Impostor Professor Oak in the anime

James disguised himself as Professor Oak in Will the Real Oak Please Stand Up?, along with Jessie disguising herself as DJ Mary. He was successful in imitating Professor Oak for a time, due to help from Meowth as well as sheer luck. However, after many tests, including silhouette identification and writing poems, he was discovered.

James used the same disguise again in A Faux Oak Finish!, where he took Professor Oak's place in a convention in order to help the Team Rocket trio steal Pokémon from the people attending the convention. However, the real Professor Oak soon showed up and was eventually proven to be the genuine article when he was able to determine the cause behind an audience member's Tyranitar's odd behavior and fix it by removing a thorn stuck under its foot.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

Impostor Professor Oak made an appearance in Kalling Kadabra as a disguise used by Sabrina's Kadabra. It was used to trick Red into thinking that Kadabra was the real Professor Oak, who had been kidnapped by Team Rocket. After witnessing the fake professor using Psychic abilities, Red saw through the ruse and exposed its true identity by draining its energy with Saur's Leech Seed.
