Their First Gym Battle (Japanese: VS ヤナップ・バオップ・ヒヤップ VS Pansage, Pansear, Panpour), titled VS Pansage / Pansear / Panpour in the Shogakukan Asia translation, is the 470th chapter of the Pokémon Adventures manga, and the 10th chapter of the Black & White arc.
It is subtitled Pansage・Pansear・Panpour (Japanese: 協力 Cooperation) in the VIZ Media translation and Cooperation in the Shogakukan Asia translation.
Plot
Black, Cheren, and Bianca begin their battle against the three Gym Leaders of Striaton City. In this battle, the victor is determined by whichever team has the most Pokémon still standing after thirty minutes. Additionally, no Pokémon is allowed to move to a different position, which puts Black's team at a disadvantage, as each of their Pokémon stands across from the elemental monkey with a type advantage over it.
Tep, Snivy, and Oshawott each take supereffective hits from their opponents, weakening them. When Cheren and Bianca become worried, Black encourages them to have their Pokémon attack with all of their might. Panpour, Pansage, and Pansear respond by using Work Up. They lash out at Black and his friends' Pokémon, blasting them backward. Snivy is hit especially hard, becoming unable to stand.
Stopping to observe the situation, Black recalls the time he fought Hiker Andy in a Triple Battle. He notes that everyone participating in the Gym battle is fighting their opponent in a line, when instead they could fight anyone as long as they are in range. As Cheren asks Black what his strategy is, Bianca commands Oshawott to charge at Pansage. Pansage retaliates by striking Oshawott's scalchop, to Black and Cheren's horror. This infuriates Oshawott, leading it to throw its water-soaked scalchop into Pansear. The supereffective attack knocks Pansear to the ground, rendering it unable to continue battling. Cheren and Black cheer on Bianca for tipping the scales, but soon after, another of Pansage's vines shoots out to destroy the scalchop and knock out Oshawott.
With Tep as the only challenger left standing, Pansage and Panpour close in on it. Tep attempts to blast fire at Pansage, but it easily dodges. As Tep continues chasing after Pansage, it is struck by a Water-type attack from Panpour that brings it to the ground. Thirty seconds remain on the clock, but all three of the challengers' Pokémon remain unable to get up.
Right as Chili declares his team's victory is imminent, Cilan notices that the three Pokémon on the ground appear to be eating Pansage's leaves. Shortly before the timer reaches zero, they all rise from the ground, giving the victory to Black and his friends. Cheren and Bianca are shocked, prompting Black to reveal he learned from his Pokédex that Pansage's leaves have healing abilities. He explains to the others that he was motivated to put his Pokédex to good use after breaking the other two. Cress, Cilan, and Chili then present Black and his friends with their own Trio Badges.
Later, Cheren and Bianca meet up with Black, who gives them each a Xtransceiver. Right as he clarifies that he truly does work for a talent agency, White arrives with Gigi. After sharing introductions with Cheren and Bianca, she leaves with Black. Shortly afterward, Bianca and Cheren realize they do not have Black's Xtransceiver number, leading them to chase after him once again.
