Sprite

Geonet (Japanese: ジオネット Geonet) is a high-tech globe that first appeared in the Generation IV and V core series Pokémon games for the Nintendo DS. In these games, it displays the locations of players that the player has communicated with over DS Wireless Communications or Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, it is located in the Global Trade Station; in Pokémon Platinum, HeartGold, and SoulSilver, it is located on the first floor of the Global Terminal; and in Pokémon Black, White, Black 2, and White 2, it is located on the second floor of every Pokémon Center, outside of the Global Terminal entrance.

In Pokémon Battle Revolution, the same list of locations as Geonet is used when selecting the player's location in the Profile. In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Geonet returns as a globe in the Global Wonder Station that marks points chosen by other players during Wonder Trades using Nintendo Switch Online.

Usage

In the Generation IV games, Geonet can be used as soon as the player gains access to the Global Trade Station^DP/Global Terminal^PtHGSS. In the Generation V games, Geonet can be used after the player obtains the C-Gear.

Initially, interacting with the globe will bring up a menu with three options: "See list", "Register", and "Exit"^DPPtHGSS/"Cancel"^BWB2W2. "See list" allows the player to view the world map. "Register" allows the player to select their own country and region. After registering a location, interacting with the globe will bring the player directly to the map. After saving the game, the registered location cannot be changed without starting a new game.

The map displays a globe that includes the registered locations of any players the player has communicated with. By using the Control Pad or dragging the globe on the Touch Screen to line up the green cursor over a registered location and pressing the X Button (or tapping the "View" button on the Touch Screen^HGSSBWB2W2), the name of the location will be shown on the upper screen. By pressing the A Button or tapping the Touch Screen, the globe will zoom in and out. Pressing the B Button or tapping the "Exit"^DPPtHGSS/"Quit"^BWB2W2 button on the Touch Screen will leave the map interface.

Points on the globe can be displayed in one of four colors. Locations change from blue to yellow at midnight according to the Nintendo DS system's real-time clock after closing and reopening the Geonet interface.

In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Geonet can be used after connecting to the internet at the Global Wonder Station. Every time the player performs a Wonder Trade, they are asked to pick a point on the globe to trade from. When matched with another player, the game will mark the point chosen by the other player on the player's globe. A single point can save up to five trades at a time.

Limitations

In Japanese-language Generation IV and V games, the player can only select a region within Japan. Until a player has communicated with a player whose registered location is outside of Japan, the map can only be be panned within a rectangular region around Japan, and cannot be zoomed out. This prevented Japanese games from unlocking points outside of Japan until after a compatible game was released internationally.

In Korean-language Generation IV and V games, the player is automatically registered to the location "Republic of Korea"^DPPtHGSS/"South Korea"^BWB2W2 upon starting a new game. As the Korean Generation IV games could only trade with other language games via the GTS, it is no longer possible to legitimately register any other points in those games following the discontinuation of Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

Mechanics

In the Generation IV and V games, the player's registered location is used for the following features:

• Upon trading (or battling^DPPtHGSS) with another player over DS Wireless Communications or Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, each player's registered location is recorded on each other's Geonet map.
• The player's registered location is displayed to other players who view a Pokémon deposited by the player in the GTS.
• The player's registered location is displayed in the Visitor Profiles in the Wi-Fi Plaza.^PtHGSS
• After registering a location in Geonet and making an international trade with another player, Unity Tower becomes accessible. The player will appear on the floor corresponding to their registered country.^BWB2W2
• The player's registered location is displayed on the back side of Battle Passes, which can be exchanged over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection or loaded from the Wii Remote.^PBR

Internally, the player's registered location is stored in the save file using two bytes, with one for the player's country and one for the player's region. The recorded location data is stored using 16 bytes for each country, with each region corresponding to two bits. A separate flag records whether or not a location outside of Japan has been recorded.

List of locations

In the Generation IV and V games, there are 233^DPPtHGSSPBR/232^BWB2W2 countries and 632^DPPtHGSSPBR/635^BWB2W2 locations in the game's internal data, but only 130 of these countries and 510^DPPtHGSS/529^PBR/514^BWB2W2 of these locations can be selected as a player's registered location. These mostly correspond to places where Nintendo had an official distributor as of Diamond and Pearl's release in Japan. Internally, each location is associated with (x, y) coordinates stored as signed 16-bit integers, which correspond to the point's latitude and longitude. Countries and dependencies have an additional value that stores whether it corresponds to a country, a dependency, or a country with selectable regions.

In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, there are 630 points. The numbering starts from Point 1 near the city of Sapporo in Hokkaido, Japan; continues through Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, South America, and Oceania; and ends with Point 630 in Antarctica. The table below labels them according to the closes point in the Nintendo DS games where applicable. Internally, each point is associated with (x, y, z) coordinates stored as 32-bit floating-point numbers, which correspond to its position in 3D space.

18 countries (Japan, China, India, Russia, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, Canada, the United States, Brazil, Argentina, and Australia) have multiple points corresponding to regions of that country. Locations that are not selectable are displayed in gray below. Unlike in the Nintendo DS games, "None" can be selected as a country or region in Pokémon Battle Revolution.

Trivia

The error

• On page 256 of Pokémon Platinum: Prima's Official Strategy Guide published by Pokémon USA, the included screenshot for the Geonet feature displays the player's registered location as "United States of America / New York" and the currently viewed location as "United States of America / Seattle", despite only the U.S. states and Washington, D.C. being selectable in-game. This is likely due to the fact that on page 337 of Pokémon Platinum Official Complete Clear Guide published by Media Factory, the equivalent Japanese screenshot displays the player's registered location as "Japan / Kagoshima" and the currently viewed location as "Japan / Tokyo", which are ambiguous between the prefectures and the cities of the same name.
