An island challenge (Japanese: 島めぐり island-visiting) is a rite of passage for burgeoning Pokémon Trainers unique to the Alola region. This rite involves visiting each of the four major islands of Alola and facing various trials. The goal of those taking the island challenge is to become the strongest Trainer, the island challenge champion.

The trials that make up the island challenge are not limited to Pokémon battles. A trial may involve finding designated items, a test of knowledge, or many other possibilities, but all are difficult tasks that require Trainers to prove themselves. At the end of each trial, Trainers must face a Totem Pokémon, a Pokémon who is larger and more powerful than others of its species, in an SOS battle where it will call on allies to join it in battle. The final trial at each island is called the grand trial. In the grand trial, the Trainer must face the island kahuna, and if they win, they are allowed to move on to the next island in their island challenge.

Each trial has a trial captain who provides guidance to Trainers undertaking a trial.
