Release information
Original Series and Legendary Collection Series
This card was included in the Base Set as a Trainer card with artwork by Keiji Kinebuchi, first released in the Japanese Expansion Pack. In Japan, it was reprinted with a reworded effect in the Nivi City Gym deck and was subsequently included in the Tamamushi City Gym deck, in both decks of the Quick Starter Gift Set, and the Yamabuki City Gym deck. Outside Japan, it was reprinted in Base Set 2 and the Legendary Collection retaining its original effect text. The Original Series print was also featured in the Pokémon Trading Card Game and Pokémon Trading Card Game 2: The Invasion of Team GR! for Game Boy Color.

In Japan, it was reprinted in the Beginning Set +, the Beginning Set Pikachu Version, and the Blastoise + Kyurem-EX Combo Deck. Outside Japan, it was reprinted in the Black & White Trainer Kit and the Plasma Blast expansion.

This card was reprinted with new artwork by 5ban Graphics as one of the Japanese XY-P Promotional cards and was available in the Xerneas & Yveltal Card Box from December 13, 2013. This print was later available outside Japan in the Primal Clash expansion. The Japanese Bandit Ring expansion included a Secret print of Energy Retrieval, which was later printed in the Ancient Origins expansion. The original XY-P Promotional print was made available in a number of subsequent Japanese products, including the Primal Groudon & Primal Kyogre Card Box, the Emboar-EX vs Togekiss-EX Deck Kit, and the Mega Mewtwo X & Mega Mewtwo Y Card Box. It was reprinted again in the Japanese BREAK Starter Pack. It was reprinted as a retro card in the Evolutions expansion, first released in the Japanese Expansion Pack 20th Anniversary subset, featuring the same artwork as the Base Set print and an updated card template reminiscent of the Original Series layout.

Trivia
- In Japan, before the Leaders' Stadium expansion, this card's Expansion Pack print could retrieve any Energy cards from the discard pile, not just basic Energy cards. This card thus received an erratum, which was included in the Nivi City Gym print, and in any international releases of this card. It shares this trait with Super Energy Retrieval.[1]
