and all of them are mutually exclusive with each other.

Every Special Condition, except for Confused, has at least one effect that occurs during Pokémon Checkup, If there are multiple Special Conditions that need to be resolved during this step, then they are resolved in the order of Poisoned, Burned, Asleep, and Paralyzed. If both player's Active Pokémon have Special Conditions, the order each player performs the effects on their Pokémon is not important. (While Posioned and Burned cause damage counters to be placed on Pokémon, the game only checks for Knocked Out Pokémon at the end of Pokémon Checkup.)

Special Conditions can only affect an Active Pokémon. Benched Pokémon ignore any effect that attempts to inflict them with a Special Condition, though most effects are written to not attempt to. If a Pokémon moves to the Bench, evolves, or devolves, they recover from all Special Conditions affecting them. There are also effects, such as that of the card EX Sandstorm, that cause Pokémon to recover from Special Conditions.

Effects exist that can prevent Pokémon from gaining Special Conditions, additionally causing said Pokémon to immediately recover from all Special Conditions. Variations on these may only affect a single Special Condition. Gaining a Special Condition is an effect, so any effect that prevents effects serves to prevent Pokémon from gaining Special Conditions. However, Special Conditions themselves are not effects. Removing all existing effects has no affect on Special Conditions. Some effects may activate if a Pokémon has a Special Condition.

Many Pokémon Powers and the majority of Poké-Powers stop working if the Pokémon with them has a Special Condition. Poké-Bodies, however, are unaffected by Special Conditions. Ability, which replace the function of Pokémon Powers from Black & White onward, are never blocked by Special Conditions.
