Soul (Japanese: ソウル Soul) is a fan-made name used to refer to the female player character in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the counterpart to Gold in the same games. This name is only used by fans who view her as a new character. Fans who view her as an updated version of Kris refer to her by that name. She is a young girl who lives with her mother in New Bark Town.

Soul speaking with Gold

Soul can be seen talking with Gold in New Bark Town at the start of the game. In this particular scene, she is seen with a Marill. It is unknown if she will always have Marill or if the Pokémon will change if another starter Pokémon is selected.

As details about her are scarce at the current time, it is unknown whether or not she is Kris or truly a new character. In a video from Pokémon Festa, a tag battle featuring two male players vs. two female players was shown: in it, the male players were named as ヒロキ Hiroki and ソウル Soul, while the females were named as ミキ Miki and ハート Heart. The first male player's name is the same as one of Gold's default names in the original Pokémon Gold, much like how Red retains サトシ Satoshi from the original Pokémon Red in Pokémon FireRed, however, the first female player's name is not found in the default name list for Crystal of Kris (this could be explained as being a similarity to Gold also not having any of his Crystal names in Gold or Silver). The names of ハート Heart and ソウル Soul being used for the other female and male player, respectively, can also be noted as default names, much as Red and Leaf both had ファイア Fire and リーフ Leaf among their default names in FireRed and LeafGreen, respectively. Another name, コトネ Kotone, has been put forward by a manga, however, it may be in the same vein as Hareta or Mitsumi, and not have any relation to the name of this character at all.

Leaf's own existence also points toward evidence that may lead to a confirmation of Soul's identity. While Pokémon Red and Green were being developed, a female player character was initially planned, but later dropped, presumably due to lack of memory. This girl has a similar design to Blue from Pokémon Special, and when FireRed and LeafGreen were released, Special's Blue changed her clothes to those of Leaf. Presumably, if Kris and Soul are one in the same, Special would address this by changing Crystal's clothes to match. As Crystal initially had brown hair, changed during the course of Generation II to match both Kris and Marina, her counterparts, this may indicate something.

Soul in the anime.

With an upcoming appearance of Soul in the anime, this problem may soon have an answer, depending on what the anime's name for her is. Like Dawn and May, whose names are shared with their game counterparts in all languages, Soul is likely to have whatever in-game name she has in the anime, provided that her anime counterpart is not just Marina in different clothes (as several other characters have been shown to change clothes over the course of the anime). Marina's relatively recent appearances in the anime show that her existence has not been forgotten, despite The Legend of Thunder! now being nearly ten years old, and so this article will remain until the verification of Soul's identity.
