Contents

Introduction

This section contains an introduction to using the guide and a brief overview of the new mechanics introduced in Pokémon Gold and Silver, in addition to a review of established mechanics introduced in the previous generation. There is a separate contents section for Prof. Elm's Memo's, which are helpful gameplay tips and useful information which occur throughout the guide.

Pokémon Index by ID number

The "Pokémon Index by ID number" table details the Pokédex page number in the guide for specific Pokémon and the location page number showing where the Pokémon can be caught. These are sorted by both National Pokédex number and alphabetically by Pokémon.

Be a Pokémaster

This section outlines the newly introduced Day/Night cycle, the expanded New Pokédex, Pokémon Eggs, friendship Evolution, and the Time Capsule for link trading with the previous generation. A "Pokémon Combat Chart" details the type effectiveness of attacks, including the new Dark and Steel types.

Pokédex

Elm's Archives

The Pokédex section begins by showing the reader how to interpret the Pokédex pages. For each Pokémon, there is a detailed breakdown of: name, Old Pokédex number, Evolution information (for evolved Pokémon), height, weight, and type. There is an "Ability" chart showing the Pokémon's relative stats compared to other Pokémon, rated from 1-3 for each stat. Further down the page, the level-up and TM/HM moves a Pokémon can learn are listed, though these are described as "Abilities" in the guide. Moves written in black and green denote physical and special moves, respectively. Moves highlighted with a red dot are recommended for use with that Pokémon.

World Map

An in-game map of Johto and Kanto is shown on pages 92 and 93 respectively, with labels for cities and towns, routes, and other important locations.

Pokémon Locator

The Pokémon Locator section is split into two, a section for "By Area" and a section for "By Name". The first section, "By Area", gives a list of Pokémon that can be found in each location, starting at the beginning of the player's journey in New Bark Town and following the approximate route a player would take. The second section, "By Name", lists each Pokémon alphabetically, and gives each location the Pokémon can be caught.

By Area

Lists the Pokémon which can be caught in each location, separated by the game version, Pokémon Gold or Pokémon Silver, the times of day it can be caught, and the approximate rarity of the Pokémon that can be found at that time. The method for finding wild Pokémon is color coded as green for grass or cave areas, and blue for surfing or fishing. Pokémon that are not caught in battle are highlighted in pink, and details of the event are given, such as being in-game trades or gift Pokémon.

By Name

Lists all the locations where each Pokémon can be caught, separated by the game version, Pokémon Gold or Pokémon Silver, the times of day it can be caught, and the approximate rarity of the Pokémon that can be found at that time. Instead of being color coded, more specific methods for catching are detailed with icons, such as those found using Rock Smash, Headbutt trees, or hatching from an Egg. The level range for each Pokémon is also included.

Item

Lists of items are given, separated into lists for "Key Items", "Helpful Items", "Apricorns", "Ability Up", "Items to Sell", "Balls", "Mail", and "Decorative Items". Each item has a description of its use, the location it can be found, and its purchase price. The "Ability Up" list includes the newly introduced held items, along with battle items, vitamins, and Evolution stones.

Technical and Hidden Machines Lists

A list of TMs and HMs is given, where they can be obtained in the games, and their purchase price.

Abilities & Attacks

A list of all available moves, with the move's type, power, accuracy, and PP. The additional effect of the move is given, and also if it is available as a TM or HM.
