Reason: Gallery of the menus throughout generations and games

The menu (Japanese: メニュー menu) is the main interface in all of the core series Pokémon games that allows the player to access the game's basic features and aspects of their save file. The menu's entries differ throughout the various games.

In Generation I, the menu is darker than usual if opened in a cave or other dark location in which Flash has not yet been used.

Access

Generations I-III

The menu is accessed from the START button of the Game Boy-line handheld.

Generation IV onwards

The X button of the Nintendo DS-family or Nintendo 3DS-family handheld is used instead.

In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the menu is always open on the touchscreen.

Generation V introduced a new feature to the menu: a shortcut list that can be accessed from the Y button. It is managed by (un)ticking the checkbox at the bottom of the party screen, Pokédex, Bag, Trainer Card, or Options.

List of entries

Pokémon

Main article: Party

This entry loads the player's party.

It is called Pokémon (Japanese: ポケモン Pokémon) in the menu. The shortcut list of the Generation V games instead calls it the Pokémon List (Japanese: ポケモンリスト Pokémon list).

Pokédex

Main article: Pokédex

This entry loads the player's Pokédex.

Bag

Main article: Bag

This entry loads the player's Bag.

Its name is Bag (Japanese: バッグ bag) since Generation III but it was also called ItemRBY (Japanese: どうぐRGBY tool) and PackGSC (Japanese: リュックGSC pack) in older games.

Devices and features

This entry is reserved for the different game-exclusive devices and features that assist the player in his or her journey.

In Generations II and III, these are part of the menu itself. Starting in Generation IV, they are featured on the touchscreen of the Nintendo DS-family or Nintendo 3DS-family handheld.

Trainer Card

Main article: Trainer Card (game)

This entry displays the player's Trainer Card and its title is always replaced by his or her name.

Save

Main article: Saving

This entry loads the command used to create or overwrite the save file.

Options

Main article: Options

This entry opens a menu for managing settings that the player can modify to change some behaviors of the game. The available settings differ throughout the various games.

Exit

This was the final entry in the menu up to Pokémon Platinum and is also present in the menu of Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver and later games, it was replaced by a graphical X button that can be tapped on to close the menu.

As all games allow the menu to be closed by pressing the START, X, or B buttons, this function is somewhat redundant.
