Ash's Mijumaru (Japanese: サトシのミジュマル Satoshi's Mijumaru) is the second Pokémon that Ash caught in the Isshu region.

History

Ash first met Mijumaru in Professor Araragi's laboratory in BW001 as one of the starter Pokémon Shooti could choose. He took an interest in Ash after Ash called him cute, following him after he set out on his journey, staying out of sight most of the time.

In BW002, Mijumaru rescued Ash's Pikachu and Iris's Kibago from Team Rocket by throwing the shell on his belly and popping their balloon as they attempted to escape. He managed to defeat Jessie's Koromori as well.

In BW003, Mijumaru showed his interest in traveling with Ash and convinced Ash to take him with him on his journey. In doing so, he jealously knocked Pikachu off Ash's shoulder. When Ash tried to catch him with a Poké Ball, he failed as his Poké Ball was actually with Professor Araragi. Ash immediately called Professor Araragi to which she sent him Mijumaru's Poké Ball. Later on, Mijumaru protects Ash from a hot water spring using Water Gun, but begins to fall into the hot water. Ash then uses his Poké Ball to recall him.

In BW004, Mijumaru comes out from his Poké Ball at the start of a battle, clearly indicating his will to battle even though Ash had already chosen Pikachu. However, he promptly changed his mind when he realized that opponent was Futachimaru, a Pokémon of its own evolved form.

In BW005, during the decisive match for his first badge in Sanyou Gym, Ash uses Mijumaru in a battle against Dent and his Yanappu. At first, Mijumaru was afraid of Yanappu, but with some encouragement from Ash and Pikachu, he decided to battle. Throughout the match, Mijumaru was unable to hit Yanappu with his Water Gun, and starts flailing around when he is being hit by Bullet Seed. He then becomes petrified with fear when Yanappu started charging a SolarBeam. Continuing in BW006, he deflects the SolarBeam with his keratin shell, and subsequently Bullet Seed. At one point he drops his shell and was prevented from picking it up as Yanappu continued firing Bullet Seed between himself and its shell. Ash asks him to aim his Water Gun at a wall, and trusting his trainer, he does so and recovers his shell. He then used Shell Blade to defeat Yanappu, winning the battle and earning Ash the Tri Badge.

In BW007, Mijumaru was sent out in a battle against a wild Tsutarja. As it was a male, he became infatuated when hit by Tsutarja's Attract, as was thus eventually recalled.

Trivia

  • Mijumaru's capture was first revealed in a short preview aired after DP190, featuring all the Isshu starters.
  • Similar to Aipom and Gible, he followed Ash behind his back and debuted few episodes earlier than his official capture.
  • Mijumaru is the first starter Pokémon that Ash has captured first in his region that isn't the region's Template:Type2 starter.
    • He is also the first starter Pokémon, other than Pikachu, Ash has obtained that was previously owned by the regional professor.
  • Like Ash's first Water-type starter Pokémon, Squirtle, Mijumaru wanted to be captured and was not battled.
  • Mijumaru seems to share a common trait with both Bayleef and Aipom, as all wanted Ash's full attention, and were jealous of the bond Pikachu has with Ash.
    • Unlike the others, Mijumaru is male, as revealed in BW007.
