VS Shuckle (Japanese: VS ツボツボ VS Tsubotsubo) is the 310th round of the Pokémon Adventures manga, and the eighth round of the Emerald arc.

Synopsis

The round picks up where the previous round ended, with a mysterious figure in an armor attacking Noland at the Battle Factory. The attacker looks through Noland's computer for a Pokémon he is seeking - the Pokémon that rises for seven days only after a thousand years of sleep - the Wish Pokémon, Jirachi.

Meanwhile at the Battle Pike, Todd watches as Emerald's Blissey successfully uses Seismic Toss on Lucy's Seviper. However, Seviper then uses Poison Fang, badly poisoning Blissey. Unfortunately for Emerald, he already used his last Pecha Berry in the previous room. Emerald decides to keep attacking, but Lucy switches to her Shuckle, knowing it has a very strong defense.

Emerald switches Pokémon too, choosing his Starmie. Starmie tries a Water-type move, but Shuckle blocks it with Protect, and poisons Starmie with Toxic. Emerald then orders Starmie to Surf, finally beating Shuckle. Lucy congratulates Emerald, but reminds him that his Pokémon is still poisoned, and his lack of any Pecha or Lum berries is surely an indication of his current bad luck.

Emerald knows that his Blissey is already cured thanks to its Ability, and that Starmie can do the same if he retreats it back to its Poké Ball - but he also knows that the only Pokémon he has at full health is Rapidash, which will be at a huge disadvantage against Lucy's Milotic. He decides to keep using Starmie, and Lucy sends out Milotic. Milotic deflects Starmie's Psychic with Mirror Coat, weakening it, but just when Lucy thinks she won the battle and orders Milotic to use one more attack, Emerald surprises her with Thunderbolt, and both Pokémon faint.

Lucy is now down to Seviper, and Emerald takes out his Rapidash, just as the other Frontier Brains arrive to watch. After poisoning the Fire Horse Pokémon, Seviper uses Giga Drain, winning the round. Emerald then brings out Blissey, ordering it to use Seismic Toss against Seviper's Crunch. Seviper is stronger and eventually Blissey collapses, to the cheers of the Frontier Brains. Lucy stops them, though, saying something's not right. A moment later, she realizes what it is - Seviper is on fire due to Rapidash's Overheat, and then faints, leaving Emerald the victor! Confused, Lucy eventually realizes that Blissey used Heal Bell and Softboiled to cure Rapidash while attacking Seviper. She congratulates Emerald on how "lucky" he was keeping this strategy from her for 140 rooms, and gives him the Luck Symbol. Emerald replies that he doesn't need it and tosses the Symbol away, but Todd grabs it and puts it in Emerald's pass, next to the Knowledge Symbol.

Emerald then turns to Brandon and tells him he'll be taking on the Battle Pyramid next. Lucy tells him he can exit the Battle Pike from the back, but Emerald says he prefers walking the way he came in, and runs at that direction. Todd, suspecting there's something more to it, follows Emerald. Emerald simply explains that he wanted to talk to one of the maids. Todd first thinks Emerald is trying to hit on her, but he soon realizes that the maid is really Latias in disguise. Latias asks Emerald if there were any Pokémon that seemed suspicious, like the Sceptile from the Battle Factory, and Emerald says there were - in rooms 18, 56, and 134. They decide to go back and tame them all immediately.
