- This article is about the variant of Pokémon introduced in the EX series. For the Pokémon introduced during the Black & White Series, see Pokémon-EX (TCG).
Pokémon-ex, also known as Pokémon ex, are a type of Pokémon found in the Pokémon Trading Card Game. They first appeared in the EX Ruby & Sapphire expansion. Certain attacks, Abilities, Trainer cards, and Special Energy cards interact specifically with Pokémon-ex cards.
The "ex" in the name stands for extra, as indicated by a wide range of attacks that have some sort of additional effect on Pokémon-ex. For example, in the EX Deoxys expansion, there is a Grumpig which possesses an attack called "Extra Ball", which deals additional damage if used against a Pokémon-ex.
Pokémon-ex possess considerably higher HP and stronger attacks compared to their regular counterparts. However, when a Pokémon-ex is Knocked Out, the opponent takes two Prize cards instead of one. During the EX series, some Pokémon-ex have up to two Weaknesses or Resistances and a retreat cost of up to five.
Being a Pokémon-ex affects a Pokémon's name: for example, Blissey cannot evolve from Chansey ex. However, in EX Unseen Forces, Blissey ex had text allowing it to evolve from either Chansey or Chansey ex. This also occurred with Scizor ex. However, Rocket's Scizor ex is only capable of evolving from Rocket's Scyther ex, not Rocket's Scyther.
During the Scarlet & Violet series, the artwork on Pokémon ex cards mirrors the style introduced on Pokémon LV.X: having the Pokémon break the borders of the illustration. They also include special characteristics influenced by the card type and the Pokémon depicted, and colorful sparkles around the Pokémon.
